  • Fall Foliage

    Fall Foliage

There are many signs that fall has arrived; the start of school, colder-shorter days, and the first frost on car windshields. These signs are dreaded by students and adults alike, as they symbolize the coming of winter.

But there’s one tell tale sign fall is here that never fails to amaze and delight. This phenomenon is called autumn leaf color, and takes place when the “normally green leaves of deciduous trees and shrubs” turn a variety of different colors from red to yellow during the autumn season.

A lot of people think the changing of leaf colors is called fall foliage. However, this term refers to the viewing of the autumn leaf colors.
There are a few regions of the world that are home to the most brightly colored autumn leaves: most of the Southern Mainland of Canada, most of the Eastern part of the United States, Scandinavia, Northern and Western Europe, the Caucasus region near the Black Sea, Russia and Eastern Asia (including Eastern China, Korea and Japan).

The most famous area for viewing autumn leaves is Eastern Canada and New England. In these areas the best time to view the leaves is mid-October to early November.

The Fundy Coastal Drive in New Brunswick is an especially brilliant spot. The drive follows the Bay of Fundy which is home to some of the highest tides in the world. The leaves change from “vivacious reds to deep pumpkin orange.” The tree varieties and colors found on the Fundy Coastal Drive are similar to New England, yet the New Brunswick area is far less crowded with tourists.

Wherever they are viewed, one thing is for certain – taking time to enjoy fall foliage will definitely increase your enjoyment of the season.

Quick Facts about Autumn Leaf Colors:
    – A green leaf is green because of the presence of a pigment known as chlorophyll.
    – In autumn, chlorophyll is replaced at a slower rate than it is being used. Therefore, the supply of chlorophyll is decreasing.
    – When the leaves change color, the other pigments (which have always been present) begin to show through. These are called carotenoids and give the leaves yellow, brown and orange colors.
    – Carotenoids are common in many things, such as carrots, corn, canaries, daffodils, egg yolks and bananas.
    – The hardwood species that change leaf colors are hickory, ash, maple, yellow poplar, aspen, birch, black cherry, sycamore, cotton wood, sassafras and alder.
    – The red and purple colors come from another pigment called anthocyanins. These are not present in the leaf all along, but instead become actually produced toward the end of summer.
    – These pigments are common in fruits such as cranberries, red apples, blue berries, cherries, strawberries and plums.
    – They are common in maple trees, oaks, sourwood, sweet gums, dogwoods and cherry trees.
    – When the two pigments, anthocyanins and carotenoids, are combined they create colors like deep orange, fiery red and bronze.

  • Volunteering: Why Paying It Forward Matters

Volunteering: Why Paying It Forward Matters

Your parents may be early birds and have already put the holiday tree out. Before long it’ll be the New Year, which is all about leaving the past behind and looking forward to the future. Now is a great time to start considering paying it forward through volunteer work.

With your schedule almost full to the brim with academic-related activities, as well as extra-curricular ones, it may be daunting to think about setting aside time to lend a hand to those in need. However, helping out less fortunate individuals offers rewards that no high grades and soccer match trophy can equal. Let us take a look at the benefits you can reap through volunteer work.

It helps you take up a cause.

You’re probably thinking you’re too young to worry about the serious stuff, but with so much happening in the world these days, that is enough to give you all the more reason for kids to get involved and help out in the best way you can. Do a self-examination and ask yourself, which aspect in today’s current events would you most like to see change or improve? Most likely, there are certain issues or subjects that you feel strongly about like the environment, homelessness, literacy, arts, sports, and others. Getting involved in volunteering activities for organizations that support these causes will put you on the right track.

It helps you bring insight to society.

These days when “fake news” can easily spread from one social networking site to another, it’s easy for others to fall prey to false information to certain causes like climate change being a hoax and others. Volunteering with organizations helps you become an instrument to spread the true word so other people are well-informed, not misinformed. It is a big responsibility indeed, but at the same time, you’ll feel fulfilled knowing that you are bringing awareness and therefore contributing insight to society.

    It helps you become sociable.

If you’re the introverted type and get extremely shy and timid around people, volunteering can help you come out of your shell. You get to meet new people and socialize with them during volunteering activities. Even something as simple as putting up posters for your organization’s fundraising activity with your peers can turn you into a chatterbox. Because you know that you’re helping out for a cause that you’re passionate about, you become less conscious of yourself and focus more on raising awareness for your organization’s cause, therefore taking away the shyness. Once you set your mind more and more on the cause you’re supporting, your social anxiety will decrease less and less.

It helps you connect with like-minded people.

OK so maybe you’re the extrovert type and there’s never a party that you’re not invited to. However, let’s face it. While you may get along fine with your friends and classmates and you’re most likely to be Mr. or Ms. Popular on your school yearbook, you’ve got to admit that you’re finding yourself in the rut hanging out with the same people over and over again and talking about the same topics over and over again. You love “Riverdale,” but there’s got to be more in life than Netflix series, right? Joining a volunteer group can once again bring excitement to you since you get to meet people of all ages and spend a worthwhile time discussing about worthy causes.

It helps you prepare for your future career.

Of course, you still have years and years to get ready before you can join the workforce, but it’s never too early to have a good start. When you get involved in volunteering, you get a chance to develop skills that will help you become an efficient employee or an effective leader, such as collaboration and leadership. This way, when it’s time for you to start your career, you’re already well-prepared for it. In addition, having a volunteer experience in your resume can score you big points with the employers.

So now that you’ve gone through the pros of volunteer work, are you now more excited to explore volunteer opportunities within your community? Good luck!

  • Pay It Forward with Kindness

    Pay It Forward with Kindness

I recently heard about someone in a Tim Horton’s drive-thru paying for the coffee of the driver behind them. I thought it was such a nice thing to do for a complete stranger. I also couldn’t help but think about how great it would be if more people did kind things for others without expectations of owing them back.

Couldn’t our society use a couple more acts of kindness? It all starts with one person, and that person could be you. Small acts of kindness can make a huge difference, even if it may seem like they aren’t. Something as simple as smiling at someone accompanied by a good morning greeting can really make someone’s day.

On a larger scale, volunteering for different charitable causes can contribute to a larger issue. Many organizations rely on volunteers to bring about social change. You will be helping others who really need it and doing it out of the goodness of your heart.

Paying it forward with kindness is a wonderful, selfless thing to do. It doesn’t have to require any money and doesn’t have to take a lot of time. There is no reward greater than doing nice things for others and making others happy. Although the reward isn’t in the form of money or recognition, the way you will feel about yourself after you pay it forward with kindness will be a reward in it itself. The key to paying it forward is that it comes from a genuine and sincere place within you. You should want to do kind things for others not because you think you will get something out of it, but for the betterment of the other person.

The last time somebody held the door open for you, you probably felt gratitude. Maybe you made sure to hold the door open for the person that was behind you. Even a small gesture of kindness can make you feel great and make the world seem like a better place. Often kindness works in a chain reaction effect. It can start with one person doing something kind for another person and then that person wanting do to something kind for another, and so on and so forth. It can be almost infectious, in a good way.

Doing kind things for others can also help strengthen the community. It allows you to connect with another person even if only for a short period of time. It brings people closer together and allows them to co-operate. People begin to act as a support system to one another and look out for each other’s best interests. So, today, why not try paying it forward and doing something kind for someone else? I guarantee that you will feel awesome after!

  • Success and Your Mindset – How To Achieve Goals, Keep Learning, And Stay Positive In Your Self Talk

Success and Your Mindset – How To Achieve Goals, Keep Learning, And Stay Positive In Your Self Talk

Writing down your goals is crucial. Keep a notebook where you can write down exactly what you want to achieve. This has been tested and measured for more than seventy-five years, and it is shown that people who actually spend the time to write down their goals are much more likely to achieve them. When you write down your goals it is like giving yourself an internal challenge. Your mind will now go after those goals with tenacity.

Your mindset refers to the way you think and talk to yourself throughout the day. Are you using positive and encouraging self talk? It is amazing how many people put themselves down and talk themselves out of accomplishing their goals. When you find yourself thinking that you can’t do something or that someone else is smarter or better than you are, stop it immediately. You can sabotage your success more than someone else can. You have complete control over the way you talk to yourself, so be positive and encouraging every single minute. The harder you work at this the better you will become.

Learn as much as you can about the areas that interest you. Never stop learning because that is the day that you will go stale. Becoming a lifelong learner will open doors and bring you opportunities. Find the joy in being a student. But do not stop there; implement what you learn as quickly as possible so you will know what questions to ask to move to the next level with whatever you are doing. We cannot learn by sleeping with a book under our pillow. We must take immediate action and find the breakthrough that comes with that.

You can achieve anything you want in your life. Write down your goals, use positive self talk, learn as much as you can, and take action with what you have learned. When you put these things together they become an effective system of getting things accomplished in your life.

  • How to make friends after graduating Post-Secondary

How to make friends after graduating Post-Secondary

Now that things have wrapped up in university and you’re on your way to the real world, there are lots of things you’ll need to devote your time to. Aside from finding work and maintaining a place to live, you’ll also need to think about your social life. It might seem like you’re not going to see your friends again, but there are lots of ways you can keep up with them and meet new people too.

Your friends from university or college will no doubt be worrying about the same things you are, but even if you can’t see them every day you can meet new people and make budding friendships in various ways. Even if you are entering into post-secondary, the following can still be applied:

    Meetup.com

One of the best places you can go to is a website called meetup.com. This website devotes its time to putting together an assortment of group meeting based on personal preference. You can choose which activities you’d like to get involved in and find out which meeting you’d like to go to based on your selection. For example, if you’re interested in sports, you can meet up with people going to a baseball game or playing a game of pickup football. You’re all in the same boat where none of you know each other, but part of the fun is meeting new people.

    Book clubs

There’s nothing better for some people than getting together and discussing literature. What better way to meet new like-minded people than to join a book club? You’ll all read a book before getting together to discuss it and share your ideas. Sort of like The Finer Things Club, which we all know was the most exclusive club on The Office.

    Volunteering

If you want to do some good for your community while also meeting new people, you can volunteer some of your time to a charity of your choice. Whether it’s with animals or with people, you’re bound to meet lots of new people on the job. Plus, you’ll feel better knowing you did some good in the long run.

    Join a class

It might not sound like the best idea to attend more school right after you graduated, but the good news is that you can pick a class based on the things you never got to study in school. Did you want to learn a new language? Maybe you want to know how to bake something without setting the fire alarm off. A night class is a terrific way to meet new people, make new friends, and obtain that skill you’ve been itching to learn. Not to mention, where did you earn some of your best friends? In school!

The most important thing to remember when meeting new people outside of school is that you’ll need to put yourself out there. It might not be super easy, but these are some of the places you can go to start a new friendship and potentially meet some of your new friends.

  • How to Make Friends in your Class

How to Make Friends in your Class

It sounds a bit strange, but it’s not always easy to make friends. Everyone has their own unique personality, and because of that, it’s important to have a range of different ways to get to know people who might just become good friends. Everyone knows that you may not be able to make friends with a certain person, but you may with someone else. It really depends on personalities, so don’t give up. You may just be able to chat with someone in a friendly way at first; it takes time. I also suggest that you do not change your personality or your interests just to be someone’s friend, because that will not work well for anyone involved, and might sour the relationship even further.  Besides, if you keep changing yourself for other people, before long you won’t even know who you are.  I learned the hard way.

    So here are few options:

    • Consider informal conversations. There’s quite a few ways to do this. Bring up a conversation or 20 questions (the game, your favourite TV or something similar) about your interests during a project or a break together, to see if you are a match. Sitting beside another on a school bus trip can also help with this, if they are bored and want to pass the time as well: you can discuss schoolwork, games, or television games. Ask someone to help you with a crossword puzzle or a Sudoku, or to help carry something to where it’s supposed to go.
    • Some people may surprise you talking about a book they read recently, or maybe a television show, a video game- online or through the game systems. This could help get to know one another more. Next thing you know, it’s gone on like that for a while and you have a new friend, which is always a good thing. Remember that most other people are looking for new friends, too.  It’s not just you…
    • Sharing is caring. In this case, I mean, that sometimes giving an ear out for someone who needs to talk, or someone who needs a pen right now to complete that test can go a long way. In this case, when a friend is in need, a friend is what they need.

So, in conclusion, when it comes to making friends in your grade or class, remember that it can be difficult and there’s no guarantee of success. You can have several attempts as you need, and don’t worry if things don’t go well: just try again with another person. You will find a friend – perhaps a stronger, “sibling from another mother” kind of friend, someone you couldn’t part from and would want to keep in touch with long after graduation.

  • The Importance of Asking for Help

The Importance of Asking for Help

    By Erin Rebello

Whether it’s a tight deadline, a stressful week, or bad news, our lives can seem to trap us in positions with the feeling of no escape. We’ve all been there, and it’s normal, but for some people it can be difficult to open up to others and ask for help. Receiving help from family, friends, teachers, and peers is important to one’s mental health and well being. By asking for and receiving help, you are able to overcome life’s difficulties with the support of your loved ones. If you feel like you need more help than your family and friends can give, you can always seek the advice of the medical community.

There are many reasons that people might not ask for help, even when they desperately need it. For one, they might feel like they are bothering their friends or family with their problems and see themselves as a “burden”. Know that you are not a burden and that your friends and family are there to support you. Another issue that some people may have with opening up is their fear that their loved ones will judge them or think of them as weak. It’s easy to let insecurities like these prevent you from getting help, but let me ask a simple question: have you ever judged a friend for their problems? Have you thought of them as weak? Did you think that they were a burden for sharing their problems with you? Chances are that you said no to all of those questions. If that’s the case, your friends probably feel the same way; they care about you and your health and won’t judge you or think you’re weak, because you are not.

Another big reason why someone might avoid asking for help is the idea that nothing will be able to change their situation. This is especially true for emotional problems which deal with internal conflict rather than external issues. While it may be true that some things cannot change, it’s important to realize that they don’t have to change in order for you to heal. Although talking with your friends and family may not bring back a loved one, it certainly helps with managing the pain and moving forward. Opening up to other people may help us to change our outlook on certain situations and allows us to draw strength from our challenges.

If you still don’t feel comfortable about asking your peers or family members for help, that’s valid and okay. Depending on your situation, telling those around may put you in an unsafe position. If this is the case, or if you simply do not want to share your struggles with your loved ones, there’s always the option of receiving help and support anonymously. National helplines like the Kids Help Phone (1-800-668-6868) offer 24/7 call and text support for all youth who require assistance. There are also more specialized lines such as the First Nations and Inuit Hope for Wellness Helpline (1-855-242-3310) for Indigenous youth, and the LGBT Youthline (1-800-268-9688) for youth who identify with the LGBTQ+ community and require support. By utilizing these helplines, you can talk or text anonymously with trained counsellors and support workers who care about helping you. For a full list of national crisis helplines, refer to the list at the end of the article.

In conclusion, asking for help is part of human nature; we are a communal species that requires assistance to overcome certain obstacles in our lives. Some people may feel like there’s no one to hear them, but friends, family, and peers are usually there to listen and help you get better. If you don’t feel like you can reach out to the people closest to you, there’s always the option to call or text anonymous helplines to receive the assistance and support that you require. And remember: there is nothing weak or bad or wrong about asking for help. By admitting that we need help and reaching out to others for assistance, you are proving your strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

  • Inclusivity is a Necessity for Modern Businesses

Inclusivity is a Necessity for Modern Businesses

Inclusivity is not diversity. For years, there has been emphasis on creating diverse workplaces. But discussions on diversity are limited to the different individuals brought into a company, and can often turn into a numbers game of meeting quotas. Inclusiveness, on the other hand, focuses on how these people that are brought in are involved and made important. This is a crucial distinction. Companies that embrace inclusivity are more likely to succeed and help build a more equal society.

Even from the selfish viewpoint of avarice and profits, inclusiveness makes sense. A study by Deloitte LLP concluded that an inclusive company is eight times likelier to achieve better business outcomes, twice as likely to meet or exceed financial goals, and six times likelier to be innovative. Diversity Council Australia has an Inclusion@Work Index that illustrates that inclusiveness leads to 10 times greater productivity. A study by Korn Ferry from March 2019 states that about two-thirds of executives found that inclusion programs aid employee retention. Research clearly shows that diversity and inclusivity lead to improved chances of success.

This approach also leads to happier and healthier workers. According to the Inclusion@Work Index, people in an inclusive work environment were less likely to be harassed, more likely to be satisfied with their job, and nine times likelier to innovate. It is no surprise that corporations are striving to ensure employees are treated fairly, have purpose, and have opportunities to contribute. For example, Australia Post has a public action plan in which they outline their commitment to the people in the company and how this will positively affect the community. Important steps in becoming more inclusive include determining and reducing leaders’ biases, nurturing a listening environment, and building a strong employee resource group. Companies that do not take these steps risk losing their people to organizations that do.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for corporations to ignore all of this. Inclusivity is highly valued amongst youth, and young professionals are expected to make up a huge majority of the workforce in the coming years. Part of the reason it is so important for them is because of the broader impacts. Inclusive companies lead to more satisfied people and better connections between us, which ultimately leads to greater social and economic growth. By working with Indigenous businesses, Australia Post is aligned with the country’s Sustainable Development Goals that help reduce inequality. Improving a company through a focus on inclusiveness improves the communities and world around it.

Diversity is important. Yet reaching certain numbers of groups of people achieves little unless there is a plan to ensure they are valued. Companies that embrace inclusivity are more likely to succeed, change the world around them for the better, and are better prepared for the future. The mindset of the up and coming generation already places much-deserved importance on inclusiveness. This is an important step towards equality in an increasingly unequal civilization. It can turn the tide of rampant economic and social inequality. Companies cannot afford to ignore inclusivity, and neither can the world.
