  • The Beautiful Irony of Social Responsibility

The Beautiful Irony of Social Responsibility

A modern scientific understanding of the human mind gives us insight on our development as a species. We evolved through the selfish and brutish process of evolution, in which the adept flourish and those not suited for the environment are mercilessly left behind. The utmost goal of living organisms is to survive. Genuine altruism, the act of genuinely putting other lives ahead of your own, is an illusion.

Far from disheartening, this actually leads to a far more interesting conclusion. We evolved as communal creatures because communities are far more beneficial to our selfish survival than going at it solo. We help others because it makes us feel good. We improve our lives when we enrich the lives of others. Our selfishness is ironically altruistic.

This beautiful irony allows us to better our own lives if we embrace it in its entirety. Social responsibility is this awareness of the world around you. A world that grows, gains, and loses parts of itself day after day, regardless of your awareness of these phenomena. By choosing awareness, you will grow with the world, reap from those gains, and truly understand the impact of the losses.

This can take the form of donations to charities and causes that speak to you, whether they are large amounts or loose change. If your pockets are empty, take action. Volunteer, tutor students struggling with their classes, or become an activist for your favourite cause. Even picking up litter on the streets, a deceptively simple task that is far from trivial, can stir you to take further action and encourage those around you to follow suit. You are not fighting or defying your selfish genes, but rather utilizing them in the most selfless way.

Two common terms most associated with social responsibility are Individual Social Responsibility and Corporate Social Responsibility. The distinction is simple but the implications can be problematic. The latter looks at what a company or organization does for its community. This term can cause us grow despondent when thinking of the far-reaching capabilities of an organization versus our own individual impact. Yet it is Individual Social Responsibility that is the roots of Corporate Social Responsibility, and where the real change happens; whatever the terminology, the core principles remain the same.

You may have lingering doubts about your role in all of this. Many of us do. We are trapped in the perspective our minds create. We have a logical understanding that there is an entire universe out there, and a single planet with billions of minds, each with its own perspective. Yet our individual brain does not have the capacity to truly conceive this idea in its entirety. Stepping outside yourself and focusing on your social responsibility is one of the best ways to battle anxiety, depression, and the other negative mental states that trap us. By engaging in social responsibility, we are bridging the gap between the solitary perspective within us and the endless vibrancy of the surrounding world.

  • Living the Entrepreneurial Life

    Living the Entrepreneurial Life

Traditionally, we are hunters. In the modern world, we still hunt: for jobs, for apartments, for dates, and more. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors took a huge step in their evolution when they transitioned to farming. Entrepreneurs are also farmers. Instead of going out and mining existing resources for jobs, you are instead planting the seeds for those very resources.

Entrepreneurs are able to gather together resources to make their products or provide their service, find the money to make it happen, hire the people they need, and set up the office space to get the job done. They fearlessly don many hats and juggle the roles as needed. To become one yourself, you have to be prepared to do all of these things. You will be free from the 9-to-5 world, but be ready to work evenings, nights, and weekends with a schedule that could change weekly.

Entrepreneurs use their strengths to add value to the world around them. This can take a myriad of shapes and forms. As an employee, you must assess what is expected of you and utilize your strengths to make that happen. As an entrepreneur, you must assess your strengths and utilize them unexpectedly. You are not given work, but create your own work from the ground up. The freedom is frightening, but it also paves pathways allowing nearly any skill set to be utilized.

To start, spend time sorting out your service or product until you are comfortable, but not to the point of perfection. It will inevitably evolve as you have successes, failures, receiving feedback, and experience the ups and downs that come with the entrepreneurial world. Social media makes it much easier to grab someone’s attention, but harder to hold on. You will want to make immediate impacts. Keep your website design simple utilizing a few select images. Pull out your best camera, or rely on a photographer to get you the shot you need.

Corporate businesses live in a competitive world where the small can be devoured by the large. As an entrepreneur, you do not have to fret over your size. The elasticity of your business can mean uncertainty and struggles, but it also offers freedom. Do not dwell on whether your business is big or small, as the latter can be frightening and the former disheartening. You business simply is. Whether as a team or solo, as your primary income source or supplementary, as a part-time or full-time endeavour, your business is your baby.

You must be able to create structure from chaos, be prepared to take on the initiative on a daily basis, and brave the unpredictability that awaits you. Above all, you need a strong understanding of your own skill set and the ways it could be utilized in the world around you. Take time to jot down some notes about what you would want to do and how you would go about it. The moment your thoughts hit the paper, you are an entrepreneur.

  • Study Tips: How to Effectively Colour-Code Your Notes

Study Tips: How to Effectively Colour-Code Your Notes

Colour-coding is an essential studying technique for university and college students. For example, it’s a good idea to pick a different colour binder for each course. When it comes to notes, here are some tips I have personally found useful:

Write out your notes in black ink then colour-code using high-lighters

I used to write out study notes using black and coloured pens. However aesthetically pleasing the final result was, it just became too time-consuming. Switching between the different colours took up precious time: not just the physical action of capping and uncapping, but the mental effort to remember which colour corresponded to which sub-topic. When you regularly have lectures that are over 100 PowerPoint slides long, this is not the most effective use of your time.

A much more efficient technique is to write out study notes in black ink, and then use highlighters to colour-code. The added advantage is that you go through your notes twice: the first time writing it out, the second time high-lighting it.

    Stick to a few colours

My old technique of using coloured pens was also troublesome because I was using 10 colours. Huge mistake! When I should have been stuffing my brain with information on antibiotics, I was wasting brain space—futilely—trying to memorize my intricate colour-coding system.

Instead, you are better off with a few colours. Maximum four, but feel free to use more or less depending on your personal preferences and the needs of your courses. My current system involves two colours: pink (for information that the professor has indicated will be tested) and blue (for information that I need help with or need to spend more time on). I also highlight sparingly. The purpose of using colour is to guide your eye to what is most important. If your notes are full of colour, this is more distracting than helpful.

Be consistent across all your courses

When I was studying different microbial pathogens, I was tempted to assign different colours to habitat, mode of transmission, clinical significance, laboratory diagnosis, and treatment. That is five colours already—but these colours would only be applicable to my microbiology course, not my chemistry or statistics courses. This would mean at least two different colour-coding systems!

Your colour-coding system should be simple. Keep it simple so that it can be applied to all of your courses, regardless of the subject. Your life is complicated enough with coursework, extracurricular activities, and part-time jobs—don’t further complicate things with complex colour-coding systems.

Colour-coding can be an excellent technique to create effective notes. Whether you hand-write or print your study notes, strategic additions of colour to black text can help you increase your studying efficiency!

  • Benefits of Internships

    Benefits of Internships

For most young people trying to enter the work force the most common reason they give for not getting hired is “lack of experience.” Lots of students feel caught in the cycle of, “how can I gain experience if I can’t get a job.” One of the best ways to overcome this obstacle is to get an internship.

An internship is work experience designed to allow students to explore jobs relating to their university majors or to a specific career goal. There are a number of benefits to completing an internship. According to monster.com “employers overwhelmingly point to internship experience as the most important factor they consider in hiring new college graduates for full time positions.”

Aside from the possibility of being more employable to a perspective employer, here are some other benefits of internships:

    1. Completing an internship in high school may help you choose (or rule out) a university major. Maybe you wanted to be a Veterinarian your whole life, but after completing an internship in a vet’s office you discovered it really isn’t for you. The on the job training will help give you the opportunity to see what it’s really like in a certain field, and allow you to test out if the job is everything you expected it to be.
    2. Some internships may allow you to earn course credits. You might also be paid during your internship (though in some cases you will be expected to work for experience not for money).
    3. You can gain first hand job experience and knowledge that can’t be taught in the classroom. On the job training may make you more marketable to perspective employers. Internships also look really great on your resume.
    4. Internships can help you improve your confidence and self-esteem. Working in a professional environment and doing a good job will definitely help boost your confidence. It feels good to work hard and feel like you’ve contributed in some way.
    5. It will provide you with the opportunity to network. You can make contacts you can use in the future, which may lead to a future job opportunity or a valuable reference.
    6. You might work with someone who can become a mentor to you while your pursue career goals. Mentors can be helpful to ask questions to, get advice from and to learn from someone who works in a field that interests you.

Although education is extremely important, on the job, real world experience provides invaluable opportunities that can’t be duplicated in a classroom, which is why the benefits of an internship are well worth all the hard work you’ll have to put in.

  • Multi-tasking – Challenge or Triumph?

    Multi-tasking – Challenge or Triumph?

Do you know people who seem so productive that you ever wonder if they ever get to sleep at all? These people go to school on time and never miss a day, have a steady part-time job, are involved in volunteer projects every week, are active in sports activities, and have a full social calendar to boot. Do you ever wonder how they do it?

Well, having no gaps in one’s daily schedule means productivity levels are off the scale. Multitasking is indeed a skill that is to be admired, but sometimes there is such a thing as taking on too much. As such, below are tips for multitasking so you can avoid a crash and burn.

    Make a things-to-do list.

It may sound old-fashioned, but it is one trick that will never fail you. If you make a list of your things to do, it will give your mind more clarity and actually make you more prepared and ready to take on the tasks at hand. If you don’t want to write with a pen and paper, then go use your smartphone or tablet. You can even find apps that give alarm sounds when it’s actually time to do the task.

    Prioritize and sacrifice.

There are times when you want to do it all, but you will come to realize that Time won’t allow you to do it all. During these times, learn to prioritize and sacrifice. For instance, you are expected to turn in a school assignment by end of the week, and you have not done anything yet because you’ve put in extra hours of work in your part-time job. Unfortunately, your friends are inviting you to go at a pool party for the weekend. What to do? In this case, prioritize and sacrifice. You don’t want to end up with a big fat zero for your assignment, so explain to your friends that you will be taking a rain check for the time being.

    Focus.

There will come a time when one aspect of your life will need more attention than the others. For instance, if your mom will be having surgery on the weekend, and you’re the only family member who can be there for her while she recuperates, take the time to focus on giving her the care she needs. Focusing on this task means you are giving it 100 percent effort.

    Take your time.

Multitasking does not mean you have the right to do things halfheartedly. If you feel you need more time to complete the school assignment, take more time to do it rather than forcing yourself to speed things up so that you can move on to the next task at hand. Always remember the saying “jack of all trades but master of none.” You certainly don’t want to be a master of none.

Juggling multiple tasks at the same time may sound easy, but it does take a lot of skill and discipline. Always remember though that you are not a superhuman. Accept your strengths and weaknesses as they are and always do your best in every task that comes your way.

  • Too Much Social Media: Tips on How to Avoid Social Media During Exam Time

Too Much Social Media: Tips on How to Avoid Social Media During Exam Time

There are dozens of social media sites: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest and more. In a report issued by the Social Affairs Division of the Library of Parliament, over 80% of Canadian young adults use social media, and numbers from the US are no different, according to the Pew Research Centre.

You, may be in either the majority or the minority—but during exam weeks, make sure you are in the minority. I’m not suggesting you should delete your social media accounts, but avoiding them as much as possible during exam time may be in your best interest.

Social media is an unnecessary distraction. Even if you intend to just spend ten minutes on Facebook as a break from studying, don’t! That ten minutes will turn into an hour. It’s so easy to lose track of time when you’re scrolling through posts, liking someone’s baby pictures, responding to people who commented on your picture of your morning latte, etc.

Given the negative impact social media use may have on your studying productivity, here are some strategies to avoid it:

    1. Uninstall social media apps
Apps are so convenient. They remember your username and password so all it takes is one tap on a familiar icon and you’re logged on. Eliminate the temptation by uninstalling your frequently used social media apps. You can always reinstall them after exams.

    2. Use website blockers
Uninstalling apps does not eliminate your access to these sites on browsers. This is where website blockers come in. For example, StayFocused is a Chrome extension that allows you to block specific websites—or set a specific amount of time to access it. Once you have used up your daily time, you will not be able to access the site until the next day. There are similar programs that you can try out.

    3. Ask a friend or family member to change your password
An alternative strategy is to give a close friend or family member your password, ask them to change it, and tell them to give you the new password after your exams. Make sure this is someone you trust!

Final exams are coming up. Depending on the course, how well you do on these exams may determine whether you pass or fail the course. If you have difficulty focusing on your studying, eliminate as many distractions as you can. The above strategies will help you eliminate the frequent distraction of social media- your test scores will thank you for it!
