  • How You Can Have an Out-Of-This-World Career as an Astronomer

There are marvels in our universe extending far past than what we can see on earth, and there’s a dedicated team of people working to crack its secrets. On this team is a very important member of the science community called the astronomer – a person who studies the cosmos and the science behind stars and the universe. An astronomer needs a strong background in math and physics to be able to calculate the characteristics and movements behind different bodies moving in space including planets, moons, satellites, stars, and other unknown entities.

Astronomy is largely a standard full-time job with a significant amount of the work happening at night when more of the celestial bodies are more visible. You can expect to work in a team environment on a project that analyzes data, strings together hypotheses, and uses data collected early in the experiment to propose other research topics. To acquire this job, you must attend 5 to 7 years of schooling and earn a Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics, as well as having some experience in a post-doctoral research program, which can typically last from 2 to 3 years. Students who succeed in graduating from this strenuous schooling will find a highly rewarding career that will provide stability for the rest of the student’s life.

What are the perks of the job?

If you have a passion for math and science, the perks write themselves out. Other benefits that come with this job is its particularly high median annual salary: a whopping $104,100 as reported in 2015 by according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. When you enter into the astronomy profession, you enter into a job that is always interesting, always fulfilling, and also allows you to do some traveling as you present your findings to international conferences.

What are some of the setbacks?

Some of the setbacks to this career can include the difficult it is to get into. Research institutes want the best astronomers on their team and with a projected growth rate of 3% between 2014-2044, it can be a highly competitive field. As well, it requires many years of very expensive schooling, in-state costs in the U.S. can range from $16,575 to $68,230 while out-of-state can range from $27,735 to $68,230.

How can I grow with this career?

Being an astronomer is a highly celebrated profession and allows you to gain international recognition. You could also win a Nobel Prize for your findings if you excel in your work! There are also other fields you would have the skills for within the scientific community or inspire the next generation of scientific minds with a career in teaching the subject at colleges or universities. Many astronomers also write non-fiction books to present their findings or engage with the literary community as another way to self-promote and earn extra passive income.

That’s all great, but could I be hired for other careers?

Being an astronomer will open up other doors in the scientific community that require a similar set of skills: analysis, mathematics, sciences, etc. As well, you will be qualified for a teaching job in this field after a few extra years in teacher’s college should you choose to work for colleges and universities.

  • Career Profile: Aerospace Engineer

    Career Profile: Aerospace Engineer

The aerospace engineer is an engineer that specializes in aircraft and other air-based mechanic parts. This includes developing propulsion or control systems for different forms of aircraft like fighter jets and commercial airliners, running maintenance and repairs on existing engines, and designing and developing missiles and other airborne weapons. These engineers have a strong knowledge of aerodynamics, mechanics, robotics, thermodynamics, military and commercial aircrafts and systems, etc. To prepare to embark on this career, students will have to earn a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering up to a master’s degree in the same field.

What are the perks of the job?

For students who enjoy taking apart machines, finding out how they work, and putting them back together, this career already has its fair share of perks. Other perks include a hefty annual median income of $110,570 as of 2015, according to the U.S. Bureau or Labor Statistics (BLS). However, it is important to consider that novice engineers or technicians who pursue a lower standard job in the same career will earn significantly less. Another benefit, especially for those who are passionate about the field of aircraft and aerodynamics, is that as an engineer creating designs that will be used in real life, you can ensure that you work will be making a difference in the world. Finally, if you know math and science like the back of your hand, the career has been expected to soar in the next few years, raising 6% between 2016 and 2026 since new aircraft development is looking to create a less pollution-creating model, according to the BLS.

What are some of the setbacks?

A few of the setbacks include the fact that it is a special-interest kind of career, which means that if you do not have an aptitude for math and science, this job will not come naturally to you. Some other setbacks could be having to relocate around the country to an airfield, major airport or military base that focuses on aircraft development. In testing jet engines and aircraft, the engineer could potentially be put in harms’ way or be exposed to dangerous chemicals on the job. While such instances tend to be rare, there is an element of a risk factor there.

How can I grow with this career?

Many engineers get into positions as flight or aircraft technicians who perform regular maintenance and repairs on aircraft models. Engineers can grow in this profession by excelling and becoming aerospace designers who create blueprints to military craft and commercial designs and are expected to earn more as an annual salary.

That’s all great, but could I be hired for other careers?

If trained in other forms of engineering, it’s likely that an aerospace engineer could cross platforms and pursue other forms of engineering (for example, nautical engineering). However, it’s not as simple as flipping a switch, you only have a leg up because of the similar set of fundamental skills required for both jobs. If you were an aerospace engineer looking to change specializations or careers, you would still need an extra amount of schooling and on-the-job training to be able to pursue the vocation of your choice.

  • A Closer Look at a Career as a Phone Operator

A Closer Look at a Career as a Phone Operator

When you call a company or organization, have you ever wondered how your calls are directed to the right employee or the right department? That is the job of the phone operator, and while their daily tasks vary, the main responsibility is that the caller’s issue is addressed or directed to the concerned party.

If you are looking into a career as a phone operator, here are details that can help give you a head start:

Phone Operators – What You Need to Know

Phone operators’ tasks and responsibilities differ according to the nature of the business of who they are working for. For example, phone operators in hotels are responsible for assisting guests and potential guests for all hotel-related inquiries such as booking, billing, reservations, and special requests.

Phone operators who work for emergency hotlines such as 911 are responsible for logging in the caller’s issue and contact information and ensuring that their needs are attended to by emergency responders.

Phone operators for corporations or businesses that provide products or services also function as front-desk receptionists and they are tasked to answer questions from customers or potential customers and keep track of their issues, requests, or complaints.

Regardless of the company, phone operators are bound by confidentiality agreements and are therefore obligated to treat each call received as secure and confidential.

    Salary

According to PayScale.com, phone operators can earn as much as $23,582 – $44,602a year.

    Skills

To be a phone operator, the minimum requirement is Grade 12 or equivalent educator. They have to have excellent communication and coordination skills. They also have to be well-organized and time-conscious and possess excellent judgment and assessment skills.

Required skills for emergency responders tend to be more rigorous than front-desk operators. In some cases, emergency dispatchers are often required to have a clean record and should be prepared to undergo medical testing, vision-field testing, and auditory standard testing. In particular, call taker for paramedic services must themselves have certification in CPR and Standard First Aid training. 911 Operators must pass an RMCP Entrance Exam.

    Pros and Cons

An advantage of being a phone operator is that you are the first point of contact of clients and customers. This means, you always have to be able to think on your toes and make a good impression. For some, this can be challenging but for most people, this is a welcome challenge of which they are happy to oblige.

Phone operators who deal with emergencies, on the other hand, can involve high levels of stress, and because of the nature of their job, they should be prepared to work night shifts and weekends and even on holidays. It can be extremely taxing both physically and mentally. However, you have to keep in mind you are doing good work in the name of public security and safety.

  • A Closer Look at a Career as a Payroll Clerk

A Closer Look at a Career as a Payroll Clerk

A payroll clerk may not be a job that affords the highest salary in any company or organization, whether private or government, but it is one of the most important roles. Without payroll clerks, the time and effort employees put in to accomplish their daily duties would not be accounted for and they would not be able to receive their due financial compensation.

If you are looking into building a career as a payroll clerk, the following information can provide you with the insight you need:

Payroll Clerks – What You Need to Know

Payroll clerks, or timekeeping clerks as they are sometimes referred to, usually work within accounting or HR departments and they are mainly responsible for keeping accurate records of employee work hours, making sure that each employee are paid accurately AND timely for each pay day. In cases where there are no automated systems for noting employees’ time-in and time-out, payroll clerks bear the responsibility of ensuring time cards are filled out with 100% accuracy and duly signed off by their supervisors or managers appropriately. Later on, they are responsible for data entry — making sure all data are recorded digitally.

Along with employees’ work hours, payroll clerks also have to consider tax exemptions, overtime, vacation days, sick days, and any bonuses when computing for employees’ salaries.

    Salary

According to PayScale.com, a payroll clerk can earn as much as $31,028 – $53,641 a year. In some cases, they are also entitled to profit sharing.

    Skills

If you are looking at a career as a payroll clerk, you would need to complete at least high school diploma and equivalent. As the job requires having to deal with a lot of data involving figures and numbers, payroll clerks are expected to have a keen sense of accounting and bookkeeping principles, as well as proficiency in using accounting software such as Excel, Quickbooks, Simply Accounting, and others. Payroll clerks are also required to be knowledgeable in labour practices such as appropriate overtime compensation and must be updated with tax regulations.

Just because they work with numbers most of the time, however, does not mean payroll clerks are isolated. In fact, they or the payroll supervisors might be communicating more with employees than the human resources people themselves. This is because everyone wants to be paid right, and if something is amiss, they will no doubt address it. Because of this, payroll clerks need to have outstanding communication skills and they should be able to convey information correctly and clearly.

    Pros and Cons

The advantage of being a payroll clerk is that it is an indispensable role in any company, no matter how large or small. Unlike other roles that can easily be deemed redundant, a payroll clerk is a must for any organization that intends to keep their employees and keep their business running. Once you are able to get your foot in the door as a payroll clerk and you do your job as accurately and timely as possible, your job is secure and that translates to job stability.

While there is a trend of automating some employees’ tasks, that is unlikely to take place with payroll clerks. Even though you work with automated systems all the time, payroll is such an important component in an organization that they always need a payroll clerk to verify all information and ensure everything is done accurately and timely.

A disadvantage is that payroll clerks also have the main responsibility of addressing any issues that employees has about their paychecks. This means they have to be readily available to an employee to answer inquiries such as missing overtime pay, lack of holiday pay, and the like. For others, this can be tedious especially those who work in large-scale companies where there are hundreds of employees.

  • A Career in Words: A Profile of Writers and Authors

A Career in Words: A Profile of Writers and Authors

Writers and authors have the challenge of putting words on pages and screens. They have to consider how many and which words to use, flow of sentences, and impact on readers. All of this must lead to a goal – website text must get customers to buy a product, while the story of a novel must resonate with audiences. It is a career path that can be very rewarding and extremely frustrating, and can be pursued in many different ways.

There were over 54,000 people working as authors or writers in Canada in 2014. They were writing things such as content for companies to sell products, creative stories for readers, and blogs for websites. Writers have to be very self-determined, as they often write on their own remotely. It can be lonely work. They have to make sure their words are to the liking of the editor or employer they are submitting to, and sometimes have to deal with very negative feedback. However, writers have a lot of freedom that is different from many full-time jobs. They can work from home, libraries, or coffee shops, and do not have a strict day-to-day schedule. Writers have the satisfaction of creating works that are shared online or in books, and are read by a great number of people.

A writer earns an average annual salary of around $40,500. At first, they can expect to start at around $26,700, but can work up to over $66,000. Those who focus on technical writing or proofreading can expect to make more than others. Although there are many people seeking jobs in the field, there are also many job openings. From 2015 to 2024, it is expected that there will be slightly more job opportunities than people seeking jobs in the writing industry. They may not get the exact job they wanted, but hopeful writers can definitely find something related to what they want.

Most people in the field end up in arts, entertainment and recreation. There are many college courses and programs that offer credentials to begin this journey. Most employers will be looking for an undergraduate degree in a writing-heavy subject, such as English or History. From there, hopefuls can take on internships or workshops to get their foot in the door. These opportunities help them meet the right people. Networking plays a big role in finding success.

Since authors and writers have a lot of freedom and often work a freelance lifestyle, it makes it very possible to change fields and pursue other work. Scriptwriters can work on articles at the same time. Technical writers can do blogs on the side. As long as one can manage their time and make enough to cover basic expenses, there are a lot of opportunities to change fields or advance in the industry. It is a good idea to have a consistent part-time job. This will make sure there is enough time to write, but also make sure there is income during periods when there are few writing opportunities.

Authors and writers can change lives with their words. Modern technology makes it possible to share these words in many different ways, providing job opportunities across the globe. Those looking to become writers need to be prepared to put in the effort to seek out those opportunities and deal with a great amount of uncertainty. The best thing to do is to start writing right this minute. Keep networking with new people, keep job searching, and no matter what, keep writing.
