  • Common Mistakes that College/University Students Make with Money

Common Mistakes that College/University Students Make with Money

Your post-graduation life will largely be about paying off the debts you accumulated while in school. Avoid these very common financial mistakes to make your life in the ‘real world’ less of a strain:

    The credit card hole…

Sometimes credit can seem like an easy way to fix your problems or get what you want quickly. But the truth is that adding to the already massive student loan debt you are accumulating will weigh down your ability for success, your credit rating and your freedom. That is a lot of stress and debt to have on your back before you land a real job. Credit cards are a good thing if you are able to pay off the balance and create a strong credit history. But do not allow yourself to fall into the minimum payment cycle and subsequent interest hole.

Not budgeting your student loan funds…

Never forget that your student loan is for the essentials: tuition, books, transit and living expenses. Make sure that upon receiving the loan you take the time to hash out how much your year is going to cost and how much you have to spend on the different facets of your life. Many people get over excited when a large sum suddenly appears in their bank account. But university is extremely expensive, and the money is never as much as you think it is. Be careful and keep your receipts and a list of your expenses at all times. Be in control of your debt.

Failure to meet with academic advisors…

Academic advisors are detrimental to your success in post-secondary. It is important to see them regularly from before you actually begin school to your very last weeks as a student. It is their job to help you sign up for the correct courses, ensuring that you do not take any courses that will not count towards your degree or ones that will slow down the graduating process. Oftentimes, failing to meet with an academic advisor can result in the loss of thousands of dollars and time. For instance, if you miss a required class, it can entirely throw you off the correct track to graduate at the time you wish.

    Playing around with ‘drop dates’…

Do not forget about the deadlines for dropping classes. If you wait until after the drop date you are waving goodbye to hundreds of dollars rather than receiving a full reimbursement. Remember that taking classes seriously means taking your money seriously. Without commitment you may receive a grade that will not count towards your degree and that is simply a huge waste of time and money.

    Ignoring scholarship opportunities…

There is SO much free money out there. Apply for as many scholarships as possible and chances are you will get at least a few small ones. Set time aside to write letters of intent and have your resume ready and you could easily have a semester paid off. Speak to academic advisors about this, actively use university search engines and speak to your family and about work and organizations they may be involved with that provide scholarships.

  • Why Should Girls Get Involved with STEM?

Why Should Girls Get Involved with STEM?

In our society, girls seem to be underrepresented in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Even more interesting is that in contrast to girls, boys seem to be actively involved in all of these fields. So what’s the deal? Why are girls not participating in these fields as much as boys? These are questions that are stumping researchers and other experts.

There is a stereotype that has been circulating around, that maybe girls just aren’t as good at these subjects as their male counterparts. However, research suggests that there isn’t any evidence to support this claim. We all know girls are just as capable and smart as boys. Researchers have found that, when tested, girls are equally as successful in any of these subjects as boys. However, as long as this negative stereotype continues to persist it can cause real harm. It can actually cause girls to believe that they aren’t good at these subjects before even trying them. There is a natural bias for people to assume that science and math are fields best suited to males and that the arts are better suited to females. Why not disprove this theory?

People also believe that maybe girls aren’t involved in STEM because there aren’t enough female role models in these fields to look up to. Seeing women who are thriving and successful in these fields could make them more enticing to younger females. People like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg have made their fortunes in fields related to STEM. However, there still seems to be lacking female equivalents. It would be great to see females who have invented or developed ideas related to STEM in our society. The women that are contributing and involved in STEM should be given more visibility in order to promote these fields.

There are many reasons why girls should get involved in STEM. Firstly, positions related to these fields are abundant. Why not make contributions to them and stand out from others? Scientists are trying to solve some of the most difficult questions in our time. Engineers are designing different things that we can use to better our lives and make things easier. With the internet and other forms of communication becoming more popular, there are a wide variety of job opportunities relating to technology.  People in these professions are doing creative and innovative things. In addition to this, these positions provide a person with a really great income (who doesn’t like money?). Helping the world and making great money doesn’t sound like a bad thing to me!

  • The Human War with Technology

    The Human War with Technology

Technology innovation has its shortcomings with concerns about the replacement of human beings in the near future.

Technology has become the essence of our everyday lifestyle. A life without our Blackberries or iPhones is a life undoubtedly one that cannot be lived. Imagine how everyday tasks that have been simplified to suit our preferences have been altered by technology to get the job done faster. Whether at school, work, or home; technology has made life easier by replacing everyday tasks with machines that process the work efficiently, saving you time and energy. However, one thing to be wary about is the replacement of, well, human beings. You see, with this booming techno era becoming so dependent on machinery tools to operate us, they will soon operate without us. Technological innovation is so consistent and rapid that every day a couple of new items enter the market for competition and since every company is aware of this massive command, they go to extreme measures. For instance, the need to save time, reduce costs, and improve the safety and reliability of their product, companies will lay off and downsize their staff to hire professionals in the same field located in India, China, or Taiwan for much cheaper labour, but who possess the same credibility and education level (if not more).

According to CareerPlanner.com, some of the jobs that will witness a reduction from North America and Europe in the near future are data entry, programming, technical support, and customer service jobs. Even accounting will be done in countries unfamiliar to our roots; yet have perfectly mastered our education and language. Talent and expertise are no longer suited to a job offer and great pay; the willingness of companies to pay high prices for local contenders will soon be obsolete, and lower-cost labour will move to third-world countries.

However, students can surpass these challenges by choosing wisely their career path today. By picking a profession that cannot be performed remotely by someone else overseas, you can guarantee security. Here are some of the secure jobs of the future (to list a few) that will still be in demand, cannot be replaced, require face-to-face interaction, and speed, and are complex in their nature. When searching for the right career, make sure it requires physical energy, a high level of skills and creativity (so it is not easily completed by someone else), and is hands-on. Do not panic if the career you really love is technology-based; do your homework and make sure you get familiar with onshore/offshore jobs for the future. No job is ever guaranteed, therefore to secure your position for tomorrow you must be aware of the fluctuation of the economy, along with its unexpected changes.  Plan it right today!

  • Preparing for College Applications: A Comprehensive Guide

Preparing for College Applications: A Comprehensive Guide

High school can be a very eventful time. From choosing your courses and meeting new people to securing long-lasting friendships and exploring extracurricular opportunities, students do a lot during these years. Another undertaking, particularly involving those in upper grades, is prepping to apply for colleges/universities. It may be exciting but also stressful to think about as doing so means beginning the process of taking the next big step in your academic career. If this describes your situation and you’re wondering about measures you could take to prepare for college applications, here are a few tips:

Read Ahead on Prospective Schools and Their Application Requirements

Do research as well as read ahead on post-secondary schools you’re considering and their requirements for applications. This will give you the best understanding of what you should do specifically to prepare. In particular, look up what grades and/or grade point average you must have to qualify for programs you’re interested in pursuing. If you find that you come across difficulties with courses that count toward the grade point average calculation, seeking help or trying other study strategies would likely be the most beneficial course of action.

Have An Updated Resume to Refresh Your Memory of Accomplishments

Keep your resume updated as this can refresh your memory regarding what you’ve accomplished and/or participated in thus far. It will help refer back to if you plan on applying to any schools that require writing a personal profile such as the University of British Columbia. These usually involve describing what various experiences you’ve had entailed as well as how they have broadened your horizon. Additionally, try getting as many references as you can. Contact previous supervisors, coordinators, or anyone in a similar position who can attest to what you’ve done and ask if you could add them as a reference. If you have the time, visiting them in person to ask, talking about what you did, as well as telling them your plans remain great options.

Assume More Roles that Will Look Good on Applications

Are there roles you’d like to take on that would look good on applications? This especially pertains if you’re currently in grade 11, not long before you’re applying. Some ideas would be requesting to assume any leadership positions available within clubs you’ve already joined or volunteering outside of school.

Know Where and How to Access Your Transcript

For applications, a current transcript is needed. Most Canadian high school students can access transcripts through their provincial government’s official website. When the time for applying nears, follow the site’s instructions on creating an account for this if you don’t already have one.

Getting ready to apply for college/university can be daunting. Nonetheless, there are several positive, associated implications as well. It could give you opportunities to challenge yourself productively, enjoy new experiences, create meaningful connections, and even provide you with a sense of accomplishment. Overall, if you consider the pointers above, you’re on the right path toward successfully preparing for college applications.

  • Career Profile: Set and Exhibit Designers

Career Profile: Set and Exhibit Designers

If you go to a movie, a play, or a museum, you might barely notice the background, but it is very important. It helps give people the context of the story and makes it seem real. Set and exhibit designers work with directors, producers, and other professionals to prepare sets or exhibits to help people appreciate and understand what they are seeing.

Becoming a set and exhibit designer usually involves getting a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the fine arts. Normally, this training takes at least four to six years of studying after high school. Some people might be able to get a job without these qualifications, but having a background in the theory behind set and exhibit design is helpful. For example, people can use what they learn about the history of the set and exhibit design to do something unique and interesting. This can help them stand out to employers and make it easier to get jobs.

Besides learning the basics, set and exhibit designers might specialize in a particular era or type of design. One person might choose to work mainly with sets related to the Renaissance era in the 1500s or to work mainly on exhibits related to animals or the climate. However, general knowledge is still important.

In high school, people can already start to prepare for this job. Art or theatre classes are useful, as well as possibly mathematics for learning to calculate spaces and amounts. English or history classes can also help people understand the important features of each project and to communicate clearly.

Set and exhibit designers can work in a variety of places. Often, they work in film, video, television, and theatre. Exhibit designers are most likely to find work at museums or retail stores. Someone who can do both will have the best chance of finding work, but even some smaller cities or towns can have a few jobs in this field. Cities or towns with several museums or theatres are the best places to find work. Salaries usually start at over $70,897 per year and can rise to more than $94,000 per year, depending on the type and location of the job.

People working as set and exhibit designers should be able to work with others but also to work alone. The first part of any job involves consulting the people at the theatre or museum to learn what they want. Next, the set or exhibit designer might conduct some research about the place or era being portrayed. Accuracy is important so that the set or exhibit looks as real as possible. For example, having a modern car in a set portraying a scene from the 1930s would look wrong. Having the details right helps the audience experience the play or the exhibit more fully.

Daily work for a set and exhibit designer can vary, depending on the situation. Some people in this field spend much of their time in an office, making drawings and measurements for the set or exhibit. Others might be very much involved in putting the different parts together and might sometimes need to lift heavy objects. Either way, they should be available to help solve any problems that arise.

Working as a set and exhibit designer can be an exciting job for people who are creative and able to work with others. You can already start to prepare for this career.
