  • Energy Conservation; How it can affect our pockets, and our Planet.

Energy Conservation; How it can affect our pockets, and our Planet.

During winter, what happens? We stay inside because it is cold. What do we do while we are inside? We watch TV and ‘serf’ the internet. We don’t do much else, just relax and stay warm inside. While we crank up the heat and keep the Wi-Fi going; the bills get higher. Our consistent inside activities seem to really put a dent in our pockets.

So when summer comes barreling around, it’s time to leave the house and soak up all the vitamin D you can. That’s also the time to either crank up the air conditioner; veg-out on the couch with an ice-cream or watch Netflix for so long that the days and nights blur together. Seems like a good time, binge watching seasons of your favourite shows and re-watching your favourite movies. Not only will you get the luxury of watching Netflix’s finest, but you will also keep dishing money out for your bills, losing all your hard earned cash.

So instead of being a loner and keeping the lovely air conditioning on consistently, why not go swimming? Or camping, hiking, boating with your friends. Do something you have never done before, something you have always wanted to do. Go to a museum, art gallery, farmers market! Get out of the house and have fun in the sun! Now, saying that doesn’t mean you have to do something large. You can create change by shutting your lights off when leaving the house; instead of using a dryer you can hang your clothes outside; carpooling or even walking to your destination (if it is a reasonable distance).

Now, not only should we try to conserve energy on our own, but the Trades industries have also started trying to conserve energy. Since the economy has started falling due to our focus and dependence on oil, we have started trying to create jobs that help reverse the effects of environmental damage, leading to climate change. Since the oil industry causes such vast pollution problems, it is time we start switching our focus. As new technologies are created and processed, skilled trades are targeted to help create jobs and careers to create a sustainable resources; careers in manufacturing, construction and operation, as well as maintenance of projects in wind turbine farms and solar panel installation.

So, while you are enjoying the summer, remember that it is also a time to help the planet- We can all help the planet together.

  • Working in a Team and Managing Your Productivity

Working in a Team and Managing Your Productivity

Teamwork is a necessary skill. From group projects in elementary school to large-scale operations in the workforce, it is extremely likely that you are going to find yourself in team situations various times throughout your education and career.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy to work in a team. Sometimes it may seem easier to work on your own. If you have ever had uncooperative group members, you know exactly what that refers to. Instead of having to deal with people who start conflict or don’t pull their weight, it can actually be easier to take on all the work yourself. The problem is that in reality, this won’t always hold up; especially in a professional situation, you certainly don’t want to come across as uncooperative yourself.

The true benefit of teamwork is the fact that when it does work, the end product can turn out much better than it would have had you worked alone. It makes sense: a group consists of individual workers, each with their own talents, capabilities, and creative ideas to share. It is a relief to know that you don’t have to be responsible for absolutely everything, but instead can focus on what you do best. If your group members are compatible—or if they learn how to work around one another’s faults—you can help each other achieve excellent results.

It is not enough for individual team members to be strong, if the group itself leaves something to be desired. Effective teamwork is therefore a valuable skill that must be cultivated. It is important to learn how to cooperate in pursuit of a shared goal. If you learn to work together, you will pull through together, and you can consequently reap the rewards.

Here are three tips for making teamwork work for you:

Know your strengths—and those of others. Before you start working together, do a makeshift skills assessment to see what certain group members do best. You can keep this in mind when splitting up the work.

Communicate. Know where you’re at during every step of the process. This is even easier if you make use of technological tools—online document sharing services like Google Docs, as well as social media groups and messaging, can be lifesavers.

Be fair but firm. If someone isn’t pulling their weight, hear them out before you cut them out. There might be extenuating circumstances, and they might still wish to contribute in another capacity. However, don’t let anyone get away with coasting and taking credit for the hard work of the rest of the group.

  • Embracing Nature Around Your Campus

    Embracing Nature Around Your Campus

Being in school can be hard when the sun is shining and the weather is warm. It can also be hard to enjoy nature, but that can be a very important part of the learning process. Wherever you go to school, you can try to embrace the natural world around you and to appreciate the many benefits that people receive from it.

Many people enjoy being outside, hearing the birds and looking at the trees and flowers around them. Natural settings can be very calming. It can help people relax and relieve stress that they might otherwise be feeling. Outside in the fresh air, people can interact with each other in ways that are harder inside with artificial lighting and stale air. Out in nature, people can see themselves and each other in new ways.

Nature is not just about feeling good emotionally, however. It is also essential to people’s health. You probably hear a lot about the pollution in the air, which causes diseases and can seriously harm people. Trees help produce oxygen that people need to breathe, but they can also help reduce pollution by filtering out the chemicals in the air. On hot days, they help to keep the temperature down, and they provide shade from the sun. Other plants, including grass, are important, not only to make places look nice, but also to help keep the soil from washing away and otherwise keeping the environment clean and healthy.

Embracing nature on campus is also about what people can do to help keep the environment healthy. One way to do that is through cleaning up the garbage that collects on the ground. Some schools and universities have clean-up days once or twice a year when people pick up garbage, recycle what they can, and put the rest in bags to take away. That helps to make the area look nice but also removes sharp objects that can injure people and other garbage that can clog drains or cause other problems.

Your school campus might be small or very large, but you can help it to become an important natural area, whatever its size. Even after school is over for the year, you can start to make plans for how you will embrace nature wherever you go to school next. Many schools and universities have environmental policies, and it’s a good idea to learn as much as you can about that. If you see a problem, you can talk to others and see what you can do to help.

Suppose your school’s administration plans to cut down some trees to build an addition to the school. You could learn as much as you can about the plans and try to think of alternatives to avoid getting rid of any trees. Or suppose your science class wants to go on a nature walk; you could suggest looking at nature right where you are.

You might find more than you expect once you start to look.

  • Paying it Forward with Volunteering

    Paying it Forward with Volunteering

On special occasions such as birthdays or Christmas, many people like to give gifts to their family and friends. They might give objects like books or toys, or they might decide to give an experience like a trip to somewhere special.

Often, people give gifts to people who have given them something in the past, but sometimes they help someone else instead. People call this action “paying it forward,” and one of the most common ways that people pay it forward is through volunteering. Do you ever pay it forward in this way?

People have tried to help each other throughout history, but the term “pay it forward” is relatively new. It has become a popular idea since an author named Catherine Ryan Hyde used the term as the title of one of her books, in which she wrote about the concept of doing good things for others.

The idea of paying it forward is fairly simple: people should give gifts or help to others instead of returning the favour only to the people who have helped them. For example, suppose that someone helped you by finding your lost bicycle. The next day, you might decide to help a third person with a problem that you know how to solve. That’s what paying it forward is all about; helping strangers or other people whom you might not normally help.

Finding someone to help is not always very easy, but working for a volunteer project can be a good choice. Many Canadians are involved in volunteer work in different areas such as sports and recreation, social services, and education. They might coach a sports team, visit the elderly, or tutor at a school. Some people renovate houses for the poor or deliver baskets of food and gifts to people who can’t afford to buy what they need. Opportunities are available for almost any kind of volunteering.

Suppose that you got help from a tutor in one of your classes when you were struggling to learn what you needed to know. You could pay it forward by volunteering as a tutor at your school or in a community centre. Or suppose that one of your friends wants to play on a sports team but lacks the necessary skills. Maybe you needed help when you wanted to get onto the team, and someone took the time to assist you. Now, maybe you want to give someone else the kind of help that you got. You and your friend could practice together after school.

Volunteering and paying it forward is different for each person. Maybe you know how to teach writing or mathematics. Maybe you enjoy caring for animals or raking leaves. Whatever you can do to help people can be part of paying it forward. You might even start a new paying it forward movement and help to change the world, at least for a few people.

  • What Is Homeschooling?

    What Is Homeschooling?

Most of us are use to the norms of public and private school; the classroom with boring blackboards full of mathematical equations and Shakespearean sonnets. Homeschooling on the other hand, is quite different. In Canada over 20,000 students are homeschooled. While children are homeschooled, the parents are responsible for the child’s education. The parents teach their children based on their own beliefs and methods. They follow a grade based curriculum and progress on, based on their own decisions.[1]

So what are the benefits of homeschooling? There are many both socially and mentally. First parents can give individual attention to their child. This will allow the parent to see their child’s strengths and weaknesses, where on the contrary weaknesses go unnoticed in larger classrooms. Homeschooling will also allow the child to think independently and formulate their own ideas rather than follow the actions and ideas of others in larger groups.[2]

Homeschooling allows parents to asses their child’s abilities and tailor the activities associated with the curriculum to suit their needs; this will help the child with their confidence. With fewer distractions, children will be more focused opposed to a regular classroom. Home schooled children are more likely to develop better relationships with their parents.[3]

The procedural process for homeschooling is not complicated. Parents must write a letter of intent each to the school board of their jurisdiction. In Ontario, curriculum material isn’t funded by the government; parents must purchase the material themselves. However, regulations vary in different provinces where some governments will provide funding for material and allow parents to obtain tax credits related to home schooling.

So homeschooling is something definitely to consider for parents and students. Students who enjoy working by themselves may find a home schooled environment more beneficial than a traditional classroom.

  • Fun Activities for Summer!

    Fun Activities for Summer!

You’ve been waiting patiently all year for June… for school to finally be over.

Sure, for the first week or so it is was nice to relax; unwind; sleep in; lie around; enjoy not having anything you “had” to do. But after a few days, the novelty of doing “nothing” tends to wear off, and you get BORED!

Really bored. You start whinny to your parents, care givers, friends and relatives…

    “There’s nothing to do!”

    “I’m so bored!”

    “No one’s around!”

    “There’s nothing fun going on!”

Before these words slip out of your mouth this summer, stop and think of all the great things you can do, now that you have the time to do them.

Here is a list of fun ideas to get you started:

    • Set up a mini golf course in your backyard.
    • Raise money for charity by having a car wash, BBQ or yard sale.
    • Go camping, even if it’s in your backyard. You can roast marshmallows, sing camp songs and tell ghost stories.
    • If you go on a family vacation be sure to take lots of pics. When you get back you can make a cool memory album for each member of your family.
    • Check out your local thrift store and adopt a new look to rock when you go back to school this Fall (don’t forget to donate your old clothes to charity).
    • Get a summer job, or do odd jobs like yard work, painting, babysitting or dog walking. You can gain job experience and save up some cash to buy something you really wanted.
    • Have a movie marathon sleep over with your friends, or binge watch your favorite TV show on DVD.
    • Organize a fun tournament for you and your friends. You could play volleyball, basketball, ultimate Frisbee, or washer toss.
    • Learn to cook. Or if you already know how to cook try out some new recipes. You could even invent a new kind of pizza.
    • Make playlists for different activates like parties, cleaning, exercising, relaxing etc.
    • Start a book club with your friends.
    • Have an old school board game night. Don’t forget to make a trophy to compete for.

There are a ton of things to do no matter where you live- sometimes your imagination will be your best tool to discovering new and exciting activities.

A famous comedian named Louis C.K. once said:

“I’m bored’ is a useless thing to say. I mean you live in a great, big, vast world that you’ve seen none percent of. Even the inside of your own mind is endless; it goes on forever, inwardly, do you understand? “

  • It’s Okay to Need Help: Therapy and You

It’s Okay to Need Help: Therapy and You

Throughout life, everyone needs help. Whether it is a child learning to walk or speak, a teenager learning responsibility, or an adult learning how to truly listen. All of us have learned something, in different circumstances or the same. We will continue to need help and so will people in the next life (if there is one). So when your heart starts to get heavy and your eyes water, it is okay to crave a helping hand.

Needing someone to talk too does not necessarily mean you are weak or needy. Everyone needs support without judgment; it is not an unnatural thing. That person can be a close friend, a close family member, as long as you can speak openly to them. They should never hold anything against you, and they should be trustworthy enough not to tell anyone else what you have divulged to them.

Just because you need someone to talk to does not mean it has to be a therapist. It can be someone educated in helping others with their problems, i.e. a counsellor, social worker or mentor. Therapy comes from the Latin word therapīa which literally means “curing” or “healing”. So, therapy is only ever meant to help and in any way possible.

There are different types of therapists to help with different types of problems, in different ways. The most common type of therapy is Psychotherapy:

“Psychotherapy is therapy in which a person with mental or emotional problems talks with another person (talking therapies). This other person may be a psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor, clinical social worker, member of the clergy, alternative practitioner, or (to use the concept in its broadest sense) any helpful person. “[1]

Here is a list of common psychotherapies and their focus:
