  • Don’t Give Up – Inspirational People to Motivate You

Don’t Give Up – Inspirational People to Motivate You

Striving to reach one’s goals—whether it’s to land your dream job in a big corporation, complete a Master’s Degree in two years’ time, launch your own business, or pursue a passion project—takes dedication, hard work, and patience. One can’t expect that simply creating a vision board with all of your objectives will do the trick. At times, you will encounter more difficulties than what you’ve prepared yourself for, and this is where perseverance is needed the most.

If you feel this is happening with you at the moment, then you’re in good company. Some of the most successful people in the world today got there through a healthy combination of blood, sweat, and tears, so if you’re in the throes of throwing in the white flag, look into the motivators below to inspire you to keep going.

    Terry Fox

There’s no better person to start off this list than our very own Terry Fox who overcame adversity to become the hero that we respect and love today. Fox was born in Manitoba and raised in British Columbia, where he became actively involved in a variety of sports as a teenager. However, when Fox was 18 years old, he was diagnosed with bone cancer and his right leg had to be amputated right above the knee. Instead of surrendering to a life of inactivity, Fox rose above the misfortune and instead vowed to dedicate his life to raising funds for cancer research by running across Canada. Fox started his journey in St. John’s, Newfoundland in April 1980 but anyone barely noticed. However, Fox persevered and soon his run gained attention and raised a good amount of money. After 143 days of running, cancer caught up with Fox and the build-up accumulated in his lungs and he was forced to stop running. Fox eventually succumbed to the disease in June 1981. However, his legacy continues and the annual Terry Fox Run has raised over $750M for cancer research. He remains to be a big hero to many Canadians, and he has been pitched to grace the new $5 bill.

    Steve Jobs

The man who changed the face of technology forever didn’t exactly have an easy road to success. For starters, his birth parents gave him up for adoption. Academically, he wasn’t turning up an ace and eventually dropped out of college after a mere six months. He tried to pursue a variety of projects until deciding to partner with Steve Wozniak to establish Apple Computer in 1976 with the main goal of providing user-friendly personal computers to everyone. Due to internal company conflict, Jobs was forced out of his own company in 1985, but he didn’t let this stop him from his goal of achieving more. In 1997, Jobs stepped in the role of CEO at Apple once again, thus kicking off the company’s domination of the technology industry through the release of revolutionary products such as the iPod, iPhone, and MacAir.

    J.K. Rowling

Everyone knows the genius behind the phenomenal “Harry Potter” series, but not everyone knows that being successful wasn’t entirely a walk in the park for J.K. Rowling. Though she grew up surrounded by books and became a book author herself by the young age of 6, she didn’t gain recognition for her works until later on. In fact, she faced a slew of challenges on the road to success, trials that may have prompted an ordinary person to give up. She was obviously an extraordinary person and thus persevered as best as she could. To start with, she faced tribulations in her personal life, suffering abuse at the hands of her husband, whom she later divorced. She also lost her mom to multiple sclerosis and had no choice but to rely  on welfare. She didn’t stop writing and came up with a submission (which will become the Harry Potter that we all know today) to a major publishing house, which in turn rejected it. Bloomsbury Children’s Books was the publishing company who gave her the big YES and the rest is history. Now, the Harry Potter empire is worth $15B.

    Bethany Hamilton

Hamilton is living proof that you can get past a harrowing experience and achieve your goals to make a positive impact to people’s lives. As a young girl, she always wanted to be an athlete and make her mark in surfing. However, at 13 years old, Hamilton encountered a 14-foot tiger shark which resulted in her losing her left arm. While others would have given up following this horrible turn of events, Hamilton just became more motivated and went back to surfing only after a month after the attack. In two years’ time, she won her first national surfing title. Hamilton isn’t one to keep what she learned from experience to herself. She’s been happy to share her wisdom through the release of books and by being a motivational speaker.

    Oprah Winfrey

A list of the greatest motivators wouldn’t be complete without Oprah Winfrey in it. After all, those who know her story will associate this billionaire media mogul and philanthropist with the word “inspiring.” Winfrey was almost set to fail in life but her determination and dedication were too powerful to resist. Born in poverty, Winfrey experienced sexual abuse at the hands of male relatives as a young girl, an experience that would be traumatic for anyone. She didn’t let this get in the way of her ambition and desire to be an inspiration to others. Winfrey had a passion for broadcasting and won a gig to host a TV chat show in her local city of Baltimore. After eight years, Winfrey landed a job to host her own radio show in Chicago. These two jobs definitely paved the way for her long-running “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which was launched in 1986.

  • Getting Nervous About Leaving Home

    Getting Nervous About Leaving Home

You’ve definitely heard of this feeling before: homesickness. The feeling of missing home, friends and family, especially when you’ve moved away from where you grew up. It doesn’t matter how great the distance, but it’s always just enough to make you miss that comforting hug of your parents or your best friends, to miss your pets and their silly antics, or even just the look of your bedroom – carefully tailored to your interests and things that make you happy and feel secure.

Nerves always flare up in the first couple of weeks of post-secondary. It can happen during exams, too, and you start to question yourself and what you are doing there. It happens to us all and it is perfectly normal. That feeling can also be called “imposter syndrome”- the overwhelming feeling that you do not deserve to be there at all.

It doesn’t particularly help when the professors themselves say in their first year that more than half of your class won’t be in the second-year class. This doesn’t always apply to the grade “situation” (as it is different from high school), but rather, you find yourself wondering if this is what you want to do as a career – since you are paying money (through personal sources, scholarships or a student loan) for this, it’s definitely the year to reflect to see if it is what you want to do.

But back to nerves about leaving home – because of all the possible factors:  new school, new friends, new grades and pressure you put on yourself, it can be rather intimidating. So we’re here to focus on how to feel good about yourself, and your chosen path before you get into post-secondary. It’s a time of self-reflection – and it’s okay if you don’t know what you want to do. You may have a better idea after accepting a post-secondary school offer and going through the degree half-way through. (This is why I recommend talking to a school counsellor at the half-way point, to see if there are other options that you did not consider – such as changing your major to a double major since you’ve taken enough courses in the second major to qualify – this has happened to me and is the reason why I became a double major.)

What makes you feel good? You can apply that to post-secondary as well – do they have a really cool gym that you would love to use? An extensive library, with comfortable chairs where you can see yourself at home while studying or researching materials? You can even look for other items that may be a little different: clubs for activities you enjoy such as crocheting or board games, clubs to join where you can make new friends; even looking for to ensure there is a strong Internet connection, so you can contact your family and friends if you’re feeling a little down and want some support. Are there events planned that appeal to you – like a social mixer with food from other cultures?

Whatever makes you feel good, there are plenty of opportunities, and I hope you take the opportunity to find something you like. Try new things. Don’t worry about being nervous: we have all been there, and you can always tell your friends and family all about the cool experiences you’ve had and realize that you feel happy and good at the place you chose.

It’s our experiences that help shape us – and those experiences can help you with your future paths.

  • The History, Development and Popularization of Yoga in America

The History, Development and Popularization of Yoga in America

    By Maryam Sheikh

Yoga has become popular in today’s world to help attain peace and mindfulness. It has been around for thousands of years. However, this spiritual, physical, and mental practice was not always around in North America. In fact, yoga originates from India and was introduced to America in the 1800’s.

The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj” and essentially means “to unite”. Yoga, therefore, is the practice that aims to unite and connect the mind and body to achieve harmony.

A Hindu monk by the name of Swami Vivekananda is believed to have been the first person to speak about yoga in America. In 1893, he attended the World’s Parliament of Religions conference in Chicago and addressed the audience. Swami spoke about yoga as a philosophy and means of self- improvement. Later, he formed groups and taught people about the practices, later becoming known as an individual who inspired others to come from India to the States and do the same.

Yoga then gained popularity from the 1920’s through to the late 1900’s. There were schools that opened up in New York as well research centers that were created, dedicated to yoga. It was taught to the royal family, introduced to Hollywood, and had hundreds of books written about it. Some of these books include “Hatha Yoga” by Theos Bernard and “The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali”. Television series were produced, and yoga was later explored for its medicinal and therapeutic value.

As it evolved, less focus was put on the mental and spiritual aspects of yoga. In fact, yoga in America, began to focus more on physical exercises and became part of a billion- dollar industry. Currently, there are over 16 million yoga practitioners in the United States. It is interesting to think about how it developed and changed since being introduced to North America.

Over 36. 7 million Americans practice yoga, which leads to an important question- why has yoga become so popular in America? Firstly, the fast pace at which the world operates today has resulted in an increase in stress and tension in people. Therefore, more and more people are searching for ways to relieve that pressure and feel inner peace. Yoga has provided a way for people to achieve balance in their lives. It provides an excellent opportunity for people to unwind and reflect. Furthermore, it is a great form of exercise as it helps improve energy levels, promotes cardio and circulatory health, and increases flexibility in joints. As mentioned previously, there is also a spiritual aspect to yoga that is beneficial; yoga encourages compassion, respect, and kindness and can help build character. The early forms of yoga sought to incorporate breath work and other behaviour principles.

While we appreciate yoga, we must remember that it is important to respect the roots that it originated from and acknowledge its rich history. Though it has become more commercialized today, yoga has deep spiritual significance. It is a truly reflective practice that has reached many corners of the globe.

The Job/Career Benefits to Learning a Second Language

    Stay Safe as Always,

    Erin Kelly

    Content Editor

  • Can Learning a Second Language Benefit One’s Work?

Can Learning a Second Language Benefit One’s Work?

Being able to speak a second, or multiple languages can be very helpful when it comes to finding jobs. It gives the person and the company they work for the opportunity to communicate with and reach a more diverse audience. This can benefit the company and the person in many different ways.

Here are five reasons as to how learning a new language can be beneficial:

    Increased Chances of Getting Hired

Applying for a job can be very competitive. There will be many people who are applying for the same position. If the ability to speak more than one language is on a resume, it will catch the employer’s attention. That detail will differentiate the resume from the others. It is preferred by several companies to have multilingual employees. Although it is beneficial to be multilingual, it does not mean that you will be hired on the spot. It just means that the chance of getting hired is raised.

    Higher Salaries

The ability to speak a foreign language can also help receive promotions or get hired for management roles. This ability is important because it can help supervisors lead and manage teams that include workers of different ethnicities. It also provides the ability for the supervisor to easily resolve any issues that deal with cultural and language differences between employees and customers.

    Attracts Global Companies

Many people would like to work for international companies. Being able to speak different languages makes it much easier to communicate with many of those international companies. If one enjoys traveling, it will give them opportunities to travel on behalf of their company. Since a multilingual person is trusted to represent the company, it gives international companies a great first impression. This could be beneficial for one’s company, as well as the representative.

    Builds Relationships

Being multilingual allows people to be able to relate and communicate with many different cultural groups. Having a language barrier can, unfortunately, make communicating awkward and uncomfortable for both sides. Speaking to clients, and possibly coworkers, in a language they all understand breaks down any barriers and makes them feel much more comfortable.

    Helps with Language-Based Jobs

Some jobs are based on knowing more than one language. There are several job opportunities in marketing, transportation, retail, banking, education, law, tourism, and government that require one to know a second or several languages. In some of these, people are needed to translate and transcribe written work into foreign languages. It is best for those who can read, write, and speak in foreign languages.

Being able to speak, read, and/or write in more than one language can be very beneficial. This is especially beneficial if one’s country has more than one official language, such as Canada.

There are several ways one can learn a new language. There are apps, online courses, classes in school, and much more. It is not mandatory to speak more than one language but it is recommended. Learning languages can be fun and it would not hurt to learn a few basic phrases in another language!
