  • A Look into Careers that Have a Bright Future, Financially

A Look into Careers that Have a Bright Future, Financially

Last May, CBC.ca published the results of a survey which focused on companies that appeal most to students in six major field studies – business, engineering/IT, natural sciences, liberal arts/fine arts/education/social sciences, law, and health and medicine. The survey, done by employer-branding company Universum Global, revealed results that perhaps many wouldn’t find suprising. For one, technology companies such as Google, IBM, Apple, and Microsoft are among the companies which headed the list, as well as engineering companies like Tesla and Canadian Space Agency. Big banks such as TD Bank and Royal Bank of Canada also had a strong showing. These organizations are not only attractive because of their competitive compensation packages and benefits but also because of the stability and security they offer.

There’s no doubt that the engineering and IT sector, as well as banking and finance industries, are highly in demand these days, but would it be the same in ten years or so? Let’s look into the magic crystal ball and see what the outlook will be like….

Here’s a rundown of the jobs that will have solid prospects in 10 years’ time:

    Computer Systems Design Professionals

As the survey results showed, the student respondents have a good idea of what the future looks like. The IT sector will continue to thrive so Apple and these other innovative organizations will grow even more as the number of companies which depend on technological advancements to stay on top of the competitive market will increase. There will be more need for continuous upgrades and enhancements, so IT students everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief – your job will still be in high demand in the future.

    Social Workers

While social work may not be interesting to current students as IT companies such as Google, this industry has a bright future ahead of it. The need for social workers will be more significant in 10 years’ time as the aging population continue to increase. There’s also an expected growth for the youth population up to 17 years old, and more families will require social assistance for day care and other related services.

    Legal, Accounting, and Business Consultants

If you have a strong inclination for crunching numbers, growing businesses, and laying out legal groundwork, then you’ll likely acquire the highly coveted job security since these careers have a solid potential of being in high demand in the future. Mergers, acquisitions, implementation of new technologies, and others are the main reasons why these jobs will be needed in 10 years’ time.

Research and Development Professionals, Architects, and Engineers

Again, as the survey proved, engineering companies will continue to score points way into the future. There will also be a high demand for anyone involved in R&D and the architectural sectors. Construction and infrastructure projects will continue to rise, particularly in non-residential buildings, and there will be a renewed interest in manufacturing production, research and development, and monitoring and evaluation efforts.

Nurses and Occupational or Physiotherapy Assistants

This list won’t be complete if there isn’t a mention of a healthcare professional, and true enough, the demand for healthcare services will not only remain but is expected to intensify in the years to come due to the aging population and Canadians’ increased desire to keep to a healthy lifestyle.

The above are just five of the most promising careers. Now which of these industries are you looking forward to being a part of?

  • A Closer Look at a Career as a Librarian

A Closer Look at a Career as a Librarian

Have you ever noticed that whenever librarians are depicted in TV or film, typically they’re shown as stuffy professionals who rarely smile surrounded by dusty books? In real life, this is hardly the case. Librarians, especially those who are employed in public librarians, are important in establishing communities and connecting individuals to access not just reading materials, but also programs and services like newcomer services, disability services, computer classes, tax clinics, and so much more. Therefore, you’ll rarely see a librarian without a smile on their face as they welcome visitors.

If you adore reading and would like to make a difference in the community, being a librarian could be your best bet.

Librarians – What You Need to Know

We often encounter librarians at public libraries and school or university libraries, but they can also be employed by other government entities or private offices to maintain internal records and documents for references. Wherever they are employed, it is a must for librarians to be highly organized and aware of cataloguing procedures, which are done digitally most of the time now.

As a big part of their job is to interact with visitors, it also helps to have excellent interpersonal skills. They are in charge of maintaining library sections are all in place and all items for borrowing and returning are accounted for. For overdue or missing items, they may be required to do follow-ups and reminders. In public libraries, a good amount of patience is required as sometimes they will encounter unruly visitors. In this case, they take the lead in reminding them of library rules and etiquette.

    Salary

According to PayScale.com, librarians can earn $48,250 a year, and those with 10 years of experience or more can earn as much as $70,733 a year.

    Skills

Earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Sciences or similar degree is the first step to becoming a librarian. Customer service skills are a must, and these can be learned during coop placements or part-time work experience in other industries that focus on customer service, like retail and food service.

    Pros and Cons

Like with any job, a career as a librarian does have its own set of advantages and disadvantages. One common downside is the long hours that are associated with the job, where some may be required to work weekends, depending on the location of the libraries. Some may also find it a bit challenging to handle visitors who display less than ideal behavior, and in this cases, they truly have to adapt a firm and authoritative demeanor.

A pro of working as a librarian is the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people who come from different cultural backgrounds or organizational levels. This makes for an exciting work experience each day as no day is ever the same. Another reward of being a librarian is getting involved in projects that aim to improve the community. For some, this is something they look forward to because they get a chance to make an indelible mark on someone’s life.

  • Turning the Page – Great Tips to Improve Your Reading Skills

Turning the Page – Great Tips to Improve Your Reading Skills

We all know that reading is an essential part of our lives. Reading is an effective way to educate yourself about things that are unfamiliar to you. It is a helpful activity to enrich our lives. Even renowned American children’s book author and illustrator Dr. Seuss said, “The more that you read, the more things that you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” In addition, there are studies that show reading habits can lead to good mental health.

However, there are times when you probably find yourself at a loss at what exactly you’re reading about, whether it’s a chapter on your textbook, a passage on an eBook, or a story in the newspaper. As a result, reading becomes challenging and you approach it like it’s a chore. Don’t fret because this situation is perfectly normal, and there are ways around it. Like most everything else, to develop better reading skills, it takes practice, so below are tips on how to get you on the right track to feel more at home with page-turners.

    Read aloud.

It may be intimidating at first, especially if you’re not used to it, but reading aloud can definitely help you improve your reading abilities. Take it step by step. Maybe one paragraph today, two paragraphs tomorrow, and so on. The more you do this, the more you’ll feel comfortable and you’ll have better comprehension of the subject. If you want to make it more fun, pair up with a classmate or a friend to be your reading buddy and make reading both of your after-school activity. Take turns in reading a textbook or a fiction or non-fiction book you’re both interested in. Encourage each other to share their thoughts and opinions of what they’ve just read and get a discussion going about the subject.

List down words or phrases that you don’t know.

No one is born knowing every word that exists in the dictionary. We’ve all had our fair share of reading something and coming across a word we haven’t encountered before. If this happens to you, an effective trick is to list them down and look up their meanings. This way, you get a better understanding of the context of what you’re reading, and what’s more, you expand your vocabulary. Of course, lugging a thick dictionary on a daily basis can be a hassle, so the best solution is to have a dictionary app on your smart phones. Both Oxford and Merriam-Webster have free apps available for download which makes looking up a word much more convenient and quicker.

List down questions you have about something you’ve read.

This is somehow related to the previous one, but more for understanding the overall theme or message of what you’ve read. There are texts we come across that we grapple the point of, and it’s a typical scenario. Seek clarification from your teacher or instructor about these questions, but if they’re not available, ask your peers or someone on a higher level. Gathering information from someone else’s perspective will truly help you grasp the ideas that the author wanted to convey. If possible, you can even start a group study platform to further discuss the text.

Pick up something you like to read.

It is admirable if you make an effort to improve your reading skills by turning to the usual suspects—your textbooks! Doing so can propel your success in your academic subjects. But remember, reading doesn’t have to be serious all the time. Give yourself a break once in a while, and pick up a book that you’re genuinely curious about, whether it’s an adventure, romance, mystery, thriller, or non-fiction. Don’t confine your entire reading time to just textbooks, so you can truly discover the pleasure of reading.

  • Jobs that Pay Off the Most Right Now

Jobs that Pay Off the Most Right Now

It’s back to school season once again, and if you’re heading closer to your last years in college or university, chances are, you’re feeling an overwhelming sense of anticipation of what lies ahead.  One important thing to know is that launching a career is easier said than done. Sure, you might have explored the possibilities of coops or placements, and you believe you have a strong shot at landing a job even before completing your college or university studies, but don’t be discouraged if things don’t fall into place as expected. As you know, there are several factors that can affect how you carve your career path, and one of the main components is how in demand or not one’s intended profession is.

Below is a quick look at those jobs that truly take off and pay off at the moment:

    Statistician or Actuary

It’s all about big data these days, and it’s understandable why there’s a growing demand for professionals who can interpret the big data and use it to provide solutions, build innovations, and hone in on consumer behaviour. Suffice it is to say, a graduate degree in math or statistics is a step in the right direction for this field, which has grown 87% in the last five years. You’ll potentially earn as much as $87,000 in this industry.

    Scientific Research Manager

If you have a knack for looking at things from a scientific perspective, then the career of scientific research manager could be a great fit for you. In this job, you’ll be responsible for supervising the technical work of architectural firms, statistical services, or a scientific department. You’ll also be tasked to provide plans and directions for the technical work and make recommendations for areas of improvement. Scientific A Master’s or doctoral degree in science is what you’ll need to kick things off, plus of course years of experience. Once you’re in that level, you’ll earn a median salary of $102,000.

    Utilities Manager

Without these professionals, we would be without the essentials for living like water, electrical power, and natural gas. This field is such a necessity in both the public and private sectors that utility managers are one of the jobs that are most in demand now. To earn the title of utilities manager and perform duties like supervising facilities that bring power to residential and commercial spaces, you will need to complete an electrical engineering degree that focuses on utilities, gas, and oil. An average of $114,000 is what awaits you once you complete all the requirements and gain experience. This field is expected to grow even more in the next few years.

    Dentist

Oral health is just as important as physical health, and this is why dental industry is a burgeoning one, growing 63% in the last five years. It’s a longer than usual journey as you will first need four years of pre-industry studies then a university degree from an accredited dental program. Afterwards, you have to earn your license to practice by a provincial or territorial regulatory body, but everything is worth it in the end. Dentists can earn as much as $$93,600 on average.

    Nurse Practitioner

Perhaps the most assured industry out of all of them to launch your career is the healthcare industry. Healthcare professionals like nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and midwives are continuously in demand to provide a variety of services, growing 75% in the last five years. This is especially true as the aging population in Canada continues to grow. To be a nurse practitioner, you’ll require a Master’s degree in nursing, while physician assistants and midwives need to complete university degrees in related programs. All three may also need to register with a regulatory body. The median salary for professionals in this field are $104,000.

Now that you have an idea of the highest paying jobs right now, consider how you can fit into the picture and earn you the highest potential.

  • Career Profile: Set and Exhibit Designers

Career Profile: Set and Exhibit Designers

Imagine going to a museum where the exhibits were lying on the ground or seeing a play in a plain room with no background. It might not look very good. People who work in set and exhibit design help to create interesting sights for people to see.

A few years ago, an exhibit on the sinking of the Titanic went around different cities in Canada. In each place, people had to decide where to put each object, such as dishes that passengers ate from or belongings they had with them on the trip. When the exhibit moved from one place to another, designers had to decide how to display the various pieces in whatever space is available.

Museums are common places for exhibit designers, but they can also work in art galleries, trade shows, and other locations. Flexibility and creativity help people in this job to find ways to draw attention to the important part of each display. Having a good sense of history and art can help people work well in this job. Consulting the museum curators and others involved with the project will help designers understand what they want people to see and understand about the display.

A related place to find work is in set design in theatres. When people put on plays, they often want the stage to have realistic look of a house, school, or other place. Set designers find ways to make the stage look right. They need to talk with the directors of the play to see what they want and how to build it.

Set and exhibit designers can learn their work on the job, but getting official training also helps. Many employers want designers to have a bachelor’s degree in a field related to the job. A set designer, for example, might want to get an education in theatre. Someone wanting to work in a museum might get a degree in archaeology or history. Designers often also need to supervise other employees or volunteers, and courses in management can help.

Being able to imagine what a set or exhibit will look like is a very useful talent for people in this field. If you can draw, you can also help other people see what you want and possibly make suggestions. Often, flexibility is important in this job when plans go wrong or when something unexpected comes up. Keeping good records is also important, since no one wants to lose a museum piece or to forget something important on a theatre set.

Most large cities have at least one or two museums and a few theatres where people in this field can find work. Even smaller villages and towns might have possibilities. In general, however, job possibilities tend to be limited. Learning another skill is a good idea, just in case fulltime work is hard to find.

Salaries for people working in set and exhibit design start at about $30,000 per year and can rise to $74,000 with experience. The work can be busy but interesting, and this career might be right for you.

  • Saying Goodbye in June

    Saying Goodbye in June

Every year, you begin to say goodbye to people, places and things in school. It may be your last year in high school, or even elementary school. One thing is for sure; it is hard to say goodbye. If you are moving on to post-secondary education, you might be moving far away from friends and family. This is tough and it will take you some time to adjust. On the bright side, you have the summer to mentally prepare yourself for those adjustments. You can make your summer as busy as you can with work, volunteering and friends, but don’t forget to take some time out to meditate on your future endeavours. Do you remember the old line from the movie Field of Dreams, “If you build it, they will come”? It is still a great quote when you relate it to building a positive future for yourself that will equate to a healthy and fulfilled life. Quite simply, if you work hard, you will reap the benefits- even if you fall on your face a few times in between. Saying goodbye will be hard at first, but you have a lot to look forward to that will only make your life richer with experience!

For our last issue before summer break, we have quite a few Op-Ed pieces that talk about experiences in Co-op Education. Hopefully, after reading these pieces, you will have some insight on what a co-op course can do for your education and future job/career choices.

We also have articles on: STEM organizations, Trade career profiles, why it is important to attend events concerning disability rights, how Trade unions work, monthly scholarships and more.

A special thanks to all our new student writers that contributed this year; you have ultimately made the site richer with great content. Enjoy your summer and we cannot wait to read what you have in store for us in the new school year!

  • Career Profile: Stone Cutters and Carvers

Career Profile: Stone Cutters and Carvers

In 2014, stone cutters and carvers in Ontario went to work at restoring a section of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Not everyone in this trade gets to work on such important projects, but becoming a stone cutter and carver can be a good choice for people who like to work with their hands and often be creative.

Stone cutters and carvers work mainly on buildings with marble, stone, brick, and other hard surfaces. Sometimes, people in this field might design the patterns themselves, or they might follow a preset pattern to make flowers, pictures, and more. Some designs are very simple, but others can be complicated.

Often, people in this field first draw the outlines of a design on the stone or other materials, and the stone cutters and carvers use power tools to shape the stone or other materials to make it look beautiful and interesting. Cutters use sandblasters for larger surfaces, but tools like that are not always useful. In some cases, like at the Parliament Buildings, stone cutters and carvers use hand tools for very delicate work. They also need to be able to work with mortar and other materials that join stones and bricks together.

People who work as stone cutters and carvers generally need a high school education, and no certification is required in Canada. Many employers require people to have two years of experience. Many people learn the work on the job. Another way to learn about this trade is to take courses at Algonquin College in Ottawa, the only place in Canada that offers courses in the field.

The trade of stone cutting and carving started to die out soon after the Parliament Buildings were first built in the 1860s. However, the number of jobs are beginning to increase again. These days, job prospects are not as good as they once were, but opportunities are available, especially in larger cities. Because it is a rare skill these days, you might not have as much competition for jobs as in other trades.

People in this field need to be strong enough to lift heavy slabs of stone if necessary. They need to stand, bend, and kneel down to do their work. These tradespeople should also be able to listen to instructions and carry them out. Good reading skills are also important since stone cutters and carvers need to be able to follow directions and to keep records of what they have done. Patience and an ability to work on very delicate tasks can help people in this field. Dealing with dust and dirt is part of the job.

Like many trades, the job of stone cutter and carver can be a fairly solitary job, but it also requires skills in working with people. In small businesses, these tradespeople have to be able to deal with customers and be able to deal with invoices, ordering supplies, and other tasks for keeping the business going.

Specializing in a particular design or kind of carving can help. For example, working with tombstones can be a good option for people who are interested in steady employment. A career in stone cutting and carving can be a good choice for people who enjoy creating beautiful designs that last for years.

  • Career Profile: Surveyors

    Career Profile: Surveyors

If you ride or walk down city streets often enough, you’re likely to see people looking through yellow machines that look a bit like cameras. These people are surveyors, who help determine property boundaries, elevations, and other features important to builders and others who need the information.

Surveyors gather information about the land to help deal with questions that people might have about land ownership or its suitability for building. To do this, they take measurements using special instruments and then put the information onto maps and sketches and report on what they have found. They calculate height, depth, and whatever people need to know. Having good mathematical skills is important for this job.

Being a good organizer is important in this career when surveyors plan and direct projects. Often, surveyors work for the government to check property lines and to solve problems that people might have. Suppose that two neighbours had a question about where one person’s property ended and the other began. A surveyor could find the answer. If government officials need information on an area intended for a park or other public area, the work of a surveyor can help them find what they want. Knowing what different clients need can help surveyors find jobs.

Working as a surveyor involves some outdoor work but also office work to record the information and make calculations. Generally, the work is not physically difficult, but it can be tiring to stand for long periods of time or to sit at a desk for hours. Surveyors often have to work with other people, but they should also be able to work alone. Sometimes surveyors have to work long hours, but at other times, they can count on fairly regular hours.

Requirements for surveyors vary from one employer to another, but in general people need either a four-year bachelor’s degree from a university or a two-year diploma in geomatics from a community college. In most areas of Canada, land surveyors need a license from the Association of Canadian Land Surveyors. Local employers might also have special requirements, and it is a good idea to talk with people who can give good advice on what courses to take.

If this job sounds interesting, you can already begin to prepare for work in this field. Mathematics and computer courses are useful to take in high school, and skills in measuring and calculating are also good for preparing people for work as surveyors. Sometimes, surveyors advise other people on legal issues related to property. In that case, some knowledge of the law is useful.

Salaries for surveyors vary in different parts of Canada, with the highest wages currently in Calgary and the lowest in Ontario. The most common wages for land surveyors are between $50,000 and $75,000, but most surveyors in Canada earn between $26,000 and $66,000. For experienced surveyors, salaries can rise as high as $114,000 per year.

If you are a careful and precise worker and would like to help governments and others keep accurate records, the job of surveyor might be right for you.

  • I Want to Work for Myself: How to Start a Business at a Young Age

I Want to Work for Myself: How to Start a Business at a Young Age

You might not like the idea of sitting in a cubicle from nine to five, typing away at investment reports or calling back a list of customers to ask them if they’re ‘happy with their service’ (ugh). How great would it be if you could be your own boss? It would probably be fantastic, you might think. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows and it requires a lot of hard work – especially if you want to start this business at a young age. It’s not impossible though, you can definitely do it if you use the right tools and plan the right way. It all starts with a good idea.

Do your research and Draft a Business Plan

The business plan is arguably the most important part of beginning your business. This plan will draft what your business is, the product or service it offers, and how you plan to grow your business. It also looks at an analysis of the market you’re working in (whether it’s a baking company, a computer repair service, etc.), funding plans, and financial projections. This is why you need to do a lot of research while drafting your plan, create a focus for the plan and for your business. Investors are going to ask about your business plan, so you’ll want to make this your strong first step forward that documents every aspect of your business with great detail. Try to anticipate pitfalls and investor questions and include the solutions and answers into your plan. Since your customer base may change over the next five years, ten years, etc., your business plan should be adaptable and try to anticipate these possible changes.

    Secure Funding for your Business

Now that you have your business plan in place, you need to get a couple sources of funding to get it off of the ground. Upfront costs of starting a business can be pretty steep, depending what market you’re trying to break into. Luckily, you have quite a few options in the start-up-loving world of business. You can persuade investors to purchase a stake in your company or fund your startup costs (if investors see that you have a solid business plan with a thought-out exit strategy, then they will be more likely to invest in your business). You can also rely on a small business loan which is offered across Canada. These are funds you will have to pay back, however, so it’s not a good idea to think of it as ‘free money’. If you have a good idea that would be of interest to the general public, crowd-funding may be a good option to help get your business off of the ground.

Get All of the Necessary Paperwork

Depending on which kind of business you’re looking to break into, you will need certain licenses and permits. Do research in your respective industry and make sure that you’re operating legally and have all of the paperwork necessary. Register your small business within the province you plan to operate in and make sure that everything checks out.

    Promote your business

We live in a time where connecting with your customer base has never been easier. Establish a client base and then keep growing with promotion, promotion, promotion. This means getting a logo together, advertising in different content streams, etc. Make sure that your business is reaching out to the right people and that you’re getting your name out there.

After you complete these steps, the rest is trial and error. Operate leanly on a modest budget and assess what your client base will be. Once you get going, begin expanding your business and trying different things to stay relevant.
