  • Career Profile: Gem Setter/Goldsmith

    Career Profile: Gem Setter/Goldsmith

Every morning, people put on rings, bracelets, and more. Before they can do that, however, someone has to design and make the items. Gem setters and goldsmiths work with a variety of materials to make the jewellery that people wear each day. If you are creative and like to work with your hands, you should consider this career option. Working in this field can be a rewarding and interesting choice.

Normally, goldsmiths and gem setters work at jewellery stores or repair shops, although it is possible to do some of the work from home with the right equipment. Many people learn the techniques on the job from other workers in the trade. Apprenticeships can be a good way of learning what to do in this field.

For people who prefer to learn in a classroom, courses in this field are available at many career colleges and even some universities. Courses covering basic techniques are available in many schools, but students might need to go to a university to study advanced techniques like hydraulic die forming and granulation. Students can also learn the differences between the hardness of diamonds, for example, and the relative softness of emeralds or other gems. In some jobs, official qualifications might be necessary.

Depending on their level of experience and skills, goldsmiths and gem setters can earn between about $15 and $29 per hour. Generally, people who work with diamonds earn more than others. Having good vision, with or without glasses, and steady hands is essential for this job. Often, people in this field work with tiny jewels and need good vision for such detailed work. As people age, their vision becomes worse and their hands might begin to shake. When the work becomes too difficult, people might need to retire or change jobs.

Sometimes when customers buy jewellery, they might want it as a gift for a friend or relative. For that, they might want an engraving of the person’s name on it. When goldsmiths know how to do special tasks like engraving, they will have more possibilities for work. Although it is good to have a wide range of knowledge for different customer requests, it is often good to have a specialty, as well. For example, a gem setter could specialize in a certain design or a goldsmith could work mainly with wedding rings.

Often, people in this field work fairly regular hours, but they might need to work on weekends or holidays in some cases. The work is not very physically strenuous. Still, working with tiny gemstones and small earrings or necklaces can be tiring on the eyes and the back.

Like many other fields, goldsmith and gem setting work depends on the economy. When other people have good jobs and can afford to pay for jewellery, they will buy much more than when the economy is struggling.

Some work will always be available, especially in large cities, but people in this trade should have other options in mind, just in case the work declines. For people who enjoy working with their hands and taking care of tiny details, becoming a goldsmith or gem setter is a good choice.

  • Why Allowing Yourself to Be Bored Is Good

Why Allowing Yourself to Be Bored Is Good

The term “bored” often has a negative connotation. Do a Google search of “I am bored” and most likely the next phrase that comes up is “what should I do?”, as if being bored is a disease in need of a cure. However, being bored doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing if you take on a different perspective.

In fact, a study published in the journal Academy of Management Discoveries revealed that one’s boredom can actually lead to individual productivity and creativity. In this research, the people who were asked to sort a bowl of beans by colour, one by one, were discovered to have performed better on idea-generating tasks than those who were asked to do an interesting craft activity.

Of course, don’t take this to mean that you’ll have to force yourself to be idle so that it could spark your creativity. It doesn’t work that way. Doing that will only lead to your tasks piling up, and you certainly wouldn’t want that. The type of boredom that can stimulate your imagination is happenstance, something that happens when you’ve completed all your things to do. You have free time to do whatever you please – whether to watch that buzzworthy new TV series on Netflix or play that trendy videogame on your new PS5 – but still end up feeling bored. In times like this, don’t beat yourself up as you could actually be on the road to a more creative and imaginative headspace.

Yes, it can happen! Here are tips on how to get the most out of being bored.

    Enjoy it!

It does seem contradictory, but who’s to say that you can’t enjoy being bored, especially if you’ve spent the whole of 2020 buried in schoolwork and your piano lessons while babysitting for your neighbours? There’s nothing to be ashamed of if a day comes up in your daily planner with zero tasks and nothing to check off on your to-do list, which can be extremely stressful. Take this time to recharge your batteries and enjoy it.

    Unplug!

We’ve been so reliant on our technological gadgets that the minute we find ourselves doing nothing, we instinctively reach out for our mobile phones and tablets. If you’re having the urge to do this, stop yourself and keep those devices out of your reach. Don’t fall into the temptation of searching for new apps that help fill your time or looking for memes of the day. It’s a hard habit to break, for sure, but a few hours being without your cellphone won’t kill you.

    Say yes to mundane tasks!

Perhaps there’s a task you’ve put off for so long because you think it’s too boring or it wasn’t that urgent in the first place, like sorting your wardrobe by colour or organizing your computer files. Give these tasks a chance and try your best to find joy in it. Seeing a closet where your clothes are arranged by shade is definitely pleasing to the eyes, right? Or an organized file setup on your laptop means you’re able to find what you need easily. Doing these small duties also allows you to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Now it’s time for “autobiographical planning.”

This is a term coined by cognitive psychologists and neuroscientists like Sandi Mann of the University of Central Lancashire and the author of The Upside of Downtime: Why Boredom is Good. Mann believes that when one is bored and lets their mind wander or daydream, the possibility to do autobiographical planning becomes much stronger, where we examine our lives, look at the big (or small) moments, and set a goal for ourselves and think about the steps to reach those goals. This is when your creativity will most likely kick in.

So the next time you find yourself bored, don’t fight it. Instead, embrace it with all your might! The process will have its rewards.

  • Keeping Your Computer Files Clean

    Keeping Your Computer Files Clean

    By Erin Rebello

If you’re anything like me, you know how difficult it is to keep your computer home page clean! No matter how much effort I put into keeping everything neat and tidy, within a week it goes back to its usual state of chaos. As a result of the mess, it’s been harder to feel motivated to get my work done and be productive. I decided that I needed to make a change to boost my productivity, so that’s exactly what I did! Over the winter break, I took another shot at keeping my computer tidy, and so far it seems to be working well. Without all the clutter, it’s much easier to focus on my work, and I find myself being far more motivated than I was before! Below are a few helpful tips and tricks that I used to keep my computer files organized.

    1. Delete what you don’t need. Whether it’s an old book report from elementary school, or some image files you downloaded for a project, there is bound to be a lot of junk cluttering up your computer. Not only is this unpleasant to look at, but having too many files will actually slow your computer, which is certainly not ideal! The best way to deal with this issue is by setting aside a day to thoroughly sort through your computer files, and by discarding old, irrelevant, or unnecessary ones.
    2. Take advantage of cloud storage. If there are any files that you want to access from multiple computers, consider using cloud-based storage solutions. Instead of saving your data to a single computer hard drive, saving to the cloud allows you to access your data from anywhere at any time – no need for those pesky USBs! You also don’t have to worry about constantly saving your work, as it autosaves! Some great cloud drive systems are Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Apple iCloud.
    3. Use folders to create categories. After you’ve decided what files you want to keep, you should go one step further and organize them into categories. What the specific categories are is up to you, but personally I like to have one folder for each of my grade levels, and within these folders, I have separate folders for each of my subjects. This way, I can keep all my school-related items in one place on my computer. Other important folders I have include “Photos” “Jobs and Resumes” and “Microsoft Applications.”
    4. Keep games off your main screen. As someone who loves gaming, I have had my fair share of video games saved to my computer. Although I love spending my free time playing these games, having them on my home screen can make them tempting to play when I have more important things to be doing. For this reason, I recommend putting all your games into a tidy folder and keeping it in the corner of your home screen. Personally, I’ve found that this prevents me from a lot of “impulse-playing” and has allowed me to be more productive
    5. Follow the 40/60 rule. When organizing your files and folders on your home screen, make sure that you only cover 40% or less of the screen, leaving the remaining 60% empty. If you have too many files to do this, use more folders! I’ve found that this rule helps a lot with managing my files. It also makes my main screen more appealing, and less overwhelming to look at.

Although this certainly isn’t a conclusive list, following these tips and tricks should put you on the path towards a more productive computer setup!

  • Building a Career in Politics

    Building a Career in Politics

    By Erin Rebello

If you’ve been keeping up with the news lately, you’ve probably heard about ongoing political battles that occur both within our nation and around the world. With everything from education, to civil services, to COVID-19 relief, there is a political official making decisions for the greater population. With the world being so intertwined with politics during these uncertain times, there has been an increase in students interested in politics. You yourself may have also considered what it’s like to be Justin Trudeau or Doug Ford! But before you start planning your first campaign, there are a few things you should keep in mind when considering a career in politics.

A good place to start for any aspiring politician is the newspaper (and no, I don’t mean the comics section!). Politicians require a solid understanding of the needs of the community they intend to serve, and should thus be well educated on the issues which their people face. Newspapers also have a lot of information regarding the political climate and the economy, and can be a great source of data. Besides a physical newspaper, you can also turn to news websites, YouTube news channels, and even television news. Regardless of how you prefer to digest your media, you should make sure that the news you’re getting is as unbiased as possible. If a piece of media favours one side too much, it might give you incorrect or faulty information, so you should ideally look for multiple perspectives from different sources.

If you want to take things a step further and really educate yourself on pressing issues, speak with your guidance counsellor and see if it’s possible to take relevant courses in your school. These courses are typically under a department called “Canadian and World Studies” and some specific courses you might want to take are:

    • Canadian and International Law
    • Canadian and World Politics
    • Global Issues
    • Current Economic Issues
    • Creating Sustainability
    • Aboriginal Issues in Canada

Taking relevant courses in high school will help set a good foundation for a career in politics, giving you information about laws, political systems, and current issues. They’ll also give you a sense of whether or not you’d be interested in pursuing this field further. If you’re not a fan of analyzing laws or preparing debates, you might be better suited for another field. Additionally, some of these courses may also be mandatory for certain university programs, so be sure to check the requirements of any programs you’re considering.

Finally, the best way to prepare for a career in politics is to dive right in and get involved! You may be wondering how you could possibly get involved in high school, but there are actually plenty of opportunities if you know where to search! Below is a list of a few things you can do to get involved:

    1. Volunteer with a local political party. Most parties are always looking for volunteers, and even accept high school students to help with local events or distributing flyers in neighbourhoods.
    2. If you’re over 16, register with Elections Canada to work at an election booth. The pay is really great, and you’ll learn a lot about how voting works.
    3. Run for a position in student government. Even if you don’t win, you’ll learn about campaigning and the election process.
    4. Get involved with local youth political groups. In Toronto, there is a youth group known as the “Toronto Youth Council” which meets once a month at City Hall. There are focus groups on specific areas, too, such as urban health, city budgets, transportation, etc. Many other cities have their own versions of this, so do a bit of research and ask your teachers and guidance counsellors.
    5. Get involved with school politics at the board level. Most schools have their own version of a student senate, where students from all boards in the district come together to discuss important issues. If you enjoy participating in the student senate, you should also consider running for student trustee! It’s a huge responsibility, but allows you to create real change within your school board while still being in high school.

These are just a few of the ways you can get involved. But there’s definitely more than this, so do your own research as well!

  • Planning for Productivity in Virtual School

Planning for Productivity in Virtual School

    By Erin Rebello

If you’re one of the thousands of students who have switched to virtual school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you’re probably really stressed out about productivity at home. I wouldn’t blame you. Switching from going to school every day to attending from home is a huge shift that essentially happened overnight. Although we’re already several months into this new normal, you may still be experiencing some issues with being productive. If this sounds anything like you, check out some of the tips below to improve your study habits and plan for a year of productivity – even if you’re doing school at home!

    Keep an Agenda

I cannot stress enough how important an agenda is! They are absolute lifesavers, and having an agenda is a crucial part of setting the framework for any sort of productivity. Personally, I love physical agendas, and every year I go shopping for a new one with a pretty cover; the cuter my agenda is, the more motivated I feel to use it. Physical agendas also work well for me because the act of writing down and crossing off tasks helps me with organizing my schoolwork. If you’re more technology-inclined, you can also set up an online agenda or calendar using any of the hundreds of free apps available in the app store. Some apps even allow you to set up notifications and reminders, which is a really helpful feature in this day and age.

    Create a Dedicated Workspace

One aspect of schooling that I really do miss when I’m working at home is the physical structure of the school. No, I did not care for the hard, plastic chairs or the wobbly desks, but the actual feeling of being in school made me feel the need to complete schoolwork. When I’m at home school doesn’t feel as real – it feels like an abstract concept that has no meaning. This has been terrible for me because school is extremely important as a 12th grader! Recently, I’ve tried to combat these feelings by creating a dedicated workspace for schoolwork at home. Although it’s taken a while, I found that over time, by sticking to this one workspace, I’ve drastically improved my productivity, as I associate this space with schoolwork. Try it out. It might just work for you too!

Make Sure to Get Enough Sleep

I’ve always struggled with getting enough sleep, whether it’s due to excessive studies, social distractions, or even just some good old fashioned insomnia. Although I would stay up late before school, I would at the very least try to give myself enough sleep to wake up in time to prepare for school. However, without the need to attend a physical school, I went through a very unhealthy phase where I treated every day like a weekend, staying up late and fully exhausted the next day. Although I didn’t connect the dots at the time, this reckless behaviour led to a lot of unproductivity, as I’d be taking constant naps! Once I started prioritizing sleep, I felt refreshed, awake, and ready to learn! The bottom line is this: learn from my mistakes, and “catch up on those z’s!”

    Be Kind to Yourself

We are living through a literal pandemic, and although it’s something for the history books, it’s not a lot of fun to endure. Considering the gravity of the current situation, please be kind to yourself! You are not expected to be perfectly fine. You are not expected to be productive at all times. Your productivity does not define your self-worth. Say these statements out loud until you believe them. In times like these, self-love and self-kindness is crucial to staying afloat and maintaining good mental health. Take breaks and don’t burn yourself out! Your well-being is more important than being productive 24/7 or getting A’s all the time. Find a good balance that works for you, and stick with it!

  • Doing Your Research on Post-Secondary Institutions

Doing Your Research on Post-Secondary Institutions

    By Erin Rebello

It’s that time of year again where many grade 12 students are planning (and perhaps also panicking) about choosing a post-secondary institution to attend after high-school. As an almost-adult, you’re making a major decision that affects the trajectory of your life for at least the foreseeable future, so the pressure is definitely on. Whether you’re planning on going to university, college, or trade-school, choosing a post-secondary institution is a huge responsibility and can seem extremely daunting. Although there are many things you can do to prepare, I would say that the best thing you can do is research the institution! Below are a few reasons why research is so crucial to making the right choice.

Ensuring the Program is Right for You

The first reason you should research your schools of choice is to ensure that the programs which you’re applying to are right for you. There are many aspects of a program to look at when considering whether it’s a fit for you or not, including:

    • Does it give you the level of education you desire? (e.g. diploma, degree, etc.)
    • Will this program help you to get the job you want in the future?
    • Does the required coursework interest you? Is it beneficial to you?
    • Are you eligible for this program? Do you have the necessary courses and grades?
    • How long is this program? Is it worth it for you?

These are only a few of the questions you should be considering when researching a school. By asking such thoughtful questions about a post-secondary institution, you’re able to really think about whether the institution you’re planning on applying to would meet your needs. If you require help with answering any of these questions, you shouldn’t hesitate to visit the school’s website, or even get into contact with an admission counsellor or program representative.

Making Sure that the Culture of the School is What You Want

Although all institutions can be considered good choices for their own reasons, some schools are simply more specialized and thus better in certain fields than others. For example, the University of Waterloo is widely considered to offer some of the best engineering programs in Canada, due to the in-depth studies and international co-op opportunities. You should also look at details such as how social an institution is, and what the student experience is like. I highly recommend that students book an online tour with any of the universities they are interested in, as it will give them a better understanding of the educational and social culture surrounding the school.

    Finances

Another major factor to research when picking universities is the cost of attending the institution. Is it affordable for your situation? Some programs are extremely expensive, and though they may seem intriguing, it might just be in your best interests to save yourself from the student debt and choose a less costly alternative. When looking at finances, be sure to also check out the financial support offered by the school, as well as any entrance scholarships or bursaries that you would be eligible for. Most schools have a page specifically for finances, and sometimes they even have a cost calculator to help you get a better understanding of the price. Even a little research can go a long way with helping with costs.

    Deadlines

Finally, when choosing programs, you most certainly need to look for the deadlines of that program. Some specific ones have earlier deadlines than others. You want to make sure that you’re familiar with any important deadlines so that you don’t miss out on any of the programs that you’re interested in. You can check out the school website and even email admission staff for any further assistance.

  • Happy New Year! (And New Start)

Happy New Year! (And New Start)

We made it. It’s finally January 1, 2021. I know we’ve all been saying this, but 2020 was a difficult, wild, and unpredictable year. When that New Year’s Eve countdown hit zero, we left 2020 behind, but not the challenges that came with it. However, with the new calendar comes a new beginning and a refreshed optimism, and that resiliency will carry us through this winter of lockdowns, remote learning, and an uncertain future for jobs and careers. We’ve got this!

With this new beginning comes a new JPD Content Editor. I’m Anthony, a writer/editor who’s been writing for JPD for 5 years, and I’m excited to start my journey in this role. Erin did such great work as Content Editor and I know I’ve got big shoes to fill. Luckily for me, JPD has a fantastic team of writers. I’m honoured to get to work with them to bring you articles helping to make sense of all the complex social issues and uncertain future of jobs that we all face.

2021 has a lot of unknowns waiting ahead. It’s important to not let that fear stop us. Now is the time to make sure you are okay and do whatever self-care is needed. Now is the time to reach out to friends and family, even if just to check in. Now is the time to be brave and ready to adapt. The world of work is changing, and this means it’s a world full of chances to change things for the better – more remote jobs that get rid of commutes and open up opportunities for those with disabilities, more support systems for our mental health and financial aid, and a green recovery that can save our planet. Let’s do this!
