  • Memorizing vs. Understanding: Knowing the Distinctions between the Two

Memorizing vs. Understanding: Knowing the Distinctions between the Two

For all students, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed when there is a ton of schoolwork to complete and tons of exams to prepare for. Sometimes, when getting ready for a quiz, it’s more common to come up with practice tests to be reviewed prior to the big day.

Some examinations are designed in a way that students need to do a lot of memorization, especially those which are multiple choices or fill-in-the-blanks, while some, like essay exams or problem or case-based exams, are constructed where memorization is not necessary. Rather, it calls for more understanding of concepts. All of these exam types effective tools of learning, but let’s get in-depth into what advantages and drawbacks memorization vs. understanding offer.

    What They Truly Mean?

First, let’s differentiate the two. Memorization is when you instill something in your memory, like the lines for a play, lyrics for a song, formula for a mathematical equation, or the verses of a poem. Memorizing something requires a lot of brain power as it’s not easy to remember something right off the top of your head. This is the reason why some students rely on techniques to help them memorize.

One of the more common tools for memorization is using mnemonics. You can apply this whether you’re memorizing Canadian Prime Ministers or Shakespeare’s works. For example, grammar rules dictate that when using multiple adjectives, one would need to follow a certain order: 1. Opinion; 2. Size; 3) Age; 4) Shape; 5) Color; 6) Origin; 7) Material; and 8) Purpose, and a mnemonic device you can use to memorize these is the acronym OSASCOMP.

On the other hand, understanding means having the sum of your knowledge about a topic or subject. It pertains more to using your comprehension abilities. For example, when reading a figurative language-laden poem, you aim for coming up with your interpretation rather than knowing that particular poem line by line.

Is One Better than the Other?

When it comes to memorization or understanding, it’s difficult to say whether one is better than the other since they are both effective ways to retain information and acquire knowledge of a particular subject or topic.

But simply memorizing something like important dates or figures in history doesn’t offer any gains for the students unless they know the impact of these dates or figures are. Sure, you or your friends can win points in Trivia Nights if you are able to pinpoint the exact date or location of the Battle of Waterloo, but can you explain why this event had such a great impression in World History? What significance does it offer modern society?

In addition, understanding something instead of memorizing it helps you to better apply that concept or theory. For example, you probably memorized the four Ps of marketing: Price, Product, Promotion, and Place, but if you have to market a new game app, for instance, would you know how to apply those four Ps? You can easily do it if you have a good grasp of the concept and not merely knowing what those four Ps stand for.

How You Can Make Both Work for You

As we’ve learned above, retaining information is, of course, useful in some aspects, as being able to comprehend something, but there are far more benefits that await you if you know how to make use of both because ultimately, they can go hand in hand. Furthermore, understanding information can lead to better memorization of that information.

Recalling something from your textbooks or from the notes you’ve jotted down in class reinforces your understanding of the information, and most of the time, one cannot exist without the other. For instance, in philosophy class, you can’t provide a real-life example or analogy of deontological ethics if you don’t have an idea of this theory that’s been presented. Of course, merely knowing the model does not automatically mean you understand it, that’s why it’s always ideal to think about it in a practical sense or a real-life setting.

To conclude, memorization and understanding are both necessary tools for learning, and you can’t dismiss one for the other.

  • Career Profile: Dietetic Technician

    Career Profile: Dietetic Technician

Everyone has to eat to live, but not everyone gets the right nutrition to stay healthy. That’s where dietetic technicians can help. These people work together with dietitians and their clients to provide good, nutritious meals to keep people healthy. If you enjoy working with food, it might be the right job for you.

What kinds of meals do you eat at your house?  Do they include fruit, vegetables, and proteins like eggs, meat, or beans?  At home, people can normally plan their meals to be as nutritious as possible, although they might not always eat very well. When they are in a hospital, school, or other institution, they might not be able to control what they eat. Also, sometimes people choose the wrong foods because they cannot afford good options or they dislike healthy choices.

Dietetic technicians work with dietitians to help people eat well. Often, they work in hospitals, nursing homes, food manufacturers, schools, or other places where many people eat or get their food. Often, the dietitians will plan meals for seniors or students and the dietetic technicians will do the actual cooking and helping the people eat. Often, the technicians have to observe how much food the people eat and keep records so that the dietitians can change the menus if necessary.

Education can be a large part of what dietetic technicians do. Helping people understand why they should eat vegetables instead of marshmallows is good for all clients, but people at different ages also have different needs.

When people get older, for example, they generally eat less than they did when they were forty or fifty years old. Children also need certain foods to help them grow, but adults eating the same diet could become fat. Some people need to cut out almost all of the sugar in their diets to avoid diabetes, while others are allergic to peanuts or wheat. Dietetic technicians need to know all of the different possibilities and be able to find plans that fit each person’s needs.

In some cases, dietetic technicians do the same work as dietitians and might need a university degree. This can be useful, but many dietetic technicians have a two-year certificate in food services from a place like the Canadian Healthcare Association. Ryerson University’s website has information on some of the programs available in Canada, and other universities or community colleges are also good places to try. Some employers might hire people without official qualifications, but getting some training is a good idea to help open up job possibilities.

Working as a dietetic technician is not usually physically demanding, but it can involve cuts and burns from cooking and emotional strain from working with difficult people. Anyone getting into this field should be patient and organized, and also be able to cook well. Being able to plan meals that are delicious as well as nutritious will help make the job easier since people will be glad to eat something that tastes good. If you love planning meals and preparing food, this might be the job for you.

  • Career Profile: Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

    Career Profile: Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

Medicine can be a complicated field since what doctors and nurses see on the outside might not show the real problem. When they need to know what is happening inside a patient, they need help from diagnostic medical sonographers. These technicians use ultrasound machines to help provide information for medical staff to diagnose and treat illnesses. Their work is important for helping patients and the people who care for them.

Most people who want to become diagnostic medical sonogaphers go through a twenty-month program at a community or career college. They can decide to specialize in an area like abdominal sonography for patients who might have problems like appendicitis or obstetrical for pregnant women.

Most courses include both classroom work and practical experience. People in this job have to know how to use ultrasound equipment and to interpret what they see. Being able to find problems and to recommend treatments is helpful, usually in consultation with doctors and nurses.

Diagnostic medical sonographers should have good technical skills and be good with their hands. They also need good communication skills since they have to talk with patients and doctors. Writing or public speaking practice can help people learn the skills they need, and philosophy courses in university can help with understanding what patients need beyond just medication or surgery.

Learning to work through problems can help diagnostic medical sonographers find the health issues that people are facing. People in this field spend a lot of time looking at screens and adjusting ultrasound machines to get the best images possible.

Besides technical skill, attention to detail is one of the most important parts of being a diagnostic medical sonographer. Becoming qualified to work in this field involves taking the Canadian Clinical Skills Assessment and the Sonography Canada written exam. When people pass these two exams, they can work in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other places where people go for help with health questions.

Often the work includes moving patients into the right position for the scan after explaining the process. The next step is to process the film, code it, and enter the information into the patients’ records.

Almost ninety percent of the people working as diagnostic medical sonographers are women, but the job is also good for men. Wages start at about $24 per hour or $50,000 per year and can rise to almost $50 per hour or over $100,000 per year.

Experience is important in this job, especially since understanding what the scans mean takes practice. Keeping up with new technology and techniques in this field is also very important. This might mean that sonographers need to take courses throughout their careers, but they can also learn many of the new techniques on the job.

Working as a diagnostic medical sonographers is not physically difficult, although it can be tiring with all of the detailed work. As long as people can still see well enough to find tiny details on the scans and are physically strong enough to help patients into position, they can continue to work in this field. It might be the right one for you.

  • Career Profile: Actuary

    Career Profile: Actuary

Suppose that you had to make an important decision about money. You might want to get some advice. For insurance companies, actuaries help people to make good decisions about how to make their companies work better.

Actuaries work in offices where they help to analyze information. Often, they work with statistics in insurance companies to help with decisions about what customers will buy. People in this field should have a background in mathematics and statistics so that they can analyze information about accidents, retirement, and sickness. Insurance companies use this information to help them decide how much to charge for their service. The work of an actuary is not normally physically difficult, but it can be tiring to work with statistics all day.

When people buy insurance, they pay a certain amount of money every month to get money back if something happens. For example, people in dangerous jobs might buy accident insurance to get money in case they are hurt too badly to work. Business owners might buy fire or flood insurance in case their buildings are damaged. People have many different reasons for buying insurance, and actuaries can help the companies make good decisions.

Working in this field normally requires a university degree in something like actuarial science or statistics. Several universities in Canada, like the University of Calgary in Alberta and McMaster University in Ontario, have programs that can give people the training that they need.

Being able to work with numbers is important, and being able to solve problems, analyze risks, and see possibilities is helpful. Most university programs include a combination of classroom work and practical experience. At the end of the program, students need to take exams in actuarial studies to be able to work in their field.

Many different factors can be important in how actuaries analyze risks for insurance companies. For theft insurance, for example, actuaries need to know statistics about crime in the area to decide how much to charge customers. Flood insurance in a mountain city would also be different from the same insurance in a flat area close to a lake or river.

The work that actuaries do can depend on where they find jobs. In big cities, actuaries might be able to specialize in one kind of analysis, such as fire insurance. They might also be able to work in other kinds of businesses to help with decisions about how much of a product to make or how much to charge. In small towns, they would likely have to know a lot about many different subjects. They might help sell all kinds of insurance or even work with factory owners or other business people.

Actuaries normally work regular hours, and they might work closely with others or mainly alone. Salaries in this field start at close to $46,000 and can rise to $139,000 as people gain experience. People who enjoy numbers can stay in this job for their entire careers, but they can also use their skills for developing software or supervising other people. If you like dealing with risk and uncertainty, you might want to consider becoming an actuary.

  • Career Profile: Medical Equipment Preparer

    Career Profile: Medical Equipment Preparer

When you go to the doctor, you might see a few different people. Besides the doctor, you might see the receptionist and maybe a few nurses or other doctors. Many people help with health care, including medical equipment preparers. If you are the kind of person who likes working to keep things clean and organized, becoming a medical equipment preparer might be the right job for you.

Most medical appointments require some kind of equipment. If you need a vaccination for measles or you need to have a mole removed, the doctor will need some equipment, like needles and cotton balls. When doctors do surgery, they need scalpels and many other types of equipment.

Sometimes the doctors and nurses can prepare their own equipment, but often they have many other things to think about. Before surgery, doctors and nurses have to make sure that the patients are breathing properly and doing as well as possible. For regular appointments, doctors might be in too much of a rush to spend time looking for the right tools. Medical equipment preparers can help make appointments and surgery go much more smoothly than they otherwise would.

An ability to organize is one of the most important aspects of being a medical equipment preparer. Different medical procedures require different types of equipment, and preparers need to know what is necessary for each one. This might involve following a list of supplies or asking what a particular doctor or nurse needs. The first step is cleaning the equipment and making sure that everything is working properly, and then the pieces are ready to go onto trays.

The work of a medical equipment preparer is not very difficult, but it requires care. Missing one piece of equipment could delay surgery or mean that patients have to come back for second appointments. One of the most important parts of preparing equipment is to make sure that all of it is clean so that it will not cause infections. Learning how to sterilize the equipment is an important part of the job.

If you want to become a medical equipment preparer, you will need a high school education and a certificate in sterile processing. Many community colleges and technical schools have certificate programs in this field, and you can get both practical experience and theory, which can help you do your work well. People in this field can get work in doctors’ offices and hospitals, as well as other places where people go for help with their health.

Depending on where they work and the amount of experience they have, people in this work can earn between $27,000 and $51,000 per year. This kind of job does not take a lot of strength, but it can be busy. Being organized is very important, and also being able to handle a variety of instruments without dropping them.

The job of medical equipment preparer might seem like a very simple one, but it is very important. If you get into this work, you can help many people and have a satisfying career.

  • Career Profile: Director of Dental Surgery

Career Profile: Director of Dental Surgery

When you get a cavity in your tooth, you need to get a filling. If you have a more serious problem, you might need surgery. A director of dental surgery can help make that happen.

Becoming a director of dental surgery involves a lot of education. Normally, people in this area have training and experience in dentistry. People spend at least three or four years in university to become dentists. Specializing in dental surgery could take a few extra years in programs that include practical experience and classroom work. Most universities have programs in dentistry, and some community colleges might have a few courses in the field.

Directors of dental surgery need to know about dentistry, but they also need to know about business. Getting training in office management is a good idea, since directors often need to deal with the same kinds of issues that any other manager would face. Hiring employees, making sure that the office has enough supplies, and keeping track of surgery schedules might all be part of the work.

Dental surgeons, who are often called oral surgeons, generally start out with earning about $176,000 per year and can earn more than $345,000 by the time they retire. Depending on where they work, directors of dental surgery can earn similar salaries or even more.

Directors of dental surgery can spend some time sitting, although in busy offices they might not have many opportunities to relax. Still, this is a good job for dentists or dental surgeons who are physically unable to continue with their jobs. Shaky hands, for example, might make active dentistry impossible, but working as a director is an option for people who are no longer able to practice dentistry, or also as a first choice for people who enjoy that kind of work.

Like all jobs, the work of director of dental surgery can be a good or bad choice, depending on what people are able and willing to do. The job has a lot of responsibility, and it can be very stressful when things go wrong. If a patient has a bad experience with surgery, for example, the director might need to deal with the complaint and any lawsuit that might come up. Scheduling surgery can also be difficult sometimes, especially when an operation takes longer than expected or there is an emergency that has to come first.

Being flexible is very important for people in this position, but it is also necessary to be organized so that the work can get done. Directors need to be able to work alone at times but also be good with people. If two surgeons want the same time in the operating room, for example, the director might need to talk to them to work out a solution. In case of a major crisis, such as a fire or flood in the building, the director might need to take charge and help decide what to do next. If this describes you, why not consider becoming a director or dental surgery?

  • How Travel Can Change You Forever

How Travel Can Change You Forever

The world has never before been so vast and so small all at once. Human civilization spans the globe, but modern technology and travel makes it easier than ever to connect with people from anywhere. Trips that once took our ancestors months to complete can now be traversed in a matter of hours. If you plan it right, it is not that expensive, either. Take advantage of this to venture to other countries while still in university or after graduation. The benefits of this go far beyond simply having fun.

Traveling lets you see the world in a whole new way. Reading about or watching videos of other places is nothing at all like being there in person. These are only glimpses into another town or country, sharing tidbits that the content creator selected from their perspective. The only way to truly know a place, to see the good and the bad, is to be there. Instead of simply reading about cultural differences, you will be faced with them constantly as you walk the streets. Instead watching a YouTube video on another language, you will be forced to use it to order dinner or get to your Airbnb. These are unforgettable experiences that shatter preconceived notions about the planet and bombard you with the reality that the world is a massive, complex, and nuanced mixture of people and ways of thinking.

We live in an interconnected society. Traveling can now be far more than an isolated adventure or an escape from your life at home. You can meet new friends and continue that friendship online through social media. Job opportunities in other countries can be pursued remotely, which allows you to continue immersing yourself in that culture via work and offers flexibility to continue traveling. The insights and experience you gain can be utilized in your studies when you come back to your college or university classes. Your trek allows you to bring a lot back with you, and it can have a lifelong impact.

There are studies reinforcing the idea that travel actually changes your brain and how you think. By engaging in local environments abroad, you can improve your creativity in both your studies and work. Navigating the streets and trains of a foreign town, ordering dinner in the local language, and diving into an environment that is completely different from what you are used to are all ways to sharpen your mind. Your brain takes in all of these stimuli and this acts like a workout that strengthens and improves your mental performance. You will return home with a greater sense of independence and confidence. This will help you tackle the complex and scary world of post-secondary education, as well as the even grander world of work and adulthood. After high school, we are plunged into huge decisions and greater control over our own lives, and you need to do all you can to prepare yourself for that.

There are many ways to broaden your mind and improve your chances for success in adulthood. Traveling is an exciting way to go about that. The new experiences, challenges and challenges you will face in other countries will help you grow into a stronger, smarter, and more confident person. By venturing to other places, you will be more prepared for the place you call home.

  • Different Types of Resumes

    Different Types of Resumes

Most students will start their first job in high school or college students, whether it is a part time job during the school year, or full time work during the summer break.  Since in many cases this will be the first official job you have to apply and interview for, you will need a resume.

There are a lot of different types of resumes, and it can be difficult to know which one is the best option for the job you’re applying for, and will display your skills to your advantage.  Usually, the type of resume you choose will depend on how much relevant experience you have for the job, because each resume type will highlight different information.

All resumes need to include your contact details clearly displayed, usually across the top of the page.  You should have your full name, address, phone number, and email address included, so that prospective employers will know who you are, and how to get in touch with you.

    Chronological Resume

Like the name suggests, a chronological resume organizes your information in chronological order, backwards from most recent work experience to older experience.  This is the most common type of resume, and is most useful for students who already have a decent amount of work experience, such as several previous jobs or volunteer positions over the course of a few years.

Chronological resumes are ideal for showcasing your most recent work experience when that experience is the most relevant to the job you are applying for. Group your information according to each job or volunteer position, and include the job title, whether it was full-time, part-time, casual, or seasonal employment, and the company name.  Beneath that, you should list short bullet points of what you did in that job — responsibilities, regular tasks, notable projects, and other skills that are relevant to the new job’s list of requirements.

Following the work experience section, you should include the details of your education, including the school name, city, and years you started and graduated.  If you are still in school, you can note your expected future graduation date.  Follow this up with a section listing any additional skills, awards, or notable accomplishments.

    Skills-Based or Functional Resume

A functional or skills-based resume is one that can be very useful for students, especially those applying for their very first job, as it highlights skills and abilities rather than specific previous employment.

Your first section in this resume format should list skills you possess that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.  It’s a good idea to group related skills together, such as Organizational, Interpersonal, Technical, Physical, Customer Service, and any other skill groups you might have, such as skills with animals. Generally, you will want to list the most important skills first, followed by other skills.

Follow your skills section with your education information, the same as in a chronological resume, and any notable achievements or extra-curricular activities.

    Creative Resume

While this is another common type of resume, it comes with a note to use with caution.  Creative resumes are ones that use non-traditional layouts, formatting, colours, or images, in addition to text.  It’s important to remember that not every company or job will appreciate a resume that is fancy or non-standard, as these can be harder to read or process.  Also, in many cases digital resumes will still be printed out in black and white, or will be submitted through an online applicant management software, both of which will negate any creative look you add to your resume.

There are some jobs where creative resumes are appropriate, such as jobs in the visual arts, graphic and web design, videography, or marketing.  However, your best bet–to be sure that prospective employers can see your creative efforts properly–will always be a clean, professional, standard resume with links to your online portfolio or with separate samples of your work attached, depending on the job requirements.

Regardless of which resume type you use, be sure that all information is well organized, written clearly and concisely, and with no spelling or grammar errors.
