  • A Closer Look at a Career as a Multimedia Artist

A Closer Look at a Career as a Multimedia Artist

When someone says the word “artist” to you, the image that may come into your mind is someone with a palette, easel, and a whole bunch of watercolours. Even when you go to an art gallery or a museum, the works of art showcased are most likely to be paintings or murals. It may not enter your mind that art can be created in other ways too—not just the standards palette, easel, and colours.

These artists may not use traditional tools that we are familiar with but they are equally creative and talented. These professionals are known as multimedia artists, and though you may not be as be familiar with their job title, you are likely to be familiar with their work especially if you watch a lot of TV or film. And like the great artists that we all admire, their work can also create a lasting impact on those who witness it.

If you’ve always been inclined to aesthetics and are passionate about digital technology, a multimedia artist can lead to a truly rewarding career. Let’s get to know more about this below.

Multimedia Artists – What You Need to Know

A multimedia artist utilize technology to create art specifically graphics, animation, special effects, and other visual images that are meant for not just film or TV, but the internet, video games, and other forms of media as well. The amount of work they have to do usually depends on the industry they are in. For instance, an animated TV commercial may not require a lot of work compared to a full-length animated feature film.

Nevertheless, any type of work as a multimedia artist entails 100% focus and commitment, as any slight misstep can be a costly one as they will be asked to do a do-over of the work they have done.

Multimedia artists can work for a wide variety of industries, including advertising agencies or TV or film production companies. They can work under the supervision of an art director or individually and collaborate with other artists and animators.

    Salary

According to PayScale.com, multimedia artists can earn C$33,000 – C$77,000a year with additional potential earnings for bonus and profit sharing.

    Skills

As multimedia artists are essentially artists too, they are expected to have a good sense of art and design aesthetics. In addition, they have expert knowledge in how to make visual images capture light, texture, shadow, and colour appropriately for the target medium and audience. Lastly and most importantly, a multimedia artist should have expert-level competence of graphics-based computer programs, including ones centred on three-dimensional design. As computer software is an ever-evolving industry, it pays to have the strong capacity to learn new software and technology quickly as well as they will need to continuously know how to improve their skills and expand their techniques.

Apart from technical proficiency, succeeding as a multimedia artist requires an arsenal of strengths. Communication skills and time management abilities are also important since they are asked to present their vision or concept for their work and therefore must know how to explain it clearly. In addition, they work under strict timelines whether they are a part of a commercial, film, or TV program, or any other project.

Earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Computer Graphics, or Animation is a good way to kick off a career as a multimedia artist. Some of the most popular educational institutions to earn these degrees are the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, BC, the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in Toronto, ON, and Sheridan College in Oakville, ON. The latter, in fact, is the alma mater of Domee Shi, whose film “Bao” won Best Animated Short Film at this year’s Oscars.

    Pros and Cons

Like with any job, a career as a multimedia artist comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. One common downside is the long hours that are associated with the job, where some may be required to work evenings and weekends, depending on deadlines provided. Some feel that the ever-changing technology can be a bane too as it can be a challenge to constantly keep up with the trends where the graphics software or applications can easily become obscure just in a few years’ time.

A pro of working as a multimedia artist though is the opportunity to meet a variety of people, and encountering a wide variation of projects that appeal to the mainstream audience such as animated short films that are lead-ins in high-profile and much-awaited movies such as “The Incredibles 2.” Some are also grateful for the travel opportunities that come with the job.

  • Power to the Trades People: How Unions Make a Difference

Power to the Trades People: How Unions Make a Difference

Work in the trades can be demanding and dangerous. The hours, physical labour, and work conditions can be very taxing on the human body. Trade unions play a vital role in addressing problems in trades jobs and ensuring there are proper wages, safe environments, and the enforcement of legal rights. These organizations are based on membership and act independently in order to negotiate on behalf of trades people. They have had a huge impact on trades professions, and will continue to do so for a long time to come.

Trade unions provide a voice for workers. A single trades person might be too nervous to express concerns regarding the workplace. They could struggle to get any traction if they tried to fix a problem on their own. Members of a union, on the other hand, elect a representative to talk to management on behalf of all the workers. This allows for negotiations referred to as “collective bargaining.” As new employees join that workplace, they are encouraged to join their respective union. Each member pays a financial contribution towards the union to keep it going, and that money goes a long way.

Before unions came along, it was common for trades people to work 12 hours a day, and even seven days per week. Children were made to work at factories and placed in dangerous situations. Unions have allowed for tremendous progress, but there are still major issues to address in the modern era. Many employers utilize tactics such as part-time work to avoid providing benefits, hiring foreign workers to pay them less, and internships to avoid paying people at all. Unions are a powerful tool in challenging these corrupt practices

By fighting for equality and challenging discriminatory practices, unions also help workers with their emotional and mental well-being. Management and employees are less likely to waste time arguing, and staff retention will be high. Trades people are more likely to put in a better effort when they feel appreciated and cared for. This is not only for their benefit, but the benefit of the entire organization.

Beyond working conditions, unions also play a role in developing training programs for workers. This improves the efficiency of the company and ultimately benefits the employers. Unions often have a reputation for the opposite effect. In extreme cases, unions can organize strikes when an agreement cannot be reached. However, about 95% of labour agreements are negotiated without resorting to a strike. Workers only strike when the issues matter enough that they are willing to forego a regular paycheck and start picketing. This is a powerful asset provided to workers through unions to ensure they are not taken advantage of.

A trade union acts as a singular force on the behalf of every worker. By paying their dues and actively engaging with their union, trades people are giving themselves a powerful voice against corruptive policies and abusive practices. This leads to greater efficiency and improved output, which in turn boosts related industries and the economy as a whole. Ultimately, we all benefit from the valiant efforts of trade unions. They are an undeniable example of the power and influence we all can have regardless of our position. We are stronger when working together.

  • Attending Events to Transform the World for Those with Disabilities

Attending Events to Transform the World for Those with Disabilities

The world has never been so big… or this small. Billions of people are connected through ever-evolving technologies. We have the potential to make new friends and embark on different experiences using nothing more than our smartphone. One of the groups to benefit from this are people with disabilities. Assistant devices have opened up the world for many, along with buildings taking accessibility more and more into account. Yet through all this, many people still hold onto stereotypes and prejudices towards disabled individuals. Given how far technology has come in all ways of life, there should be far greater inclusivity than what we have. That is why it is so important for you to get involved and help make a difference.

Change is necessary. The 2017 Canadian Survey on Disability concluded that 6.2 million Canadians aged 15 or more have had their day-to-day life hindered by disability. That is one in five of us. Of working-age adults with more severe disabilities, an entire one-third live in poverty. Disability awareness is essential in helping this group rise up and fulfill their potential. There are many ways to go about this, and numerous means to do so in the modern age.

Awareness is critical. One major way that we have always been able to help one another and connect with people is through events. Live events get us away from our screens for in-person experiences that build a greater sense of community. Look for events and activities that occur around awareness days and months. March is Epilepsy Awareness Month. September 7 is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Day. October 10 is World Mental Health Day. These are just a few of the countless examples of days, weeks, and months recognized by Canada and other countries all around the globe. By seeking out events associated with them, you can meet new people and become more aware of what those with disabilities endure. By taking that time to delve into that one particular disability, you will walk away wiser and ready to be an ally for those who live with it on a daily basis.

Education is essential. Events can help you learn things you never knew about a particular condition. By knowing what has to be done for people with disabilities, you can take action to accomplish the changes that will matter most. Music festivals have been able to accommodate deaf and hard-of-hearing attendees through ASL interpreters. Theatre shows with sensory-friendly performances open up the word of the arts to those afflicted with autism. Music, dance, and improve programs have been honed to help people with dementia live more fulfilling lives. By participating in events that concern disabilities, you will learn about the best causes to support, the most progressive politicians to vote for, and even initiatives you can do on your own.

We all have the potential to make a difference for the millions of people living with disabilities. By attending events for different conditions, we gain the awareness to know what needs to be done and the education to know how to go about it. Start by researching the different days, weeks, and months for various disabilities. Then check out their corresponding events in your area. We have the technology. Smart devices can bring us together and start amazing things. When we bolster that technology through events and broadening our knowledge, we equip ourselves with the tools needed to change the world for those who need it most.

  • The Use of Technology in Our Daily Lives

The Use of Technology in Our Daily Lives

The use of technology can be a very controversial topic. Some people do not believe that it does any good in our daily lives, while others believe that with new technology, we are able to do things that people would not have dreamed of doing today. Although it can be agreed that some advances in tech could have negative outcomes, it is not harmful to use it to help out with daily tasks.

For example, the existence of technology has helped us with the following:

    Business

    • The use of technology makes it easy for people to work from home. Not everyone is able to go out and travel to their jobs every day and working from home makes it easy. People can start their businesses and promote them online.

    Communication

    • Today technology makes communication simple. Having a conversation with people who are oceans away can happen as quickly as it would be as if having a conversation with someone who is sitting next to you. There are many options, such as texting, calling, video chatting, and sending audio recordings.

    Data Collection and Analysis

    • Collecting, analyzing and transmitting data is very simple and quick when using today’s technology. From the calendar app to the Dropbox app, a lot could be done and many documents can be shared from one person to another in a matter of seconds.

    Education

    • Learning new things in two minutes has never been easier! With all the videos and explanations online, learning can be very simple and quick. Students can also use technology to further understand any concepts that they have learned at school. Not only that but now there are classes online that students may take. With the variety of ways to educate oneself, it really helps students and people learn in ways that suit them the best.

    Fixing Issues

    • If there is a problem it is not difficult to search online to find a solution. For example, if one is trying to build something and they just cannot get it right, they can simply find a tutorial, solutions or tips online helping them complete their project much quicker and more effectively.

    Healthcare

    • Technology is used very often in hospitals and clinics today. It helps healthcare providers with several jobs such as assessing to recording their patients’ health. There are some situations where patients and doctors can communicate face to face if there are any barriers that may keep them from meeting in person.

    Reducing Garbage

    • Instead of having assignments printed on paper, assignments can be written on word documents online and submitted through one’s email. Also, as a substitute for having images on paper, you can have them in albums online to view whenever and wherever you’d like. The use of technology helps us save trees!

Technology is not as bad as people make it seem. If technology is used efficiently, it can help reduce stress and complete tasks in a short amount of time. Technology can be addictive, therefore when using technology, it is important to limit the time spent on it and set aside time for oneself and those in their lives.

  • How You Can Help People Save Money as a Personal Advisor

How You Can Help People Save Money as a Personal Advisor

If you have a passion for numbers and for helping people, then there may not be a better career for you than that of a personal advisor. Personal financial advisors are tasked to meet with clients to discuss their personal finances, investment strategies, and otherwise how to manage inflowing and outflowing cash to maintain their client’s financial health and to grow wealth and savings at the same time. They also look into other factors that could impact their clients’ financials like tax status and insurance coverage.

What are the perks of the job?

There are a few perks to this career, such as the stable workplace hours and a career in a field that is often in-demand. Banks and financial institutions are often looking for talent to expand their business and engage with a new client base. If you establish trust with your clients, you can also maintain business with the same group for years. Stability is one major perk, but another decent benefit is the job satisfaction you will receive if you are truly passionate about finance and helping others meet their financial goals. It is also very noble to promote financial literacy amongst people who might not have been effectively taught how to budget and how to save.

What are some of the setbacks?

One setback is the modest median salary that this career can bring in, which is $44,457 (according to PayScale). This comes below the Canadian national average salary of $51,000 (according to Workopolis). However, there are companies that may pay above the national average or provide opportunities for promotion if you perform well in your career. Mid- and late-career advisors can find themselves earning a salary above the national average.

How can I grow with this career?

A personal financial advisor grows their client list and experience through the years that they work in different firms. After years of practice, a personal advisor can grow into more senior advisor roles which can earn them a higher salary and prestige.

That’s all great, but could I be hired for other careers?

Having a strong understanding of finance and being good with people and customer service are two great qualities that will help you succeed in other financial fields. A few other related careers include: account manager, careers in investment, other careers in personal finance, as well as many other wealth or asset management roles. With your knowledge of financial planning and serving the needs of others, you are already in a good position to start your own business than most other people as well.

  • Consider a Career in the Corporate World as a Financial Analyst

Consider a Career in the Corporate World as a Financial Analyst

Not everyone has a passion for numbers and calculating formulas, but if you are one of these rare people that constantly have numbers on your mind, then you should pursue a career that reflects this passion. Pursuing a career as a financial analyst can fully support this vocation and can branch out into many different options moving forward. The job of a financial analyst is to do just that: analyze finances. This means that their day-to-day tasks usually entail: scrutinizing financial models and reporting on the status by analyzing results and forecasts; using business data to determine the cost of operations and the inflows of currency; and all-around using data to form business strategies and forecast future finances in a company or portfolio.

What are the perks of the job?

The biggest perk from pursuing this career is the $57,969 salary (according to PayScale), which stands above the national average of $51,000 reported in 2017. If you have a passion for numbers, then the perks virtually demonstrate themselves. Companies in the financial field also often tend to offer more perks than companies in other fields, such as covering the costs of dinners if employees work past certain hours and holding more employee-engaging events like parties and conferences.

What are some of the setbacks?

However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Being a financial analyst offers a stable nine-to-five workday, though many analysts often have to work long hours and even weekends to make sure that all of their work is done properly. But putting in the long hours usually doesn’t go unnoticed and if you work for a good company, they will likely reward you with a bonus, a significant pay raise, or a promotion. Another disadvantage to this career is that it can often be very stressful to meet deadlines and work with multiple clients on multiple deals. Essentially, the work of a financial analyst is never done.

How can I grow with this career?

The career of a financial analyst can be a pretty linear one, largely having you start off as a junior financial analyst before you are promoted to a senior financial analyst and managing director, team leader, vice president, president, etc. It largely depends on the hierarchy established by the company you end up working for, but it essentially promotes you into further roles where you take on more responsibility and can enjoy a higher salary.

That’s all great, but could I be hired for other careers?

Having a thorough understanding of finances and how they interact with corporate and business strategies can prepare you for a wealth of other career options, like being an investment banker, financial advisor, asset manager, equity research, corporate finance, risk management and commercial banking. This same understanding of finance can also equip you with the skills to begin your own business if you have a great idea and the drive to follow through on this pursuit.

    Do More in May

April showers bring May flowers? That has been the saying for many years. However, the weather everywhere has been a bit out of sync. There has been snow all over the west coast of Canada, major flooding in Northern Ontario, and below seasonal temperatures in many provinces across the country. There are always cyclical patterns in weather, but with all the stirring talk about climate change lately, people are beginning to connect the dots to some of this abnormal weather. Have you taken part in any climate protests lately? How do you feel about the environment these days? It is an important subject that affects us all- how will you choose to help the environment? With only a couple months left to go before summer break, you might be scrambling to get your 40 hours of volunteer service completed- why not try helping an environmental organization? The options are limitless!
