  • How To Get Scholarship Help

    How To Get Scholarship Help

When it comes to college scholarships, the more that you can accumulate the better off you will be. You cannot always rely on college financial aid to be enough to get you through college. After all, financial aid is based on your parents’ salary and their assets, not your own. Therefore, if your parents are not willing or able to help as much as their financial aid sheet says they can, then you may have problems and be in need of college admissions assistance to find a way to afford your tuition. The good news is there are several ways that you can seek out college scholarship help.

Utilize a college financial aid calculator
The first thing you are going to want to do is head online and look for a college financial aid calculator. Although the tuition charged may change from school to school, you will have a rough idea of where you stand on what you will owe if you use a certified calculator. This gives you an estimate of how much you will be left owing after student loans so that you can figure out the amount of scholarships you will need to cover tuition. Keep in mind that scholarships can be applied before financial aid if they are sent directly to the school, so this is another factor to remember while shopping for useful scholarships.

Check out your high school guidance office
The second thing you need to do is make an appointment with your high school guidance office so that you can sit down with your counselor and go over your scholarship options. They are the best window into your local scholarship opportunities. They will know what you are eligible for and, since they have spent years helping other students, they know what you are likely to get. This will help save you a lot of wasted time.

    Seek out college admissions assistance
Another great office to schedule an appointment with is the college admissions assistance office. Their assistance is also invaluable because they have experience helping freshmen every year. They can help guide you through the scholarships available in your college town so you can afford your education. They can also help you see if you qualify for anything directly from the school, because many times schools offer grants and these can be helpful to put towards your tuition.

    Online scholarship help
Finally, the last thing you might want to think about doing is heading online to look for scholarships. There are actually many websites designed to offer college scholarship help to college freshmen. Online searches can reap a lot of rewards because you can apply for dozens of scholarships with just one click of a button, making it a very time efficient way to apply for help.

  • Be True to You

    Be True to You

Each and every single one of us has a unique set of values, beliefs, and even inspirations that make us who we are as individuals. Naturally, as we progress through life, these very important elements that lie at the very core of our existence will slightly alter and adjust in a manner to allow for the new experiences and situations that we have endured. Life is much like a sea… at one time; we may drift peacefully and quietly atop the glistening waters. Then, there will be situations in which we must work to keep ourselves afloat waters that are ferocious and ominous in nature.

Yes, it is true, there will be treacherous waters and frightening and intimidating clouds that linger among us throughout life, but it is essential that we each realize the importance of being true to ourselves. Is it not true that in the roughest of seas men learn to survive? Is it not among the violent waves that men learn to welcome and appreciate the calm surfaces of the water? Is it not true that when men face the evil of the storm that they relish in the calm that occurs after the thunders and treacherous waves have passed? If you are searching for the importance of being true to yourself, consider the man that was consumed by something much larger than he.

In order to be true to yourself in the midst of peace and calmness, you must stand firm in your beliefs when staring opposition in the face. This is what assists in developing who you are, this is what defines you… your ability to overcome and learn.

Many times in life, we will be faced with temptations that may defy who we are as individuals. It is so much easier to go with the natural flow of the tide than to push against it. It is human nature to want to experience as little complications as possible. What you must consider is if you are denying yourself of some important lesson, of something much bigger than you or you ever imagined. If floating with the direction of the tide defies you as an individual, and you feel as if you will not gain any type of insight as to who you are, or it does not allow you to stand alongside of your personal beliefs and convictions, turn that boat around and push with all of your might against the tide.

It is better for a man to be true to who he is, rather than deny himself of all the rewards he will experience as standing alone in his personal convictions and beliefs.

Being true to yourself is a very rewarding experience. Many experiences and situations will come your way and threaten the very existence of your unique stand in life. We pass over many different waves in life, many ships come in, and many ships pass us by. In many cases, animals of the wild such as sharks will want to engulf us in order to define their existence. Stormy skies will sometimes linger over us, and violent wars sometimes rest on the banks of life. In all of these things, you must stand strong in who you are. Allowing these situations to overcome you, violate you, and even control you in any way, just may be the point in which you lose sight of the horizon, sight of who you truly are.

  • Keeping a Journal

At first, keeping a journal doesn’t sound very cool. It conjures up clichéd images of TV journalists or of diaries with scented pages. However, there are actually lots of benefits to keeping a journal, especially during the exciting time after high school when the world is open to be explored.

Life can get stressful, especially as you take on more responsibilities and challenges as you get older. Sometimes going to school, maintaining a social life or working can clutter up the mind with worries. Keeping a journal is like a kind of private therapy; you can write down your fears, hopes, dreams, frustrations and the troubles of daily life without any fear of judgment. Many people find that writing their thoughts down in a journal helps to clear the mind, reduces overall stress and helps to maintain an ordered lifestyle.

If you choose to go to college or university, keeping a journal can be really helpful for keeping track of assignments, classes and presentations. In addition to that, this can be the most exciting part of your life and keeping a journal is a great way to preserve your experiences as a young adult for years to come. Furthermore, keeping a regular, up-to-date journal can help keep one’s writing and English skills fresh and ready; a distinct advantage if you find yourself needing to write an essay.

Keeping a journal can be great for creative reasons, too. If you’re a poet, writer or like to draw, a journal can be an excellent place to exercise your creative muscles and write stories, draw pictures or write poems in addition to writing down important daily events.

Writing before bed can be very relaxing, and the importance of a good sleep schedule can’t be stressed enough – especially when entering the workforce or university and college. Doing a bit of writing before bed can help to establish a good routine, a solid sleep schedule and can help cause drowsiness for a good night’s sleep. Writing isn’t just for bedtime though; keeping a journal can be therapeutic at any time of day. It can really help you to sort out your feelings, whether they are anger, sadness, love, happiness or frustration. Seeing your thoughts put down on paper (or on a computer, it’s up to you) can help to put things in a different perspective or show things from a different angle which can really help with problem solving.

Whatever your age, occupation, or education, writing a journal is an awesome way to keep your thoughts in order, deal with personal problems, relax and chronicle the highs and lows of your life.

  • Conquering Your Fears About Success

    Conquering Your Fears About Success

Life is scary. There is no way around it. Life challenges you to bring what you have to the table. Life challenges you to use all of your resources and to make the best of it! You can face it or avoid it, but life is something you can fight or bow away from. Life offers opportunity and you can take it and run with it or you can turn away from it and let it squash you.

Time is an essential component of life and it is what determines whether you are ready or not for the challenges that face you. Sometimes you are too young for the challenges you face and that is why you fail. Other times you are old enough for the challenges that face you and you succeed.

There are various components to any challenge, and your level of expertise in each of the dimensions will help to determine your success or your failure at the task at hand. There is a social dimension, where mastery comes from being adept at fitting in or leading your social environment. There is an emotional component where your mastery would be in the form of being able to manage and use your emotions in constructive ways to help you to adapt and succeed in your environment. There is also a technical aspect to be mastered, that is the skills required to accomplish the task at hand. Whether they are scientific, logic, mathematical, artistic or creative, the skills required to accomplish a task are essential to have in order to achieve success at the goal you are pursuing.

Life is a series of goals that you are looking to achieve. If you are to be successful, you must either be a master of one dimension or a jack of all trades. Some people are really good at one particular thing, while other people are good at a variety of things that, through balancing each of the dimensions, they see success. A person with a PhD, for example, may be exceptional at science, logic, English or something else, but they may be less adept at other areas of their life. They may, however, be exceptional at one area and equally or at least competent enough in other areas of their life. Some people are only modestly good at a variety of areas of their life.

What you can bring to the table is essentially all you have and a lot of what you have is genetic and based on what you’ve learned in your upbringing. How you use what you have determines your success. If you are particularly adept at certain things, you can decide how you want to express yourself within those dimensions. Perhaps you want to challenge yourself and pursue something challenging that you aren’t particularly adept at but would like to practice. Perhaps you would  like to capitalize on something that you are extremely good at and know very well, so you can experience self-actualization and feel in sync with the universe and your life’s purpose.

Conquering fears involves facing what you have to offer and making a decision as to how you want to apply it to the world. When we fight, we are facing our fears or our enemies, and we are putting them in their place. On your path toward your destiny, you are going to need to be able to be aware that some people are wrong, that some people will not be your supporters, that some people will be against you, will ridicule you, will limit you to only what they know. You can remember that you are only as good as the person you are speaking with. I could be speaking with someone who has had a totally different life experience and so they would not reflect to me what I believe. Everyone has different life experiences and different pressures on them, and we are all just trying to survive and succeed.

  • Dream Job: Clown

    Dream Job: Clown

Every circus needs a clown. Festivals and birthday parties are fun when they include clowns as part of the entertainment. People expect to see clowns in places like these, entertaining both children and adults. However, one of the world’s most famous clowns was known not for working in a circus or a festival, but for being on television.  Charlie Chaplin combined his role as a clown with his acting skills to play an important part in the history of entertainment.

Most people probably know about the kinds of things that typical clowns do. How much do you know about clowns? You might have seen ones with painted faces and big red noses. They juggle balls or make balloon animals. Much of what they do is slapstick comedy, with a lot of physical jokes like falling over chairs, getting pies in the face and other funny actions.

Sometimes clowns develop a character that people especially enjoy. Charlie Chaplin directed and acted in several movies, but he is best known for his famous clown character, the Tramp. Even years after he last played the role, he is still known for the way he portrayed people’s struggles through the Tramp. Charlie Chaplin began his career very early in his life. He was born in 1889 to parents who were both entertainers. He first started acting at the age of twelve when he got a part in a Sherlock Holmes play. He worked for some time in a circus and then began his career in comedy. Most of his long career in film was in the United States.

Like many clowns, Charlie Chaplin developed his own style and special character. Many clowns are mimes who rarely or never speak during their acts. Charlie began his career during the era of silent films, before the technology could combine sounds and pictures. He was able to show all kinds of emotions and to tell stories without ever speaking, just by his actions and the expressions on his face. He wore a costume of a badly-fitting suit and a hat and carried a cane. He would do some of the usual clown tricks such as pulling flowers out of nowhere, but he also told stories through his films. His work was so good that he became famous around the world.

You might never become as famous as Charlie Chaplin, but you can still be successful as a clown. If you know how to make people laugh, being a clown can be a fun and satisfying job for you!

  • Why Music Education Matters

    Why Music Education Matters

Little in this world can affect people more than music—whether it’s a catchy song on the radio or front-row tickets to the philharmonic, people invest themselves in the musical world, and for good reason. Music is more than just entertainment; it can teach us valuable lessons on how to think, how to act, and how to feel. It brings people together so that they can listen and learn in harmony. It is this music we should be teaching to incoming generations, for this will shape their choices (and their lives) for the better.

Learning to play, practice or perform music is more difficult than it seems. Mastering an instrument, whatever it may be (the clarinet, the piano, the voice), takes much dedication. There is great value in such a skill: by playing music, whether for an audience of thousands or in the privacy of your own room, you are bringing a composer’s message to life. Music is one of the most beautiful means of self-expression, and you can contribute to that simply by playing the notes on the page. The theory behind music is also beneficial, whether you’re studying the lives of famous composers or learning to write music of your own. It is essential to get a comprehensive understanding of music, not only for what it is, but for what it was intended to do.

But this education extends far beyond musical aptitude. Aside from the obvious practical benefit of learning to play an instrument, music helps fine-tune a variety of skills. When playing in an ensemble like an orchestra, musicians are taught the importance of listening to one another, of cooperating as a team to make a beautiful, unified sound. When sight-reading a new piece, a player learns how to focus, to push through even when the subject matter is difficult beyond belief. When playing scales for hours on end, a musician becomes disciplined, determined to do whatever it takes to succeed, no matter how tedious the task.

Musicians develop an incredible sense of precision, making sure to catch every note and rhythm and cadence, and the melody that follows demonstrates the truly incredible merit behind their hard work. Oftentimes, this merit cannot be measured: it can only be felt. The thing about music is that it expresses what cannot be put into words, and brings about feelings you didn’t even know you were capable of. It is easy to be moved by music, for it is the product of the performer’s heart and soul (oftentimes, they are telling the composer’s story through their own lens). Continuously, people are inspired by music; they are motivated to keep the tradition alive.

Music education matters because it helps people find their passions and share them with those who will listen. By keeping music alive, we are promoting teamwork, perseverance, and hard work. And by keeping music alive, we are helping people find themselves along the way.

  • Fashion at Second-Hand Shops

    Fashion at Second-Hand Shops

When people meet each other on the street or at school, they notice different things about each other. They might notice the other person’s hair or their face, but they often notice the clothes. What people wear can say a lot about who they are, what they value and even how creative they are. Clothes can be expensive, but you can still look good without spending a lot of money. Finding fashion at second-hand shops can be challenging, but it’s possible to look good on a very small budget.

Most cities have different types of second-hand clothing stores. Consignment shops are places where the previous owners of the clothes or other items get money back for whatever the store staff can sell. If no one buys an item, it eventually goes back to the owner. Much of the time, however, people donate used clothing or other items to organizations that use the money to help some kind of program, such as income support for the poor. Thrift stores that cater to the poor are some of the most common of these types of shops.

Shopping for second-hand clothes can be rewarding but time-consuming. It can be hard to find nice outfits in the jumble of used clothes, with limited choices of size or colour. However, patience, persistence, and a sense of fashion can help. For people who know how to sew, shopping at second-hand stores can present many options for altering clothing to fit new styles. The final result can often be worth the extra time spent in shopping.

If shopping at second-hand stores is so time-consuming, why does anyone do it? Money is probably the biggest reason. New clothes can be very expensive, especially for anyone on a low income. Buying used clothes allows them to have a variety of outfits without spending more than they can afford. For some people, shopping for used clothes might also be an exciting challenge that allows them to create their own style. If they choose clothes that fit well with different outfits, they can have a lot of variety without having a closet full of clothes.

For many second-hand shoppers, buying used clothes is a social or environmental choice. Most of the clothes people buy in North America are made far away in countries like Bangladesh or China, where many workers experience low pay and unsafe conditions. Buying these clothes makes customers feel that they support the exploitation of workers. Another reason for buying second-hand clothing is that transporting the finished clothes from the factories to the North American stores uses a lot of fuel and pollutes the environment. Meanwhile, unwanted clothes often end up in the landfills here in Canada, contributing to the mountains of garbage people produce. Buying second-hand clothes means that people are trying to get the greatest possible use out of the world’s resources.

For all of these reasons and more, second-hand clothing shopping is growing in North America at shops, flea markets, garage sales. Will you join the trend?

  • Dream Jobs: Ballerina

    Dream Jobs: Ballerina

Brooke Nagy is an 18 year old on a fast-track to becoming Canada’s next prima ballerina. Becoming a professional ballet dancer was not a decision Brooke made on a whim. It has taken a lifetime of preparation and focus. Since age three she has been classically trained in Ceccetti ballet, and has developed an advanced knowledge of both classical ballet and modern dance.

Brooke has had the opportunity to dance professionally at many points throughout her career, but decided that it was important for her to complete her high school education before devoting herself entirely to the art. “I’ve already trained with the CanadianNational Ballet School and the Quinte Ballet School,” Brooke explains.

“For two summers I was accepted to study as a part of the Canadian National Ballet School’s ballet-intensive summer school program, which led to the opportunity to be a part of their full-time program. I’ve also been accepted to (and attended) the Quinte Ballet School’s Summer School Program, which led to an acceptance into their full-time program” she continued.

Ballet may well be in her blood, as her mother is a classical ballet teacher and former professional ballerina for the Miami Cityballet. Brooke intends to one day take over her mother’s dance studio, after travelling and performing as much as possible. She applied to the National Ballet of Canada’s Teacher Training program, New York’s Adelphi College and Suny Purchase College’s Conservatories of Dance and George Brown College’s prestigious dance program, garnering preliminary acceptance to all, but choosing to accept George Brown’s offer.

The Toronto-based program will prepare her for an intensive Bachelor of Fine Arts transfer after earning her two year diploma, and set her up for work with Canada’s Ballet Jörgen, a renowned Canadian classical ballet company that selects dancers from George Brown program alumnus.

Among the highlights of Brooke’s auditioning process was when famed Canadian dancer Frank Augustyn called her out from a class of second and third year Adelphi ballet students she was placed with, praising her grace and skill above those of professional dancers with many more years of training. She was then offered a ten thousand dollar dance scholarship for Adelphi, a tempting offer that she may return to later in her career.

For Brooke, the choice of dance over other more job-stable programs was quite simple. “I want to be a dancer over everything else. I know that the field of dance is where I excel and where I belong.” Whether it be the National Ballet School or Frank Augustyn himself, the ballet world agrees.
