    Career Profile: Market Research Analysts

Suppose that you or a friend wanted to start a business selling cookies or taking care of pets. You would want to know as much as possible about your potential customers before you started. A market research analyst could help. If you enjoy talking with people and working with numbers, this could be the right job for you.

Market research analysts work to understand the public, especially related to what they buy and why. If a scarf manufacturer can sell blue scarves but not orange ones, for example, a market research analyst might be able to find out why. If someone wants to open a pizza restaurant in an area where similar food is already available, the analyst could help the person decide if there are enough customers to make it worth the effort.

Making these kinds of decisions can be difficult without accurate information. Market research analysts try to get the information and compare it to other data to see if it is accurate. They call people to ask for their preferences, go from door to door to conduct surveys, check government databases for information about the people in an area, and otherwise try to find out as much as they can about the situation.

Large amounts of information are not very useful without someone to interpret the data. Analysts use their knowledge and experience to decide on the importance of different pieces of information and then put their conclusions into a report for the client. For the pizza restaurant issue, for example, they might look at similar neighbourhoods to see how many Italian restaurants have survived there.

Market research analysts often conduct surveys online, over the phone, or in person to find the information they need. For the pizza restaurant, they might contact people in the neighbourhood to see how often they eat out, how much they are willing to pay, and anything else that might be relevant.

Sometimes, this stage involves walking long distances through a neighbourhood or stopping people to talk to them in malls or parks. The pandemic has reduced the amount of face-to-face contact, and now much of the work is done through the phone or online. However, market research analysts should still be prepared to go outside in bad weather. People might also be rude or too busy to answer questions, making market research difficult.

Once the information is ready, the next step is to write a report for the client. This stage might also involve meeting with the managers to explain what the numbers really mean and how various factors affect the business. Sometimes, these managers and business owners ask for advice on the best choice to make. The market research analyst might not be very well qualified to give this type of advice, but it is helpful to have some knowledge that is useful for the client.

Market research analysts can work with government or private businesses. Often, they work for a series of clients, but some large companies have enough money to hire a full-time analyst. A four-year bachelor’s degree in marketing or statistics from a university is usually necessary, and experience in the field is helpful. In high school, courses in English and mathematics are useful. Depending on where they work and their level of experience, market research analysts earn between $41,000 and $78,000 per year.

A job as a market research analyst can be intense but rewarding. If you enjoy statistics and talking to people about what they like, this might be the job for you.

  • Career Profile: Teacher Assistants

    Career Profile: Teacher Assistants

In your classes at school, you probably have a regular teacher and maybe an assistant who helps with some of the lessons or with students who need personal attention. Teacher assistants help to provide students with the help that they need while relieving some of the pressure on teachers. For people who enjoy helping others with their work, the job of teacher assistant could be a good choice.

As the job title suggests, teacher assistants work to help teachers in their classes. The exact job can vary, depending on the teachers and the courses. A teacher assistant in a math course, for example, might help students with multiplication or division problems. In a history or English course, the assistant might give presentations on various topics like Canadian prime ministers or on poetry. Sometimes, teacher assistants photocopy exercise sheets, hand out textbooks or do whatever else the teacher needs.

Educational requirements for teacher assistants can vary, but normally a high school diploma is the minimum level. Many people in this field also have a university degree or a community college diploma in a field such as English as a Second Language teaching. Teacher assistants who want to work in a specific subject, such as mathematics or biology, should have post-secondary training in that subject.

One aspect that educational assistants need to consider is the grade level where they want to work. Assisting in high school requires a deeper knowledge of the subject matter than in elementary school, but working with younger children requires special techniques to be able to speak at their level. Many people in this career specialize in one age group, but some people may be able to switch between the very young students and older ones. Being able to work with a variety of age groups can help people in this field to find jobs more easily than if they are confined to one or two grades.

Working conditions for teacher assistants can vary, depending on the school and the help that the teacher needs. Often, the job requires some outdoor work, but most of the work is indoors. Some classes are large and others are small, and some are easier to deal with than others. In some cases, educational assistants might spend much of their time just keeping the class orderly. In other cases, people in this job might have the chance to teach lessons or to grade assignments.

Jobs for educational assistants can be available in almost any public or private school. However, large schools are more likely to have the money to pay for people in this field. Educational assistants with special skills, such as in mathematics, languages, or music, are likely to find jobs more easily than people with a more general background. Salaries start at about $17.15 per hour and can rise to $30.75 per hour with experience. Taking additional courses can help people gain new skills and higher salaries in many cases.

Working as an educational assistant can be a busy and sometimes stressful job, but it can also be very satisfying. If you enjoy helping others with their studies, it could be a good choice for you.

  • Career Profile: Graders and Sorters, Agricultural Products

Career Profile: Graders and Sorters, Agricultural Products

Some people like to sort out anything that they have in front of them, whether that is jellybeans, coins, or anything else. Agricultural products also need to be sorted out to ensure that people can buy good quality food and eat well. If you are detail-oriented, you might want to consider the job of grader and sorter for agricultural products.

Like most jobs related to farms, career prospects for graders and sorters for agricultural products are best near farming areas. With modern transportation, however, people in this trade can often work in cities where the products are shipped. This career is always in demand to some extent, although job prospects might vary, depending on the state of the economy.

Grading and sorting agricultural products can vary from one part of the country to another. The products could include grain, fruit, or anything else that farms produce. Some of the aspects that people in this field look for are colour, appearance, species, length, width, feel, smell, and quality. For example, someone sorting strawberries would look for bruised fruit or any that are too small to include in a basket. Sometimes graders and sorters weigh the products, but sometimes they use visual assessments. Then they discard the products that are not good enough to sell.

Keeping good records is an important part of working in this field. Each product requires a tag to show what it is and where it should go. Some products need to be shipped across the country, and people in this field need to know the length of time it takes to get a product from one side of the country to another. If it takes a fruit a week to ripen after it is picked, for example, graders and sorters need to take that into account when they ship the agricultural products to another part of the country.

The province where graders and sorters work can affect the kinds of products that they assess since different climates and types of soil affect the agricultural products that grow in the area. The Prairie Provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan tend to have more grain than other areas, and provinces such as Ontario and British Columbia have large amounts of fruit.

Generally, graders and sorters need less than a high school diploma, but some employers might require more education. Having good eyesight with or without glasses is important. Standing at a table for hours at a time can be very tiring, and people might want to move on to office work as they age. Wages average about 21.99 per hour, starting at $32,000 annually and can rise to $22 per hour or $47,000 per year. Getting a diploma or certificate in an area related to agriculture can help people advance in this job.

Job opportunities in this trade can vary, but prospects are likely to be good in the coming years. This is especially true for people who are willing to move to places where these jobs are available. Different times of the year tend to be busier than others because of the times when the agricultural products ripen. If this type of job appeals to you, why not consider a career as a grader and sorter for agricultural products?

  • Career Profile: Rock Splitters, Quarry

    Career Profile: Rock Splitters, Quarry

Some jobs can almost seem invisible even when they are important. Have you ever wondered where the small rocks for gravel roads or pathways and gardens come from? Many of those stones are likely the result of a rock splitter’s work in a quarry. If you enjoy working outside and are good with your hands, this could be a good job for you.

Many of the rocks that people use to line their flower beds or to construct buildings come from quarries, but they usually must be broken up before they are useful. Quarries are large rocky areas where people can find granite or other stones to use for building houses, making roads, or many other projects. Normally, the rocks are far too big to transport anywhere or to use as they are. Rock splitters need to cut the rocks down to a smaller size before anyone can use them.

Working as a rock splitter can be very hard physical labour, even with machines and tools to help make the job easier. People in this trade need to work outside in all kinds of weather, although the work may be impossible in winter, depending on the location. Stormy weather also makes the job difficult and dangerous in many cases. Work might sometimes be cancelled because of these conditions, but rock splitters often work in unpleasant weather.

The job can also be loud and physically demanding as workers use noisy machines and move large rocks around. Injuries are common, and the work can be too difficult for people as they get older. Hearing loss might also be a problem for some people, and it is important to wear any safety gear that the managers recommend. In some cases, rock splitters might have to work at the top of cliffs, and it is important not to be afraid of heights.

Normally, rock splitters need a high school education, followed by on-the-job training. Jobs are available in the areas of mining, quarrying, and construction. The availability of jobs depends on the economy and other factors, but most of the work is in the rockier parts of Canada rather than farming regions or forests. Salaries start at about $39,000 per year and can rise to $48,750 per year. Some areas of the country tend to have higher salaries than others, and certain companies might pay more for their rock splitters than others.

You can already start to prepare for this job in high school. Courses in communication, trades, first aid, and geography are useful, and it is important to be physically fit. A certain amount of manual dexterity is also useful for handling tools. Efficiency and an ability to follow instructions can help people succeed in this job. Although rock splitters often work with other people, they should also be able to work alone.

Working as a rock splitter might not sound interesting, but it can be a very important job. Without rock splitters, other people would be unable to do their jobs. If you are strong and enjoy working with your hands, this trade might be a good choice for you.

  • Career Profile: Audio and Video Equipment Technicians

Career Profile: Audio and Video Equipment Technicians

If you watch a video online or a program on television, or you listen to a radio show, you might think mainly about the actors or presenters but not as much about the people who keep the equipment running. However, the job of audio and video equipment technician is very important, and it could be the right job for you.

Recording audio or video clips can be quite complicated. With video, the technician must consider questions such as the amount of light, any background noise, and sometimes the weather if the video is being taken outside. For audio technicians, some of the factors are background noise, sound effects, and the different volumes of sound that need to go into the same recording. Getting the recording right often involves adjusting for people with loud or soft voices, watching for who is in the sun and who is in the shade, and much more.

Working as an audio or video equipment technician is much more complicated than just adjusting the volume for different people’s voices. People in this field need to know how the recording will look on a screen and sound on people’s radios or phones. Often, this requires going to the location where the audio or video will be recorded and testing various options for sound and lighting.

Some people may be able to learn this trade on the job, especially in smaller communications companies. However, most people get a certificate that takes from one to three years to complete. They learn techniques for choosing what to record, editing their files, and even doing minor repairs to the equipment. High school courses that are useful for this field include mathematics, English, and anything technical or artistic.

Jobs in this field are available in film and movie companies, but also in universities, schools, and other organizations. Sometimes, the work of audio or video equipment technician might be part of another job, such as teacher. Wages vary from one region to another, but they generally start below $20 per hour and can rise to more than $45 per hour. The average salary for this job is over $67,000 per year.

Audio and video equipment technicians need to know about their equipment and surroundings, but it also helps if they know how to research and tell a story. In some cases, the technicians might help with planning the recording and choosing the people to be involved, although often their role is limited to running the equipment.

People in this field should be reasonably healthy and strong since the job often involves lifting heavy equipment. The hours can be long, especially if a video depends on the weather or if the people involved in the project have other commitments that will take them away. Being organized and efficient is important in this career. Flexibility is very useful, since if a section of the recording is unusable, the technician would need to redo the work or find something to substitute for the original segment.

In Canada, much of the major video and audio work is done in Vancouver and Toronto, but jobs are also available elsewhere. Many small towns have their own radio stations, and small television networks can be a good place to look for a job. If you like the idea of working as an audio or video equipment operator, you can start developing your skills now already.

  • Why Red Seal Trades Might Work for You

Why Red Seal Trades Might Work for You

You may have heard the advice, “Learn a trade – it’s an important skill to have.” That’s good advice: there will always be a need for carpenters, electricians, plumbers, mechanics, and welders. But what exactly is a Red Seal trade? What financial assistance is there for a person interested in becoming a tradesperson? How do you find out which trade is right for you? Read on to find out.

In short, a Red Seal trade is one where you may work as a tradesperson in any province without having to take extra qualifications. The training and certifications of Red Seal trades are not individualized to each province; rather, they are standardized on a national level. Although each province is responsible for educating and training apprentices, or those who are at an entry level in their industry of choice, the Red Seal Program promotes the coordination of standards across the country. But in order to qualify as a journeyperson with a Red Seal, apprentices need a mix of classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Although they earn money while training on the job, acquiring the necessary tools and classroom instruction is expensive.

The government recognizes the necessity to fund tradespeople. There is a provision called the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant, which is a $1000-$2000 per year taxable cash grant for apprentices once they have successfully completed their first or second year or level of their program in one of the Red Seal trades. Another is the Apprenticeship Completion Grant, which is available to an apprentice who completes their training and acquires their journeyperson certification in a Red Seal trade. But tools are expensive, too. The government provides the Tradesperson’s Tools Deduction of up to $500 yearly to assist in the purchase of new tools necessary for the trade in question. That leaves one final question: which trade to choose?

In Ontario, there are forty-seven trades of the Program’s available 55 that you may choose from. These range from Automotive Service Technician to Baker to Hairstylist to Welder. The official website, www.red-seal.ca, contains a detailed job description of each. For instance, its page on carpentry tells us that “Carpenters construct, renovate and repair residential, institutional, commercial, and industrial … structures made of wood, steel, concrete and other materials.” We read about the risks involved, knowledge that a carpenter ought to have, and other useful skills. It tells us the career path a carpenter may be interested in taking. Further down the page, there is a chart that tells us that there is a provincial certification in all thirteen provinces and territories. Beyond that is additional information with links to relevant documents. You can also find this information on any of the other Red Seal trade pages. Read them over and decide which one may fit you best. Do you have an affinity for working in the kitchen? Bakers and Chefs can become Red Seal certified. Like tinkering with engines and other machines? A wide variety of trades will let you do just that: Automotive Service Technicians and Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians are among those who may acquire their Red Seal.

The opportunities are numerous, and you can work anywhere in the country. Why not look into qualifying for a Red Seal trade?

  • Why Should Girls Get Involved with STEM?

Why Should Girls Get Involved with STEM?

In our society, girls seem to be underrepresented in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Even more interesting is that in contrast to girls, boys seem to be actively involved in all of these fields. So what’s the deal? Why are girls not participating in these fields as much as boys? These are questions that are stumping researchers and other experts.

There is a stereotype that has been circulating around, that maybe girls just aren’t as good at these subjects as their male counterparts. However, research suggests that there isn’t any evidence to support this claim. We all know girls are just as capable and smart as boys. Researchers have found that, when tested, girls are equally as successful in any of these subjects as boys. However, as long as this negative stereotype continues to persist it can cause real harm. It can actually cause girls to believe that they aren’t good at these subjects before even trying them. There is a natural bias for people to assume that science and math are fields best suited to males and that the arts are better suited to females. Why not disprove this theory?

People also believe that maybe girls aren’t involved in STEM because there aren’t enough female role models in these fields to look up to. Seeing women who are thriving and successful in these fields could make them more enticing to younger females. People like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg have made their fortunes in fields related to STEM. However, there still seems to be lacking female equivalents. It would be great to see females who have invented or developed ideas related to STEM in our society. The women that are contributing and involved in STEM should be given more visibility in order to promote these fields.

There are many reasons why girls should get involved in STEM. Firstly, positions related to these fields are abundant. Why not make contributions to them and stand out from others? Scientists are trying to solve some of the most difficult questions in our time. Engineers are designing different things that we can use to better our lives and make things easier. With the internet and other forms of communication becoming more popular, there are a wide variety of job opportunities relating to technology.  People in these professions are doing creative and innovative things. In addition to this, these positions provide a person with a really great income (who doesn’t like money?). Helping the world and making great money doesn’t sound like a bad thing to me!

  • Career Profile: Set and Exhibit Designers

Career Profile: Set and Exhibit Designers

If you go to a movie, a play, or a museum, you might barely notice the background, but it is very important. It helps give people the context of the story and makes it seem real. Set and exhibit designers work with directors, producers, and other professionals to prepare sets or exhibits to help people appreciate and understand what they are seeing.

Becoming a set and exhibit designer usually involves getting a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the fine arts. Normally, this training takes at least four to six years of studying after high school. Some people might be able to get a job without these qualifications, but having a background in the theory behind set and exhibit design is helpful. For example, people can use what they learn about the history of the set and exhibit design to do something unique and interesting. This can help them stand out to employers and make it easier to get jobs.

Besides learning the basics, set and exhibit designers might specialize in a particular era or type of design. One person might choose to work mainly with sets related to the Renaissance era in the 1500s or to work mainly on exhibits related to animals or the climate. However, general knowledge is still important.

In high school, people can already start to prepare for this job. Art or theatre classes are useful, as well as possibly mathematics for learning to calculate spaces and amounts. English or history classes can also help people understand the important features of each project and to communicate clearly.

Set and exhibit designers can work in a variety of places. Often, they work in film, video, television, and theatre. Exhibit designers are most likely to find work at museums or retail stores. Someone who can do both will have the best chance of finding work, but even some smaller cities or towns can have a few jobs in this field. Cities or towns with several museums or theatres are the best places to find work. Salaries usually start at over $70,897 per year and can rise to more than $94,000 per year, depending on the type and location of the job.

People working as set and exhibit designers should be able to work with others but also to work alone. The first part of any job involves consulting the people at the theatre or museum to learn what they want. Next, the set or exhibit designer might conduct some research about the place or era being portrayed. Accuracy is important so that the set or exhibit looks as real as possible. For example, having a modern car in a set portraying a scene from the 1930s would look wrong. Having the details right helps the audience experience the play or the exhibit more fully.

Daily work for a set and exhibit designer can vary, depending on the situation. Some people in this field spend much of their time in an office, making drawings and measurements for the set or exhibit. Others might be very much involved in putting the different parts together and might sometimes need to lift heavy objects. Either way, they should be available to help solve any problems that arise.

Working as a set and exhibit designer can be an exciting job for people who are creative and able to work with others. You can already start to prepare for this career.

  • Exploring the Fast Track to Employment: How Career Colleges Accelerate Job Readiness in Ontario and BC

Exploring the Fast Track to Employment: How Career Colleges Accelerate Job Readiness in Ontario and BC

In today’s fast-paced economy, job readiness is more crucial than ever. As traditional educational pathways often take years to complete, many students are turning to alternative education forms that can fast-track their entry into the workforce. Career colleges in Ontario and British Columbia have emerged as pivotal institutions in this regard, offering accelerated courses and hands-on training designed to meet immediate industry needs.

    What are Career Colleges?

Career colleges are private post-secondary institutions that offer specialized training programs aimed at preparing students for specific careers. These colleges are regulated by bodies like the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) in Canada, ensuring they meet high educational standards. In Ontario and BC, these institutions also align with provincial regulations to maintain credibility and efficacy in training delivery. Provincial bodies include the Private Career Colleges branch of the Ministry of Colleges and Universities in Ontario and the Private Training Institutions Branch of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training in British Columbia

    Advantages of Career Colleges

Career colleges stand out for their ability to offer accelerated learning paths. Unlike traditional four-year degrees, many programs at career colleges can be completed in less than two years, and often within months. This is particularly advantageous for students eager to start working and for industries experiencing skill shortages.

The curriculum at these colleges is designed to be highly practical, providing hands-on training that applies directly to job tasks. This approach not only enhances learning but also increases employability, as graduates possess the practical skills required in the workplace from day one. Additionally, these colleges frequently update their programs to reflect current market demands, particularly in fast-evolving sectors like technology and healthcare.

    Success Stories and Statistics

The efficacy of career colleges is reflected in their graduates’ success rates, with many finding employment shortly after completion of their studies. For instance, career colleges in Ontario are noted for producing a significant portion of the province’s personal support workers, a field with a high demand for skilled professionals.

A study by the Canadian Council on Social Learning found that graduates of career colleges in Ontario reported a higher employment rate three years after graduation compared to those with only a high school diploma. Similarly, a report from the British Columbia Centre for Applied Research and Innovation found that graduates of private career colleges in British Columbia had a higher labor market attachment rate relative to those with no post-secondary education

    Government Initiatives and Support

Recognizing the role of career colleges in economic and workforce development, government programs such as Better Jobs Ontario offer financial support for students pursuing training in high-demand occupations. These initiatives provide not just tuition support but also funding for books, transportation, and basic living allowances, making career education accessible to a broader audience.

For instance, the Canada-Ontario Job Grant helps connect employers with qualified workers by providing financial assistance for training costs. British Columbia also offers similar programs, such as the Employment Program of British Columbia, to help individuals upgrade their skills and gain employment.

    Challenges and Considerations

While career colleges offer numerous benefits, potential students should be aware of challenges such as the variability in program quality and market saturation for certain professions. Students need to research and select accredited institutions that are well-regarded by industry professionals.

Career colleges in Ontario and BC play a critical role in the education sector by providing accelerated educational pathways that are tightly aligned with labour market needs. For those looking to quickly transition into a new career or enhance their skills for better job opportunities, these institutions offer a valuable and effective solution. By focusing on hands-on training and practical skills, career colleges not only enhance the employability of their graduates but also address the immediate needs of today’s job market.
