  • Financial Aid Available for Post-Secondary Students with Disabilities in Prince Edward Island

Financial Aid Available for Post-Secondary Students with Disabilities in Prince Edward Island

This is the next article in my series of articles outlining the financial assistance available to Canadian post-secondary students with disabilities. Every province will be covered and given their their own article in order to accurately reflect their own unique financial aid availability. Prince Edward Island will be the focus of this article.

The provincial government’s Department of Workforce and Advanced Learning administers among other programs, Student Financial Services. The Canadian and Prince Edward Island governments together provide student financial aid, with the latter responsible for processing and distributing the funding. Below, the first two are courtesy of the federal government and the third is unique to Prince Edward Island.

    1. The Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities

Eligible students with permanent disabilities may receive a maximum of $2,000 per academic year. This funding is meant to assist with paying for education-related expenses.

To be eligible, you must have been assessed to have a minimum of $1 in financial need; enrolled in either full-time or part-time studies; and provide evidence of physical or learning disability. Students with physical disabilities must submit a Permanent Disability Medical Form; this form can only be completed by a relevant health care professional. Students with learning disabilities must submit their psycho-educational assessment; these evaluations are must be performed by a registered psychologist. Note that Student Financial Services will only look at your application once the all medical documentation has been submitted and received.

    1. The Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities for Services and Equipment

Eligible students with permanent disabilities may receive a maximum of $8,000 per academic year. This funding is meant to assist with paying for services and equipment that allow students with disabilities to access post-secondary education.

The eligibility requirement is simple: in order to be eligible for this grant, you must have been approved to receive the Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities.

The application process is a little less simple: wait until your general financial aid application has been reviewed and approved, then you will need to meet with your school’s accessibility services or disability coordinator. Together, you will determine what services and equipment will be needed for that academic year. The school must be involved because they will be the one receiving the cheque with funds to cover the requested services and equipment. However, it is your responsibility as the student to ensure all spending is accounted for; you must keep all receipts and send them to Student Financial Services. Should you have leftover funds that do not get used, they have to be paid back.

    1. Prince Edward Island Severe Permanent Disability Benefit

This benefit is unique to Prince Edward Island. Having a severe permanent disability can mean the person cannot pursue further post-secondary education or join the workforce. If this reflects your circumstances and you have student loans, you can apply to have these loans terminated through this benefit, so you no longer have to pay them back.

In order to apply, you must first apply for approval for the Federal Severe Permanent Disability Benefit. Note that approval for this benefit ensures your federal student loans are voided. The next step is contact the provincial Student Financial Services and apply for the Prince Edward Island Several Permanent Disability Benefit. You must complete an application; part of this application requires evidence documenting your approval for the Federal Severe Permanent Disability Benefit. If you receive provincial approval, your provincial student loans will be cancelled—note that this approval means you may not apply for any student financial assistance in the future.

Prince Edward Island Student Financial Services provides students with disabilities access to two federal grants as well as a benefit that essentially turns previous loans into grants. The first two are available to students with disabilities across Canada while the last is available only in Prince Edward Island.

  • Financial Aid Available for Post-Secondary Students with Disabilities in Nova Scotia

Financial Aid Available for Post-Secondary Students with Disabilities in Nova Scotia

We are soon coming to the end of this series of articles outlining what financial aid is available to post-secondary students with disabilities in the provinces and territories across Canada. This article focuses on Nova Scotia, the last province to be featured. The Northwest Territories and Nunavut are the only territories yet to be written about.

The program responsible for student financial assistance in the Nova Scotia government is called the Student Assistance Program. Students with disabilities are supported in three significant ways. One, they are given more time to complete their studies: a maximum of 520 weeks of funded studies, compared to 340 weeks for other students.

Two, full-time students will generally be given more funding than part-time students. For reference, full-time studies is defined as taking at least 60% of a full course load. Students with disabilities are given greater flexibility in this determination: if they are taking at least 40% of a full course load, they are considered to be full-time students. This designation allows them to hold a more manageable schedule and access greater funding.

Which brings us to three: students with disabilities are given additional funding to ensure equitable access to education. Read on below for the details.

    1. The Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities

Students with disabilities in Nova Scotia will complete the same general application as other students—except the application must indicate that the applicant is a student with disabilities. With this one application, the student is assessed for both federal and provincial financial aid.

This grant is a federal grant, giving students with disabilities a maximum of $2,000 per school year (August 1 to July 31 of the next year). This funding may be used to cover tuition and related costs.  Students are eligible if they are found to have at minimum $1 of financial need; are taking either part-time or full-time studies; and submit documentation of a physical or learning disability.

    1. The Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities for Services and Equipment

This federal grant provides additional support for students with disabilities who may need specialized services and equipment in order to access their education. A maximum of $8,000 is available per school year. As long as the applicant has been approved for the Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities, the applicant is eligible for this second grant.

A separate application is required for each year students want to apply for the Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities for Services and Equipment. This application will require students to clearly indicate what services and equipment are necessary as well as their associated estimated costs.

The general application process for students with disabilities is to first complete and submit the general application. This application will ask if you are a student with disabilities and you will indicate yes to that question. The next step is to gather and submit your medical documentation. Of the two grants above, you are automatically considered for the first while the second requires a separate application. The key is to apply early!

  • The Advantages of Having a Variety of Jobs

The Advantages of Having a Variety of Jobs

We’ve all been told time and time again that it’s important to follow your dreams when deciding on our career path, but as the cliché goes, life happens when you’re busy making other plans. As much as we want to pursue our ambitions as soon as we get a chance to, sometimes things come up that hinder or stall our grand plans. We don’t want to give up on what we initially set ourselves to do, but bills pile up and other responsibilities and commitments crop up, and we realize it’s important to be more realistic and practical than determined and passionate. Such a scenario can lead to doing things that are not aligned with our dreams, but it doesn’t mean it can’t take us there.

Just take for example Sam Walton. You might not know him by name, but you certainly know his business. As a teen, Sam did everything he could to earn money—from milking cows to selling newspapers to offering magazine subscriptions—until he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After his service, Sam purchased a hardware store, which eventually grew to be what we know today as Walmart. Although he passed away in 1992, his legacy will continue to live on as Walmart remains to be one of the biggest retail corporations in the world.

If there is anything Sam has taught us, it’s that working a variety of jobs to make a living is a good thing. If Sam didn’t do all those things, there’s no doubt Walmart would exist today. So if you’re stuck with various work experience that may not be in line with what your target profession is, continue to persevere and you’ll reap your rewards eventually. Here’s a look at why doing a variety of jobs can benefit you:

You develop a great sense of flexibility.

If you’re juggling multiple jobs at a time, you’re bound to build up your flexibility as you make sure to adjust your skills and talents for each job. Chances are, you’ll eventually have a great set of transferrable skills that you can certainly use once you’re ready and able to go after your target career. For example, if you work at a cashier at a supermarket, you enhance your money management skills or if you work as a call centre representative, you fine-tune your customer service skills. Both abilities will serve you well if you’re targeting a manager position at a designer store or a senior position at a bank.

    You get more excitement.

Doing the same job and being in the same work environment from year in, year out can take a toll on anyone. You’ll find yourself bored and restless as the job becomes tedious. By working a variety of jobs, you always have something new to look forward to because you know one’s different from the other. Even if you’re hopping from one work shift to another, you’ll know you’re bound to encounter spontaneity somehow because of the variety compared to an employee who works at the same desk job from 9am to 5pm.

You can tap on a hidden interest.

Serendipity isn’t just for love and romance, it can also apply to careers as well. This can happen when you’re juggling multiple jobs that deal with customers from all walks of life, and you realize that you have excellent people skills and thus can target a career in Human Resources or Social Work. Or you can be doing shifts at different coffee shops in the city as a barista, and you would like to make your inner businessperson come out and open your very own coffee chain someday. This is why if current circumstances is forcing you to work a multitude of jobs that’s really not within your career path, don’t say no because who knows, you may discover something new about yourself that leads to a bigger future for you.

    You lay a solid groundwork.

Working at a call centre solving technical issues may not be your dream job, but it teaches you more skills that you can bank on in the future whatever profession you choose to be in. This is because to attend to customer’s issues, you make use of your problem-solving skills and analytical thinking abilities so you can provide the customer the best solution. In any company, these are vital talents that can lead to a senior or leadership role down the line. Same case for retail store attendants who are bombarded with returns or exchanges by customers. You hone your abilities to handle complaints with professionalism and diplomacy, while at the same time develop your talents on how to resolve conflicts. Again, two pertinent skills that can prove valuable in any industry.

Now that you’ve read the above, it’s highly unlikely that you’re still feeling negative about being all tied up now to working various jobs that have nothing to do with your true passion. You might have taken a different route, but you’ll get to your destination anyway. If anything, you have developed all the skills and talents necessary to get you in the right direction.

  • Far from Fair: Payment and Employment for People with Disabilities

Far from Fair: Payment and Employment for People with Disabilities

Finding, keeping, and enjoying work is a challenge all of us face. Yet this journey is easier for some than others. There is an inherent lack of fairness to life that we all must accept, but we have to be aware of the unfairness we can change. Statistically, people with physical or mental disabilities are less likely to find employment, and if they do, they often receive less pay and are held back from achieving higher positions. There are practices and ways of thinking that must change in order to make things fair.

The federal government has been shutting down sheltered workshops for people with developmental disabilities seeking work. Investigations have revealed that these workers have frequently been paid less than minimum wage, often barely making more than just one dollar per hour. This is justified by calling it a work experience program; employers feel they are doing these individuals a favour, and it is considered sufficient that these workers are not simply stuck at home unemployed. Conversely, studies show that Canada ranks in the top half amongst 16 peer countries when it comes to income for people with disabilities. Statistics such as these can be used to falsely justify the notion that enough is being done. However, the same research also shows that Canada is in the bottom half of those same 16 nations when it comes to employment of people with disabilities.

With Ontario phasing out the aforementioned sheltered workshops, which were often paying illegal wages, more and more disabled people are finding themselves out of work. In 2011, 79% of people aged 25 to 64 without disabilities were employed, compared to just 49% of people with disabilities in the same age group. Even qualified university graduates with disabilities were less likely to hold positions at a management level and earned lower salaries. Two troubling facts are clear: people with disabilities have more barriers to employment, and even when they find work, they are often paid less and nothing is done about it.

As more light is shed on this issue, more is likely to change. Mark Wafer, the owner of multiple Tim Hortons in Toronto, has been an advocate for this and has hired dozens of people with disabilities for his restaurants. The issue is not ability, as is clearly evident from the continuous employment of people with developmental and physical disabilities. Rather, it is greed on the part of employers and the turning of many a blind eye. This is seen in the increasing inequality between the extremely rich and the fading middle class, both nationally and worldwide. We must elect progressive politicians who will ensure fair, living wages for all workers, and support businesses that do the same by choosing to buy their goods or services instead of going to places with unfair practices.

This is not a change that will happen overnight. But it is another step in the battle against increasing inequality. When we ensure that people with disabilities are employed and earning fair wages for work they are clearly capable of doing, we encourage better wages and working conditions for everyone. Awareness is the first step. Be mindful of the stores and restaurants you choose to give your money to, and of the causes and policies that politicians champion at all levels of government. Every step towards fairness is a leap forward for all of us.

  • Practicing Mindfulness: What is mindfulness and why is it so important for You?

Practicing Mindfulness: What is mindfulness and why is it so important for You?

Mindfulness is something we can do and practice to help us connect with ourselves and the world around us in the present moment. Mindfulness is important because it can help you feel happy and can help reduce and eliminate stress! Some mindful activities you might enjoy could include things as simple as listening to calming music, reading a book, writing in a journal, colouring, or taking a walk outside, practicing deep breathing, eating mindfully and doing meditation.  In this article, we will look at 3 different mindful activities, how to use them and how they can improve your life!

    1. Breathing Buddy:

This mindful activity is a great way for you  to find comfort and release tension quickly. You will need a stuffed animal (your breathing buddy) for this exercise! Next, you lie down on your back with your breathing buddy laying on your belly. Watch and focus your attention on the rise and fall of the stuffed animal as you breathe in and out. This activity teaches kids to breathe through their stomachs rather than just their chest. Good things about this activity: more energy, less stress, better blood flow, relaxation, comfort, and peace.

    1. Mindful Walking – “Noticing Walk”:

This mindful activity is a relaxing way to decrease stress, get you  outdoors and improve focus. Going outside for a 10-30 minute walk can be very helpful and can boost your mood drastically! While you are walking around the neighbourhood, try to notice things you haven’t seen before. For 1-5 minutes of the walk, designate a moment of silence where you can pay attention to all the sounds you hear, for example: birds, people in the distance, cars driving past, lawnmowers or rain! This activity is great because it not only gets you  outside but also improves your  observational and attentive skills; it also can help with directional skills and make you  feel more relaxed and comforted in your neighbourhood!

    1. Meditation practices – “The Balloon”:

Meditation can be challenging , but with practice, it can become very helpful and beneficial to improve energy, focus, and attention. This meditation activity, “The Balloon”, can be done standing or sitting. Relax your body and start taking deep breaths in through your mouth, and slow breaths out through your nose. When you take slow deep breaths in, try to fill your belly up with air, as if you were trying to blow up a big balloon. Then, slowly let the air out through the nose as you release the breath from your belly. Feel your entire body relax each time you exhale. Doing “The Balloon” or other meditation activities may take some work but they can be very helpful and calming. While you are breathing, think about the colour of the giant balloon you’re blowing up. If you want, when you inhale you can stretch your arms up above your head representing the balloon expanding and when you exhale, bring your arms down by your side again.

There are many different ways to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness helps us connect with ourselves at the moment, and the benefits can be long-term. The results of a study conducted by the “Journal of Child and Family Studies” in 2011 proves the effectiveness of an 8-week mindfulness program for kids ages 8-12 (especially children with ADHD or Autism), with results being reduced ADHD behaviours,  reduced stress, improved mood and better performance in school. Finally, practicing mindfulness can be  very important in your life because it can help reduce stress, improve mood levels and confidence, and overall it can help you live happy and healthy lives!

  • From Beginning to End: An Authors and Writers Career Profile

From Beginning to End: An Authors and Writers Career Profile

Writing is one of the first things we learn when we begin school. For many, writing becomes an outlet for their feelings or creativity. Choosing a career in professional writing  gives you a way to tell a story and have the reader see it in their own unique way. Your writing can lead to many people learning things that they didn’t know were possible. The possibilities of what to write are endless.

Authors and writers can open doors to the most creative parts of a reader’s mind and can take them to far away lands or into the minds of complex characters. But it does not have to be all fictional. You can find books about anything, fiction and non-fiction. If making up a story and telling it how you want is not the direction you would like to go, then don’t. You can write non-fiction books about real people and real events to educate people directly. It is all up to you.

Now, setting an exact price range of how much authors make is not easy, as it often comes down to the sales. However, the average for freelance authors and writers is only around $9,380.

Getting a job in writing might be easier said than done. Depending on what kind of writing you want to do, you might have a harder time finding work. If you are wanting to write for a newspaper,  magazine or even a website, you will likely have an easier time getting started. Writing books on your own might take some time as you will need to find a publisher and people to sell your book. But that does not cover the amount of work needed before your writing is out there for the world to see. You will need to go through the planning and editing processes,  which is a lot of work, but  absolutely necessary and required for success. .

An education is needed when it comes to almost every career. In order to become a professional writer, employers look for people with a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or communication. The information and techniques you learn from these programs will help make your writing the best it can be.

Sometimes we hold ourselves back from doing what we love, in fear that someone will do it better. But a piece of writing can make a change in people’s hearts or perspectives. And it could be your work that does this for them.  Do not let your potential die out, one day your writing could be somebody’s safe place. Get writing!

  • A Look into the Dying Art of Face-to-Face Communication

A Look into the Dying Art of Face-to-Face Communication

Since social media entered our lives, there have been a slew of criticisms about it in the form of art works, film, and literature, but perhaps no one has been able to capture the disapproval so accurately than Dave Eggers in his best-selling fiction thriller “The Circle.” In the book, Eggers’ characters debate that communication done through social media is nothing more than mere “snack food”—no nourishment, just empty calories. In the book, Eggers’ characters even suggest that going on a digital binge or spending too much time online is akin to eating a while bag of chips in one sitting: you still end up feeling “wasted and hollow.”

While we can’t deny the rewards that social media has offered us whether we are reaching out to a friend or family member miles and miles away or scheduling a last-minute surprise birthday party for a loved one, apps like Facebook Messenger or What’s App has us covered. Unfortunately, if we reap rewards, we also encounter bumps along the way. Let’s take a closer look below at the lost art of in-person communication in the midst of virtual communication.

    No In-person Interactions, no problems

Social media has in some way changed the way we deal with problems. If we have to deliver a piece of bad news to a friend or family member, say we lost a precious piece of jewellery we borrowed from them to attend a lavish party, we don’t feel the importance of delivering it in person and instead settle for a virtual medium because it’s the easier way out. This way, we can easily say our apologies via instant message while providing ourselves the privilege to escape the repercussions of our mistake and avoid the messy aftermath. We remain unscathed so to speak.

On the other end of the spectrum, we hope the recipient of the message does not make a big deal out of the bad news we’ve just delivered, and we assume that they get the hint that the mere fact we used an online medium means that the news is of trite importance anyway and that it’s so trivial it didn’t warrant a face-to-face interaction. You don’t bother to consider their feelings about the whole scenario. For you, losing jewellery is nothing, and you assume the owner feels the same way, even when that’s not the case.. Therefore, the news should be taken lightly and you wipe your hands clean of what has transpired.

    Well-informed but detached

With social media, it’s easy to be informed of a certain situation or issue but not necessary emotionally involved in it. We click on the like or dislike button on a post like that’s the be-all and end-all of it, and move on to the next one. While we get to learn new things everyday by logging online, we don’t allow ourselves time to totally immerse ourselves on that new information, be it a civil war in another country or a labour dispute in a nearby province. We pride ourselves in knowing what’s happening around the world, but we can’t bring ourselves to be emotional about it.

    Diminished social connection

Studies have shown that kids who would rather interact via their screens loses valuable social skills in return. Marc Brackett, director of Yale University’s Center for Emotional Intelligence, says the more time kids spend onscreen, the less chances they have to understand emotions and create strong bonds with people around them, and it applies to adults as well. In addition, there’s also too much dependence on the use of emojis or emoticons, but they are no substitute for voice inflection, body language, and facial expression, which one has access to during face-to-face interactions.

    Social media augments relationships

Just the same, there are individuals who believe that social media is not at all bad. Last year, a group of researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia have found that social media use has no significant negative effect on social interactions or social well-being. Michael Kearney, assistant professor at the MU School of Journalism, believes that ultimately, it’s up to individuals to decide how to maintain their relationships, and whether that’s through social media or other means does not matter. What matters is that people make an effort to keep in touch.

Social media is “not intrinsically bad”

Kids spending time on screens is “not intrinsically bad for children’s health” according to leading pediatricians in the United Kingdom. However, it must be said that parents must ensure their children get enough sleep, exercise, and family interaction. For teens, it’s up to them to instill self-discipline to limit their time online and make sure they get sufficient sleep time and exercise and spend quality time with family.

It’s wrong to automatically assume face-to-face interaction is better than online interaction as both has its own advantages and disadvantages. However, the better thing to do is find ways to make work alongside the other.

  • Board Games!

    Board Games!

Family game night is an event everyone can look forward to. Age gaps between family members needn’t prevent the whole gang from having fun. If you’re looking for a board game suitable for children, but enjoyable for adults, these are the best options on the market.

    5 Second Rule

Players need to be quick on their feet with this game. With over 300 questions available, players are asked to name three things of a particular category in five seconds. A few examples of topics are three dog breeds, three vegetables, or three people whose name starts with “John”.

What may seem simple in the beginning quickly becomes a game of skill as players need to think quickly and articulate their thoughts properly. Various versions exist (such as 5 Second Rule Jr.) and you can easily play it with children. Even if the questions more pander to kids, adults can still get tongue-tied!

You can play with three or more players aged 10 and up.

    Googly Eyes

This one’s a great game for anyone in the family. The objective of the game is to put on the image-distorting glasses and attempt to complete a drawing challenge. Other players then need to try and guess what you’re doodling before the timer runs out.

The glasses also come with three difficulty levels, making it a perfect game for children. Additionally, no one needs to feel left out or embarrassed if they’re not the best artist. Everyone’s going to make something goofy!

You can play with a maximum of six people aged four to 16.

    Apples To Apples

Apples to Apples is an award-winner, so you know it’s a hit with families. This board game helps kids learn language skills and creativity while giving the adults something fun to play as well. The object of the game is for one player (the judge) to draw a green card with an adjective on it. The other players then draw a red card from their pile, all containing various nouns. They pick a noun they think best describes the green card. The judge then picks who wins based on the best selection!

It’s a great choice for four to ten players aged ten and up.

    Why These Games Work

What makes these particular games stand out is their ability to teach kids language acquisition, creativity, and cleverness in a fun setting. These games are ones you can turn back to on family night to relive the magic of your very first sit-down together. They’re also not the types of games to lose their playability on account of memorizing cards or an inability to generate new ideas to keep things fresh.

Family game night is one everyone at home should enjoy. Kids’ games don’t need to bore adults or teens, and they won’t if you know which ones to reach for on shelves. Test your skills and boost your child’s knowledge with these fun, educational games for the whole gang!

  • Talking About Teenage Depression

    Talking About Teenage Depression

Your teenage years are not always your best ones. Depression is a mental illness that negatively affects how a person thinks, it creates problems in one’s mind that they may not want to have or did not intend to have. It’s a disease of the mind, most times it isn’t very noticeable but sometimes it’s very apparent that someone is depressed. The leading cause of depression is anxiety. Anxiety can be described as overwhelming fear, it’s normal to feel anxious every now and then but when anxiety gets out of control it can lead to depression. A great deal of teens get anxiety over their grades, finishing an assignment, social media and fitting in. Hundreds of teenagers worldwide suffer from depression, and oftentimes, nobody even knows they have depression. Most of the time teens do not even show any signs of depression, but that’s the problem; you never really know what’s going on in someone else’s head.

I am just your average grade ten student; however, I have felt heavily depressed before and deal with anxiety on a day to day basis. Depression is not a walk in the park nor is it a phase that teens go through. It’s a mental illness that should be treated as seriously as any other type of mental or physical illness. Often, when teens feel depressed some of their problems are just dismissed as being dramatic, childish, or simply hormonal. Being a teenager isn’t easy at all to say the least. We are consistently hit with homework, the stress of assignments, getting into universities or colleges and, passing all our classes. What is worse is that teachers, parents and adults in general don’t always understand or empathize with this the way that we wished they did. Here are some tips on how you could deal with depression, or help someone around you with depression:

There are different degrees of depression: Not all people need medication for their depression, sometimes all they need is some love and support, not all people with depression look depressed. Different people also show different signs of depression, some people may be extremely irritable and angry, others may have evidently low self-esteem and seem very unmotivated, in students this can show in incomplete homework and assignments and not paying attention or sleeping in class.

Signs of depression: Depression isn’t obvious most of the time, it can show in the little things like a messy room or knotted hair. Signs also include prolonged sadness, low self-esteem, a lot of anger and negative emotions, restlessness, insomnia, giving away any possessions that they hold dear to them, making death seem like a positive thing, and talking and writing about dying. Watch out for those “jokes” that people may make about committing suicide or dying. If you are having suicidal thoughts, please go and see a doctor and get assessed to see if you have depression so that you may get treatment.

Talk to someone: If you think that you may be showing signs of depression, I would highly recommend talking to an adult that you trust, whether it be your favourite teacher, a school counsellor or your parents. Make sure it is somebody who you think can help you. I would mostly recommend an adult because sometimes it’s not good to confide in another person your age, since you don’t know what their problems may be. Reaching out and seeking help is always the best solution. Getting help is very, very important, for when depression gets out of hand it can be fatal. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15-24 in the U.S.

Helping a friend with depression: You may have a friend who is dealing with depression who, unfortunately, may not have a trusted adult in their lives to talk to, so they confide in you. One thing you must do is make sure that your mental health is 100% before you are able to help someone else with their problems. It’s a massive responsibility to help someone sort out their problems and lives, but it would also be good to talk to an adult if you think that your friend may be getting progressively worse. Always offer your support to a friend with depression, let them know that you care for them, however, do not feel the need to take responsibility of how your friend may be feeling, or for any of their actions. That can end up being harmful for both and you and your friend.

Consider everyone’s feelings: Remember, just because someone is sad or having an off day, doesn’t mean that they are depressed. However, it’s always good to check in on your peers and see how they are doing since everyone is fighting their own battles:  some are simply bigger than others.

In the end, the only person who can fight off your depression is you with the help of others, but only if you seek it out.

Volunteering – How to Enjoy Getting Your 40 Community Service Hours

The Importance of Your 40 Community Service Hours

In order to graduate high school, you need a specific amount of earned credits and a completion of 40 community service hours.  Without either of these requirements, one may find it very hard to convince any teacher or principle to allow you to graduate with the rest of your classmates.

The first thing that may come  to mind when the words “community service” are uttered include cleaning up litter from parks. Although these two tasks are good ways to complete your 40 hours, it doesn’t always have to be so plain and boring.

    Explore Your Interests

You do not need to complete your 40 community service hours within the same place with the same people. It also does not have to be completed within a strict short amount of time. You can make a schedule as to when and where you are available. .

Completing your 40 hours seems like a lot to do, but it is not. Don’t over think! The best reason behind all this extra work is to find out who you are as a person and expand your mind to what the world has to offer. This task is made for students to explore their interests, along with helping others, or a specific cause that means something to you. For example, you can receive your first ten hours by volunteering at an elementary school, another ten at your own school, another ten by offering to wash a family member’s car a few times and the final ten by babysitting. Not necessarily in that order, but the idea is to get into the habit of doing a variety of things. Keep in mind, the more things you do to complete your 40 hours, the more different experiences you have for your job resumés.

    Think About Your Future

How you choose to complete the 40 community service hours is solely up to you as an individual. It is always good to do something not only you find amusing, but something that will benefit you in your future.

To get a specific career, you need specific skills. For example, if you are applying to work at a restaurant one day, the first thing you need is to fill out a resumé. In order to do that, you need some experience with a variety of things such as collaboration. Volunteering at a restaurant first is a good way to get your hours and it gives you work experience. Another good way to show good collaboration skills on your resumé is by stating that you have volunteered at a school, a library or a camp to show that you are good with other people in terms of assistance and patience.

    Do What You Love

Personally, I love working with children. Every week I visit my elementary school to help the primary teachers mark spelling tests, clean classrooms and teachi the kids simple math, reading and arts and crafts. Doing these  things does  not make me worry about how many hours I have left or how much longer I have to spend with the children. Since it is something I love to do, the number of hours I spend doing it is the last thing on my mind while the kids are my first priority.

If you do something you love whether it be working with children, filing papers in an office, or taking dogs out for a walk,  it can distract you from the reason why you are doing it in the first place. Instead, it allows you to focus on the task at hand.

    Making a Difference

Volunteering can allow you to have new perspectives on people and things that go on around the world. If you are passionate about preventing poverty or trying to find a cure for cancer, then volunteering at a hospital or the Stop Poverty Foundation is a good place to start. This way it shows that you want to do more and help more while in the process of gaining 40 hours which is great.
